Arthur Tandy, Glyn Evans and Leslie Coulter were all members of the Australian Mining Corp during World War One. They were all killed in France. Maroon had covered stub book with charcoal tape on the spine. The book held 100 certificates for those who passed all prescribed examinations and conditions related to the Certificate of Mine Manager at the Ballarat School of Mines. Number 25 to 59 have been filled out. The large mullock heap, marks the site of a former quartz mine, and is one of the few visible signs of the former presence of extensive gold mining activities in this area of Ballarat. Originally known as Park Mine, and now known as Mount Holled Smith, the mine associated with this mullock heap puddled 750 tons of washdirt each day. The mine closed down in 1874, at which time 94,699 ounces of gold had been removed from the ground. An image from the Herbert Richmond collection, gifted in 1982 to the Ballarat Library. The collection contains approximately 200 photographs of Ballarat and district in the 1940s, 50s and 60s, as well as photo albums, glass negatives and other memorabilia. Herb Richmond was a keen photographer, a foundation member and a life member of the Ballarat Camera Club, and a photographer with the Ballarat Courier during the 1940s. The Ballarat Camera Club named an annual award after him. Mr Richmond died in 1981 aged 79. These images were digitally re-photographed by members of the Ballarat Camera Club in September 2006. This image was on a CD-ROM which was placed in a time capsule in December 1997, just before the Ballarat School of Mines merged with the University of Ballarat (now Federation University Australia). The time capsule should have been opened in 2020, the 150th anniversary of the establishment of the Ballarat School of Mines, but was postponed due to successive lockdowns during the Covid19 pandemic.
