Photograph, Classic Photos, Form 3A, Eltham High School, 1960
Dr Gary Presland advised the following in October 2020: "In 1959 my parents bought a house in Church Street, Panton Hill. For about three and a half years previously, they had farmed a property 15 km south of Echuca, before moving, briefly to Melbourne. After moving to Panton Hill, I was enrolled at Eltham HS, in Form 2 (Year 8). I completed that year, and in 1960 was in Form 3A (at which time the photograph was taken). To reach the school, I caught a bus each day, from Panton Hill. Early in 1960, my parents decided to separate. My mother left with the youngest two of my three siblings, leaving me and a younger brother with our father in Panton Hill. My brother was in Year 7 at the High School. After a few months, my father and I had a falling out and my brother and I left home to join our mother in South Melbourne. For the remainder of the 1960 school year we travelled each day by train from Melbourne to Eltham. In 1961 I was enrolled at Melbourne Boys High School, which was the nearest secondary school to where I was then living."Written in pencil on back: "Gary Presland - 4th from left, back row Eltham HS, 1960" Also stamped in purple ink on back "Classic Photos"1960, class photo, eltham high school, gary presland -

The family-owned timber manufacturing business Pelco was started by Cecil Victor Woodfield in 1937. The joinery company Pelco began by making wooden ladders and was registered as the Palmerston Extension Ladder Company. C V Woodfield, who lived from 1884 -1959, arrived in Palmerston North from Canterbury NZ in the aftermath of the Great Depression to work in construction. The company got its first step up when Woodfield was asked by a commercial painter to make a ladder, and the founder set up shop in a garage on Ruahine St. According to the company website, Pelco made its name in New Zealand with its Oregon Extension Ladders, and up until its closure, manufactured non-conductive Lamilite Ladders for the electrical supply and service industry worldwide. The company was incorporated as a joinery business in 1946 and continued making high-end cabinetry for seven decades. Under director Geoff Woodfield, in the 1950s, the company embarked on the production of Fleetcraft plywood boats. Another water-related enterprise followed, with the manufacture of oars and paddles. Its branded Gull Superior Oars and Paddles business began exporting in 1972 to Australia and subsequently to the United States, UK and Japan. Diazotypes, Sketch Plan: Garden Layout - 13 Edward St. Kew
John and Phyllis Murphy designed this house and garden in Kew for Sir Frank and Lady Macfarlane Burnet in 1959, the year before Burnet and Peter Medaware received the Nobel Prize for discovering acquired immunological tolerance. For the most highly honoured scientist to have worked in Australia, Burnet's house is modest - single storey with two bedrooms. Typical of post-war suburban housing thought, the garden is a generous, and the planting a mix of existing shrubs and trees, old favourites such as camelias, hydrangeas, lilacs, and a unusually 'a thick copse of native trees'. John Murphy (1920-2004) and Phyllis Murphy (nee Slater) (1924-) are alumni of RMIT. John commenced his architectural studies at Swinburne Technical College prior to WW2, and subsequently studied at Melbourne Technical College (now RMIT University) from 1944 to 1946. Phyllis studied architecture at Melbourne Technical College from 1942, before transferring to Melbourne University's Architectural Atelier in 1944 They both completed their Bachelor of Architecture in 1949, with Phyllis topping the fourth year, and John coming in second. They established their architectural practice in 1950. One early project was their design with Kevin Borland and Peter McIntyre for the Olympic Swimming Pool (1956). Photograph, Skaters in 'The Seasons', 1969
A photo from 1969 of three girls dressed in Christmas costumes. It was taken to showcase the annual demonstration. A newspaper article from 16 October 1969 shows the girls were to perform as skaters in the production of "The Seasons" in the annual demonstration. Their names are Cathy Richardson, 9 of Avondale Heights, Karen Mills, 11 of West Footscray, and Thelma Richardson, 10 from Avondale Heights. A photo of girls in similar costumes posing with a snowman appears in a newspaper clipping at 01824 from 1959 which shows that Legacy reused the elaborate costumes that were produced for the demonstrations. This photo provides an example of the beautiful costumes worn by Junior Legacy girls for Legacy's Annual Demonstrations at the Melbourne Town Hall. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and eurythmics, the Demonstration was an annual event to showcase their skills. Melbourne Legacy conducted Annual Demonstrations / Parades from 1928 through to the late 1970's, usually held at Melbourne Town Hall or Olympic Pool Stadium. The beautiful costumes were made by members of the Junior Legacy Mothers' Club and the Melbourne Legacy Wives' Association. Whilst the cost to Legacy was very small, the quality of the work produced was truly professional. This photograph is of historical and social significance as it serves as photographic evidence of the work that the Legacy Wives' Association and Junior Legacy Mothers' Club produced over the years.Black and white photo of three girls posing together in Christmas costumes.Stamped on the back of the photo: "COPYRIGHT / THE HERALD & WEEKLY TIMES LTD. / MELBOURNE AUSTRALIA / NOT TO BE REPRODUCED / OR DISPLAYED WITHOUT WRITTEN PERMISSION", "17 October 1969"junior legatee, annual demonstration, costumes -

