Textile - Clothing, Top Hat and Box, Early 20th Century
This hat belonged to a Warrnambool undertaking firm, Beattie and Phillips. This firm was established by Christopher Beattie and Henry Phillips in 1865 and was originally situated in Koroit Street. Beattie’s son, James, took over the business in 1916 and moved to new premises at 82 Fairy Street about 1928. In 1945 the business management was transferred to James Leahy and the firm continued until 2000. The top hat was used by both James Beattie and James Leahy and would have been one of several used by the employees in this undertaking business. The suppliers of the hat were Cramond and Dickson (note that the name ‘Cramond’ is misspelt on the hat itself). John Glass Cramond and James Dickson established their clothing and drapery and ironmongery business in Warrnambool in 1855 and it continued to operate in Liebig Street until 1974. This is a highly significant item for three reasons: 1. It belonged to, and was used by, two directors of the undertaking firm of Beattie and Phillips, a most prominent business in Warrnambool for 135 years 2. It was supplied by the firm of Cramond and Dickson, a dominant retail shop in Warrnambool for 119 years 3. It is an important example of a social custom of the past – the wearing of formal wear, including a top hat, by funeral employees (even to the extent of taking the hat by rail for funerals etc outside of Warrnambool) This is a black top hat with paper and silk inserts in the inside crown and a brown leather lining stitched on to the inside of the brim. There is black corded ribbon around the brim and around the outside of the hat. The brim is made of felt with the crown showing a shiny pile. There is a small round metal insert on the top of the crown. A piece of a newspaper dated 1st January 1931 is stitched into the inside of the brimInside the hat on the bottom of the crown – ‘Extra Quality’; ‘Crammond (sic) & Dickson Warrnambool’ with a stamp logo on the silk – a British logo with a lion and a unicorn with the words – ‘Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense’ and ‘Dieu et Mon Droit’ In biro on inside crown are the letters ‘J.L.’ undertaker's hat, beattie and phillips, christopher beattie, henry phillips, warrnambool history -

Tarnagulla History Archive
Cheetham book, 1898
James Cheetham was both secretary of the Shire of Bet Bet and a councillor for the Borough of Tarnagulla. He was the Mayor of Tarnagulla for four years. James also entered the Victorian parliament and was the MLA for the Dunolly Electorate from 1 April 1889 to 1 June 1890. This meant he was holding three positions at the same time. James died in 1890 from injuries received in a buggy accident. Murray Comrie Collection. A notebook associated with the Cheetham family of Tarnagulla. Some parts have been used as a school exercise book (writing practise, latin verbs, grammar rules) others have been used for early drafts of official letters relating to Council business, mostly in 1898. Also contains a child's drawings. Some pages are cut or torn. Author of letter drafts is J.D. Cheetham. The child/school parts are probably all by Annie M. Orbost & District Historical Society
black and white photograph, Ward Bros, late 19th / early 20th century
Around 1885 Mr James Nixon started a sawmill in the paddock below Mr Harry Cameron's dairy. It was in Snaggers Lane on the east side of the present highway. The photo is of James Nixon's sawmill with Percy Nixon in the centre foreground. Orbost has historically been based on the timber industry, but that industry has declined considerably over the last 20 years. The number of locals involved in the timber industry has declined and many of the mills have closed. This item reflects a time when that industry was a significant contributor to the economy of the district.A very yellowed photograph of five men, probably workers, at a mill site. The photograph is on a grey buff card.on front - "Nixon's Sawmill" on back - "Toby Nixon's Sawmill"timber-industry-orbost sawmill-nixon -

Goblet, Silver South Norwood Athletics, 1880
This cup was awarded in 1880 to James Dickson Junior for winning a 400 yards race. The cup was awarded by the South Norwood Athletic Club. There is a Norwood in South Australia and Scotland and a South Norwood in London. James Dickson Junior (1859-1949) was born in Warrnambool to James and Susan Dickson. His father had established a general store in Warrnambool in 1855 in partnership with John Cramond. This store, known as Cramond and Dickson, was a prominent one in Warrnambool until its closure in 1973. James Dickson managed the London branch store of Cramond and Dickson from 1870 to 1880 and James Dickson Junior lived in London during that time and went to school in Scotland. So the cup could have been won in Scotland but it is most likely from a London athletics meeting. James Dickson Junior became a senior partner in the Cramond and Dickson business and was a leading citizen in Warrnambool as a director of the Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory, a committeeman on the Warrnambool Hospital Board for nearly 50 years and a president of the Warrnambool Racing Club. This cup is of considerable significance as it was won by James Dickson Junior in 1880. James Dickson Junior was a prominent businessman and active community worker in Warrnambool for more than 50 years. This is a silver cup or trophy with a maker’s symbol and four other hallmarks. It is in the shape of a goblet and has the race and winner’s information etched on the side of the cup. It has some small dents.‘South Norwood Athletic Sports 12 June 1880 400 Yards Maiden Race won by J. Dickson Jnr.’cramond and dickson store, warrnambool -

Instrument - Flutina, n.d
This instrument belonged to Captain James Fawthrop's stepsonConnection to Captain James Fawthrophe flutina is an early French precursor of the diatonic button accordion. The earliest version of the instrument dates from about 1831. It was constructed by "Pichenot le Jeune" and was probably one of the first accordions capable of playing a melody. It has one or two rows of treble buttons, which can play the tonic of the scale as "drawing" the bellows. Usually there is no bass keyboard. The right hand operates an air valve (silent except for the rush of air). In the front of the keyboard is a rocker switch, which is also called "bascule d'harmonie". This switch is to be activated with the thumb in order to open up a pallet (a pad that covers a tone hole at the other end of the key buttons) for a simple tonic/dominant effect of accompaniment: tonic while drawing and dominant while pressing.captain james fawthrop, musical instrument, accordion, flutina -
