Book, The Women's A Century of Service, 1976
This book on the history of the first 100 years of the Royal Women’s Hospital in Melbourne has been published in 1976 and written by C.E. Sayers. He was a professional historian who was commissioned to produce this history. (He was also the historian commissioned by the Warrnambool City Council in 1969 to write a history of Warrnambool , ‘By These We Flourish’). Apart from its detailing of the history of an important institution in Victoria, this book is of particular interest to the Warrnambool and District Historical Society because William Dixon Saltau (1894-1970), born in Warrnambool, was the Medical Superintendent of the Women’s Hospital from 1924 to 1951. Dr Saltau was the son of Marcus Saltau (M.L.A.) and his wife Jean and the grandson of Henry Saltau who came to Australia in 1860 and who founded in the 1870s the Warrnambool firm of Saltau and Son, general carriers, coal, wood and produce merchants and forwarding agents. Dr Saltau’s father Marcus was Mayor of Warrnambool and a generous benefactor of the Warrnambool Hospital (Marcus Saltau House and Jean Buick Saltau Maternity Ward). Dr Saltau was educated at Warrnambool Academy (Richard Lawson, Headmaster), Scotch College, Melbourne and Melbourne University. He specialized in obstetrics and gynaecology and practised in England, Adelaide and Melbourne. This book is of interest because it describes the history of the Royal Women’s Hospital in Melbourne and because a Warrnambool identity, Dr William Dixon Saltau, was the Medical Superintendent of this hospital for 25 years. His name is listed in this book. This is a soft-cover book of 170 pages printed in 1976 and giving the history of the first 100 years of the Royal Women’s Hospital, Melbourne. It has a white cover of thick paper with the emblem of the hospital on the front in blue, red, black and white. There is also a dust cover with the same material on it. The book has 26 Chapters and ten Appendices, an Index, a Foreword and an Introduction. It has a black and white sketch of the entrance to the first hospital and portraits of the two medical founders of the hospital. The pages have been bound using glue.Front Cover: ‘The Women’s – A Century of Service’ Spine: ‘The Women’s by C. E. This is a packet of 24 detachable post cards –black and white photographs of Alexandria, Egypt, produced during World War One. The post cards are intact and have tissue paper protecting each card. Functional object - Wrapping Paper (2 sheets), Fletcher Jones and Staff, Warrnambool, c. 1970
These sheets of wrapping paper come from the clothing company of Fletcher Jones (Warrnambool). One sheet has been produced for the After Sales Department. David Fletcher Jones (1895-1977) served in World War One and in the 1920s set up as a travelling hawker selling drapery in Western Victoria. In 1924 he leased three shops in Liebig Street, Warrnambool and in 1928 he moved to the Koroit/Liebig Streets intersection with his Man's Shop. He manufactured men's clothing on site. In 1931 he moved into a new set of two-storeyed buildings on the site. In 1946 he opened a men's store in Melbourne and in 1948 he opened a factory in Warrnambool with a new company called Fletcher Jones and Staff (1951). This company extended to other parts of Australia and became well-known throughout Australia for the production of men's trousers and later men's and women's clothing. By 2011 the Warrnambool factory was sold and the company dissolved. These wrapping papers are of interest as a memento of the Fletcher Jones Clothing Company, a major industry in Warrnambool and Australia for many years. These are two sheets of wrapping paper from the Fletcher Jones clothing company. .1 A sheet of grey paper over-printed with a blue logo (shield and needle and thread) and blue printing .2 A sheet of buff-coloured paper (tissue quality) over-printed with a blue logo (shield and needle and thread) and red printing.1 Fletcher Jones Says Compare .2 Fletcher Jones, After Sales Service, F.J. Functional object - Spirit Level