Functional object - Sand Scoop, North East Region Water Authority, Wodonga
The large aluminium sand scoop was used by Wodonga Waterworks Trust and it is part of the North East Region Water Authority collection in the Wodonga Historical Society. Wodonga's drinking water and wastewater were originally managed by the Wodonga Waterworks Trust, which was established in 1897, after Wodonga became a separate shire in 1876. In 1923 a Wodonga Waterworks Trust referendum to provide funding for new infrastructure to supply more water of better quality to Wodonga was passed. This included building the Wodonga Water Tower and it was completed in 1924. It supplied water to Wodonga until 1959, when it was drained and decommissioned after the No 1 Basin on Huon Hill was completed in 1958. In 1983 the Wodonga Waterworks Trust and the Wodonga Sewerage Authority became part of the Wodonga Council, and by 1989 a filtration plant at Huon Hill was completed, which provided filtered water of improved quality to Wodonga, in accordance with the World Health Organisation’s guidelines. In 1994 the Kiewa Murray Region Water Authority took over the Wodonga Council’s water and wastewater operations, and then in 1999 the Kiewa Murray Region Water Authority combined with the Ovens Region Water Authority and became the North East Region Water Authority or NERWA. NERWA then became known as North East Water. The sand scoop has local significance as part of the North East Region Water Authority collection donated to the Wodonga Historical Society. Photograph - Team Photograph, Jacana Primary School: Soccer Team 1983
Jacana Primary School was established in 1959 during a period of rapid suburban development in Melbourne’s northern suburbs. The post-war era saw significant investment in public infrastructure, including schools, to support growing communities shaped by migration and housing expansion. Jacana, located near Broadmeadows, became home to many working-class families, including newly arrived migrants, contributing to a rich and diverse social fabric. By the early 1980s, schools like Jacana Primary were not only centres of education but also vital community hubs. Sporting activities, particularly team sports like soccer, played a central role in student life. They promoted physical health, teamwork, and social inclusion, while also reflecting broader cultural influences—especially as soccer gained popularity among migrant communities. The 1983 soccer team photograph captures this dynamic period, showcasing the importance of extracurricular activities in fostering school spirit and community engagement. It also reflects the values of public education at the time: equity, participation, and the celebration of diversity. Such images serve as enduring records of how schools contributed to shaping local identity and cohesion during a transformative era in Melbourne’s suburban history. This 1983 colour photograph of Jacana Primary School’s soccer team captures the energy and camaraderie of a school that served as a cornerstone of its community from 1959 until its closure in the early 2000s. More than a simple team portrait, the image reflects the vibrant sporting culture that was integral to student life and community engagement during the early 1980s. The photograph preserves cherished memories of teamwork, school pride, and youthful enthusiasm, offering insight into the social dynamics and extracurricular values of the time. It stands as a visual testament to the role of sport in fostering inclusion, resilience, and a sense of belonging among students—qualities that defined Jacana Primary’s enduring legacy in Melbourne’s northern suburbs.A colour photograph of a school Soccer team on satin finish photo paper.PH-4465 (white label) Top Left Corner PH-5431(blue label) Top Right Corner Manufactures mark; Fujicolor/ Paperjacana primary school, photograph, school photograph, education, soccer team, 1983 -

Photograph - Group Photograph, Classic Studios Victoria, Jacana Primary School: Grade 6 Graduation, 2004, 2004
Jacana Primary School was established in 1959 during a period of rapid suburban expansion in Melbourne’s northern suburbs. Located in the suburb of Jacana, the school was part of a broader post-war effort to provide accessible public education to families moving into newly developed housing estates. The area quickly became home to a diverse population, including many migrant families, contributing to a rich and evolving community identity. By the early 2000s, Jacana Primary had become a reflection of Melbourne’s multicultural landscape. The school embraced this diversity through inclusive teaching practices, community engagement, and programs that celebrated cultural heritage. Graduation ceremonies, such as the one captured in the 2004 photograph, were important milestones that marked not only academic achievement but also the culmination of shared experiences and personal growth within a supportive school environment. The 2004 Grade 6 Graduation holds particular significance as it occurred during the final years of the school’s operation. Jacana Primary closed in