Bendigo's Cenotaph by Dacre Smyth 1988. Bendigo's War Memorial in the city centre is a half size replica of the famous Cenotaph in London. Some 4-1/2 metres high, the Bendigo RSL President described it as the best country Memorial in Australia during its rededication just before ANZAC Day 1988 following its extensive refurbishment. It had first been dedicated in June 1957 and it is normally flood lit at night. It is not known for sure when the painting was donated to the Bendigo RSL but it was hanging in the Foyer years before the Soldiers Memorial Institute became a Museum in 1998. A gold coloured medallion in a black velour box it appears to have been issued by Weapons of War which was a series of 52 DVDs. It was found in the archive cupboards and may have been collected due to the connection with commemorating the military service of ADF personnel. Legacy was founded by returned servicemen of the first world war and Legatees were all ex-service personnel until the 1990s.A record that Legatees collected items that commemorated military service.Round gold tone medallion with colour image of a bugler and red poppies and an embossed Australian Army rising sun. Bought with funds generated by cemetery tours , presented to SHNCHC by SHHS following a presentation to the Society by the author. Graeme Davison has lived in Surrey Hills for many years. A family history by historian Graeme Davison - A widow and her 8 older children are uprooted from their Hampshire farm in 1850 and thrown together on an emigrate ship with 38 distressed needlewomen from London. How they came to be on the boat, and what happened on the high seas and afterwards in Australia , is a vivid tale of family ambitions and fears, successes and catastrophes. The Hewetts were not famous or distinguished, but their story reveals much about the foundations of Australia. According to the Australian War Memorial website, the photographer was David Tennant Gaery Eastman and the photo was taken on 9 March 1945. In the AWM collection there is also a photo of members of the platoon at the unit slaughter yards in Milne Bay, New Guinea (REF: AWM 0703790). He had multiple copies of this photo, which may have been obtained with the aim of distributing them to other platoon members. Leslie George Lobb - born 15 July 1920 in Box Hill; married Elizabeth Annie Stephenson in 1954; died 14 Nov. 1997. Leslie became a service station / garage proprietor at 352 Mont Albert Road, Mont Albert a business he took over from his father. An associated mechanical business operated under the name of Leo Green Motors, at the same address. The family lived next door at 354 Mont Albert Road, Mont Albert. Leslie's father Harry Lobb had operated at an adjoining property (350 Mont Albert Road, Mont Albert) as a fuel and ice merchant, before installing a petrol bowser to service the expanding motor car industry. The house at 354 Mont Albert Road, Mont Albert was removed and relocated by the family in 2000 to Mirboo North, Gippsland, Victoria, where it still stands.The photo is a touchstone to local servicemen who served in World War 2.A B&W / sepia photo with a narrow white border of 25 men in uniform. Unearthing local heritage has won two Year 8 Korowa Anglican Girls School students the state finals in the 'Victorian Heritage' section of the National History Awards. Serrin Smyth and Georgina Blood submitted a video which was one of over 2000 entries from across Victoria. Their chosen subject was in the history challenge topic 'Civic Rights and Responsibilities in our History' was Blood's Cottage in Station Street, Box Hill. The cottage is now 144 years old and is the oldest surviving cottage in Box Hill. Keeping the cottage has, and will definitely have, an impact on society. Equipment - Sighting Telescope (component part)
Appears to be part of sighting telescope for artillery. Further ID information has been sought from various sources, in including the Royal Australian Artillery History Company. The RAAHC have been most cooperative and interested in attempting to identify the equipment of which this item is a part, but with no firm details on its use or history at the time of cataloguing. Detailed communication between RAAHC and MERSL are available from the latter.Off-centre ring part way along barrel has engravings for elevation (?), ranging from 57 to 69 (see 4th picture above). Actual numbers engraved are 57 63 69, with small engravings to mark each degree between these intervals. -

In 1867, Frenchman Joseph Monier patented the use of metal reinforced concrete for use in horticultural troughs. Francois Hennebique expanded this idea into a general construction technique including for the construction of bridges bridges with the first bridge built in 1875. In Victoria, Monash and Anderson, representatives of the Australian patent holders and later Victorian patent holders. The Bendigo Monier Bridges were built between 1901 and 1902.