This item was given to the Historical Society in 1972, with the donor indicating that the spirit level belonged to the Henty family. The Hentys of Portland are regarded as the first permanent settlers in the State of Victoria (1834). Stephen Henty, with his brother Edward, was involved in the whaling industry in Portland. He also had shipping interests, operating a regular Western District shipping service (‘Champion’, ‘Lady Bird’, ‘Western’, ‘Edina’ etc) and a property ‘Cadnook’, near Harrow. Stephen Henty had close connections with Warrnambool not only because of his shipping interests but also because he was the brother-in-law of an early Warrnambool Harbour Master, Captain Frank Helpman. A spirit level was an essential tool for early settlers as they often built their own homes and constructed the roads nearby, needing to ascertain if what was being constructed was on level ground. It does not seem possible to establish whether this item belonged to the Henty family or to a Henty property. But in the Historical Society collection we have a piece of sheet music which includes the handwriting ‘Mrs Smalpaige, Cadnook’, ‘S. J. Henty’ and the date ‘8th August 1859’. Also the Warrnambool Art Gallery has an authentic Henty piano dating from 1837 and Stephen Henty’s wife died in Hamilton in 1906 so it is possible that the spirit level came to us from a Henty family descendant living nearby via Mr N. Kelly. If the Henty provenance can be proved then this item is of high significance. This is an unvarnished wooden spirit level, apparently home made, with a bubble in the centre. The top has been attached with eight screws, now much rusted. There appears to be some letters in the bubble area but they have not been deciphered “Hentys spirit level, oldest in Australia” is written in ink on the back of the objectspirit level, henty brothers portland, warrnambool, henty family -

Programme - Program, Lions Club Program, 1960 (original)
The Lions Club in Warrnambool received its Charter in 1960 and this is the program for that historic event. The Warrnambool Lions Club was sponsored by the Lions Club of Colac on that occasion. The local group still exists today as an important service club in the city and district. The program is of some importance as it marks the establishment of an important service club in the city. However its importance is somewhat diminished by the fact that it is not an original document. This is a booklet of seven pages which have been photocopied. The information has been printed and includes the program for the evening, the current officers, directors and charter members, the menu for the meal, the Lions Club Code of Ethics and Objects and space for autographs. The cover has a colour photograph of Warrnambool Harbour and the Lions Club Logo is printed in yellow. This is an original letter from World War One It was written by a soldier from Nullawarre and has a particular poignancy as he writes: “My work brings me in contact with all that hurts in war. This is an envelope containing a letter of two pages sent by a soldier on active service in France in World War One. Both the envelope and the letter are buff-coloured. The envelope has an image of an Australian Military Forces Y.M.C.A. logo, a Post Office stamp and a Censor stamp. The address is handwritten in pencil. IAN ALFRED (Joe) LYONS MBE Born 16.2.1915 in Bendigo enlisted in the RAAF aged 25 years on 27.5.1940, No 400095. Starting in the ranks as an LAC, he rose to Flt/Sgt pre-embarkation. He embarked for the Middle East on 2.11.1941before dis-embarking to serve with No 3 Sqd RAAF. During heavy action on 8.1.1942, his plane was forced down due to engine damage. It landed in an enemy minefield and when it came to a halt, its wheels were straddling a mine. After being rescued by a British officer, dozens of mines were located and dug up. On return, some 15 miles from base, the vehicle Lyons was travelling in hit a mine (on 9.1.1942), resulting in 5 KIA or WIA. Lyons spent 2 weeks in hospital with severe concussion and deafness. Lyons the embarked for Australia on 11.3.1942 before disembarking on 18.4.1942. He was posted to Townsville with 82nd Sqd on 27.6.1944. Subsequently he was posted to Noemfoor Island on 21.9.1944 as Operational with 82nd Sqd and promoted to Flt/Lt (Temp.) on 3.1.1945. On 6.1.1945 he was posted to 77Sqd as Operational on Morotai. This deployment ended on 9.7.1945. Records show that he flew 26 Strike/Attack missions and 13 others with both squadrons. Post WW2, Lyons remained with the RAAF with a new service number (033072). On 2.2.1948 he was posted to Japan before returning to Australia on 28.8.1948, apparently for medical reasons. He was appointed Flt/Lt on 23.9.1948 before returning to JApan and Korea on 22.8.1950. He was awarded an MBE as Operations Officer with 77Sqd for 'Outstanding enthusiasm and energy at 3 Korean bases'. A US Bronze Star was awarded to Lyons for 'Distinguished and meritorious service as Operations Officer in Korea during the period 14.10.1950 to 17.2.1951'. After Korea, Lyons received a number of posting from Victoria to Western Australia. He was awarded the Air Efficiency Medal in 1964. At his own request, Flt/Lt Ian Alfred 'Joe' Lyons MBE, retired from the RAAF HQ OP COM on 15.12.1967. The photograph is part of the Ian A.