the early 2000s as part of broader changes in educational policy and demographic shifts. This photograph, therefore, serves as both a celebration and a farewell—preserving the memory of a school that played a formative role in the lives of generations of children and families in Melbourne’s northern suburbs. This 2004 photograph of Jacana Primary School’s Grade 6 Graduation offers a vivid and meaningful snapshot of suburban school life in Melbourne during a time of significant social and urban transformation. Taken in the final years of the school’s operation, the image captures a milestone moment for students at an institution that had served as a vital educational and community hub since its establishment in 1959. More than a record of academic achievement, the photograph reflects the school’s enduring commitment to fostering an inclusive, supportive, and culturally diverse learning environment. By the early 2000s, Jacana had become a reflection of Melbourne’s evolving demographic landscape, with families from a wide range of cultural backgrounds contributing to a rich and dynamic school community. As part of Jacana Primary’s visual archive, this image not only preserves the memory of a significant rite of passage but also contributes to a broader understanding of how public education shaped community identity, promoted social cohesion, and left a lasting legacy in the lives of generations of children and families in Melbourne’s northern suburbs.Colour Photograph on satin finish photographic paper, with blue borders top & BottomBack: Top Left Corner: (Blue Label): PH-4472, Bottom Left Corner: (Black Biro): PH-4373: PH 18383 (crossed out) JACANA PRIMARY SCHOOL /GRADE 6 GRADUATION - 2004 jacana primary school, education, photograph, group photograph, maja sormaz, hung phan, lauren syaranaamul., breanna nash, yeliz akyildiz, mohammad matar, jordan megne, ms carol taylor, ms marie killender (aide), mrs luba bojcuk, grade 6 graduation - 2004 -

Ruyton Girls' School
Photograph - Photographic Portrait, Mrs Charlotte Anderson
Mrs Charlotte Anderson was born Charlotte Eliza Alsop in England in 1838 and arrived in Australia in 1848. She married lawyer James Anderson in 1864, and in the year of his death in 1878 she became the founding owner-Principal of Ruyton Girls' School, Kew. Mrs Anderson operated Ruyton initially in her own home of 63 Bulleen Road, Kew (now 63 High Street South). According to Ruyton histories, Mrs Anderson is said to have begun the school with her own two sons, four daughters and some of her Alsop nieces and nephews who resided in Kew. Around the time of the addition of Maud King, the first student outside the family, the school changed to a 'Ladies College', and the boys were sent elsewhere for their education. By late 1881 Mrs Anderson began using the name 'Ruyton' for the school, in honour of a connection to Ruyton-XI-Towns, Shropshire, England where her great-grandfather had been vicar and where she was baptised. In 1882 Mrs Anderson moved the School to Edgecomb in Studley Park Road from 1882-1888. The larger premises enabled her to begin accepting boarding students from 1882. She retired due to ill health and sold the school to her friend Miss Eliza Bromby. Mrs Anderson lived at 'Bongamero', in the King Valley, Victoria until her death in 1906. She is buried in Boroondara Cemetery. One of Ruyton's four Houses, Anderson, is named for Charlotte Anderson. Artwork AC/0099 is a framed reproduction photograph of an original portrait of Mrs Anderson, c.1900-1906. The location and date of the original photograph is unknown, but may be held among Ruyton papers at the State Library of Victoria (MS 12079). The reproduction was probably created to be part of the gallery of Principals and significant people for the Conference/Boardroom, Henty House.A framed, black & white reproduction of a photographic portrait. The portrait shows the head and shoulders of a middle aged woman wearing Victorian-era clothing including a dark ribbon tied around her collar. She wears a lace cap on her head, and the cap's tail is draped around her shoulders. The woman's body is partially turned away from the camera, while her face is turned toward the camera. John Thomas was born at Worcester, England in 1796 and he became a blacksmith at Hagley, Worcestershire before becoming a Methodist and he soon started to preach. He married Sarah Hartshorn who predeceased him in 1867. He was accepted by the Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society (WMMS) in 1824 and he became a pioneering missionary to Tonga (the Friendly Isles) in the South Pacific. He sailed first to Australia, and eventually arrived in Tonga in 1826, together with his wife and fellow missionary John Hutchinson.Initially he preached in Hihifo, Tongatapu from 1826 to 1828 and then moved to the island of Ha’apai in 1829. He baptised the chief Taufa’ahua Tupou in 1831 and enthroned him with English rites as the first King of all Tonga in 1845. Although the WMMS withdrew from Samoa in 1839, Thomas advocated its re-entry and he supported the King’s policy of sending Tongan Wesleyan missionaries to Fiji and Samoa. John Thomas also persuaded the Australasian Wesleyan Conference ( which took over the Pacific region from the British in 1855) to reverse the London Missionary Society’s decision regarding Samoa. John Thomas had 2 periods in Tonga from 1826 to 1850 and 1855 to 1859. Following a visit to England his influence with King Tupou waned in the 1850's and he retired to England and became a supernumerary minister at Stourbridge, Worcestershire, where he died in 1881. His wife Sarah had been a partner in his missionary work until she died 14 years earlier than he did. John Thomas’ name is honoured by having one of the 12 dormitory houses of Toupou College in the capitol of Tonga named after him. John Thomas House is House #1, and it is customary for the Head Prefect to reside in this dormitory. B & W engraving from a photograph of the Rev. Negative - Haeusler Glass Negatives Collection - T. H. Maher general storekeeper at Ebden, Victoria
