Set of five paper cuts made at the Jinshan Peasant Academy in China. Three different designs. Cut from red paper the cuts feature designs of flowers and birds. Contained in a cardboard folder with Chinese writing and the date in black ink on the inside of back page. Hand written on front of folder is "MR WU - DIRECTOR JINSHAN PEASANT ACADEMY"

An item forming part of a collection of costumes, photographs and documents relating to the Weir family who lived in a mansion, originally named Illapa, at 84 Princess Street, Kew, from c.1917 to 1950. This historically significant collection includes items relating to both George Weir (1866-1937), his wife Edith Mary Weir (1867-1948) and their children. George Weir attained national prominence in the mining industry, becoming General Manager of the North Broken Hill Silver Mining Company in 1903 (later renamed North Broken Hill Mining Company 1905-12, and North Broken Hill Ltd 1912-1988), and subsequently President of the Mine Owners Association. He was to remain General Manager of North Broken Hill Ltd until his retirement in 1926.This garment is part of a collection of women’s clothing, owned and worn by Edith Mary Weir (nee Betteridge) - born in Clare, South Australia 1867, died Kew 1948 - and also by her daughter. The garments date from the 1880s to the 1930s. The collection includes day dresses, evening dresses, evening coats, capes, and undergarments. As the wife and daughter of a mine manager, the collection includes representative examples of clothing worn by upper middle class Australian women in domestic circumstances, and at social and civic events. A number of the costumes from the 1920s to the 1930s are of a particularly fine quality, being both rare, representative and intact examples of Australian fashion of the period. The garments in the Weir Collection were donated to the Kew Historical Society by a granddaughter of Edith Weir in 2017.Cocktail dress of an overall muted pink colour, with an outer layer of multi-coloured pink silk georgette patterned all over with small flowers. Below the waist the georgette is formed into separate hemmed floating panels. Pink velvet is used on the square neckline and on the cuffs of the sleeves. This photograph is a visual record of Lady Coles who was on the Melbourne District Nursing Service (MDNS) Management Committee when, in the early 1960s, MDNS set up four regional Centres, one of which she allowed to be run from her home in Frankston.Lady Coles had a long standing interest in Melbourne District Nursing Society, and in 1957 following the separation of the Melbourne District Nursing Society and After-Care Hospital, she was elected as a member of the First Committee of Management of the now Melbourne District Nursing Service (MDNS). In the early 1960s MDNS set up four Centres where cases could be reported for District Nursing action. One of these Centres covered four districts and was situated at Lady Coles home in Frankston. She was on the committee when MDNS was granted its Royal patronage and became the Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS) in 1966. Born about 1838, Eliza Brophy married Thomas Kennedy - an early Linton police officer, a Shire of Grenville councillor, and later a landowner/grazier - in 1861. Eliza and Thomas Kennedy lived in Linton from about 1865 to 1885, and then were at Portland from 1885 to 1892, after which Thomas Kennedy retired from police work to pursue farming and other interests. The Kennedys lived at their property "Fingal Park" (at Spring Vale, later called Pittong) until about 1907-08, when they built a house, named 'Kin-Kora", next to the Catholic Church in Cumberland Street, Linton. Eliza and Thomas Kennedy had thirteen children. The first five children are shown in a photograph taken outside the Linton Court House, c.1869-1870. (See Registration no. 2017-93). Eliza Kennedy died in 1915. An obituary for her published in the 'Grenville Standard', 25 September 1915, notes that "through her genial and happy disposition, she endeared herself to the whole community."Enlarged copy of original black and white photograph which has been mounted on white card. Viola Annie McVicars (1911–1990) was born in Korumburra on 29 April 1911. At the age of 21, she married William John Ayling (1909–1995). After their marriage in 1932, they moved to Kew, initially to 81 Tennyson Street, and later to 180 Pakington Street. A professional tailoress, Viola Ayling was also a talented amateur potter, creating her ceramics at her home in Pakington Street, where she had an internal studio and a handmade, wood-fired brick kiln in her backyard. Following her death in 1990, her studio pottery passed to her daughter, and following the daughter’s death, to her granddaughter. This piece of glazed earthenware is part of a collection of 15 functional and decorative ceramic items donated by Viola’s granddaughter to the collection in 2024.A handmade vase, expertly potted and glazed. The style is representative of Australian ceramic design of the period, particularly that employed by Klytie Pate.Wheel-thrown, globular earthenware vase with a fluted neck, The vase has three glazes, its exterior glaze is a mottled greenish black which has dripped onto the foot rim. Internally it is glazed in cream, while the four petalled flowers encased in buds that form the exterior decoration are highlighted in pink, as is the interior of the rim. The vanity set was owned by a local woman who lived in the Harbour Master's house at Warrnambool after it was decommissioned. The set was possibly a wedding gift from her mother-in-law, Caroline Edwards, a local business woman who was an importer of 'china and fancy goods' along with her husband Thomas Myers Edwards. The Edwards owned Staffordshire House, a business in Timor St (and later Liebig St) from 1876. The vanity set is an example of a valued possession of women at the time and could signify social standing. It was also a functional accessory used on a daily basis.The item is significant socially as an example of accessories available to and used by women in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Historically, it is linked to a local import business ‘Staffordshire House’ in Timor and later Liebig St Warrnambool, where it most likely came from. A pewter (or possibly silver-plated) three-piece vanity set that includes a hand mirror, hair brush and comb. All pieces feature a beautiful ornate moulded rose/flower design on the back, handles and edge of the comb. The hair brush no longer has bristles and is purely ornamental.