The Wodonga Historical Society Haeusler Collection provides invaluable insight into life in late nineteenth and early twentieth century north east Victoria. The collection comprises manuscripts, personal artefacts used by the Haeusler family on their farm in Wodonga, and a set of glass negatives which offer a unique visual snapshot of the domestic and social lives of the Haeusler family and local Wodonga community. This digital image was produced from one of the glass negatives that form part of the collection, probably taken by Louis Haeusler (b.1887) with the photographic equipment in the Wodonga Historical Society Haeusler Collection. Thomas Hugh Maher, born 1881, was the youngest of 11 children of Owen Maher and Sarah nee Finn. After migrating from Ireland and marrying in Sydney in 1853, Owen and Sarah eventually made their home at “Fairview”, Bonegilla, Victoria in 1870. Owen later became a member of the first shire council formed in Wodonga. Thomas attended school at Bonegilla, then as a boarder at St. Joseph’s College in Sydney for his final two years. He returned to work on the farm until his father settled him on a small farm at Ebden. He married Jane Rowley from Bethanga. For some years Thomas and Jane conducted the general store and post office at Ebden which was next to their home ‘Marara”. When Jane died in 1916, Thomas leased “Marara” and moved to Melbourne. After marrying a second time, Thomas returned to Wodonga where he set up a real estate business. In about 1924, Thomas received compensation for his Ebden property when it was resumed for the development of the Hume Weir. He returned to Melbourne where he saw out the rest of his days until his death in 1952 aged 71 years old. This item is unique and has well documented provenance and a known owner. It forms part of a significant and representative historical collection which reflects the local history of Wodonga. It contributes to our understanding of domestic and family life in early twentieth century Wodonga, as well as providing interpretative capacity for themes including local history and social history.Digital image created from the Haeusler Glass negative collection. Warrnambool and District Historical Society Inc.
Typewriter accessories, Early 20th century
This box contains typewriter equipment for a Remington typewriter. The Remington company was founded in U.S.A. and it produced the first typewriter for commercial use in 1873. In 1886 the Remington family business was sold but the name was retained and typewriters with the Remington Rand brand name were sold from 1927 on. Typewriters have now been replaced by computers. This box of equipment belonged to Dr Horace Holmes who would have used a typewriter in his medical practice in Warrnambool in the first half of the 20th century and perhaps would also have used a typewriter in the activities of the many community groups with which he was associated. Horace Iles Holmes (1877-1959) was born and educated in Tasmania and completed a medical degree at the University of Melbourne. He commenced a practice at Warrnambool in 1906 and was the honorary Medical Officer at the Warrnambool Hospital and Warrnambool’s Health Officer. His practice was at ‘Ierne’, at the corner of Spence and Kepler Streets. He was an early member of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons and was prominent in community affairs (foundation President of the Warrnambool Rotary Club, a member of the Warrnambool Masonic Lodge for over 50 years, a Warrnambool Hospital Committee member, a long-term Trustee of the Warrnambool Methodist Church and President of the Lyndoch Hostel for the Aged Committee. Dr Holmes also had agricultural interests and enjoyed fishing, bowls and golf. This box of typewriter equipment is of interest as an item in the collection of Horace Iles Holmes, a doctor who was prominently associated with the professional and community life of Warrnambool for over 50 years. This is a rectangular-shaped black cardboard box with the name ‘Remington’ on it. It is heavily stained inside. The box contains nine objects, most identified as relevant to typewriter maintenance and cleaning:- a paint brush with a wooden handle and bristles – perhaps used for dusting the typewriter keys, two glass bottles which once contained typewriter oil but which are now empty, a red and black typewriter ribbon in a metal container, another metal container with a plunge mechanism for ejecting oil, a metal stick with a sharp end, possibly for cleaning the typewriter keys and three other unidentified small metal objects.Remingtonremington, typewriters, office equipment, dr horace holmes, warrnambool, warrnambool history, typewriter accessories
