This photograph commemorates a visit by American Fashion Models to Prestige Textile Studio in July 1950. Melbourne’s Myer Emporium in conjunction with Neiman Marcus, Dallas, Texas presented the first American Fashion Parades in Australia in July 1950. Ruth Hancock, the leading model and buyer for Neiman Marcus, directed the Parades, and the eighteen year old modelling prodigy, Carmen dell’ Orefice, described by Cecil Beaton as ‘the world’s most beautiful woman’ was one of the stars of the runway. In a bid to encourage a market for Australian textiles in the United States, the models visited textile manufacturers and design studios in Melbourne, such as Yarra Falls Mills and Prestige Studios, one of Melbourne’s premier textile design studio. Murray WALKER (1937- ) Born Ballarat, Victoria Described as one of Melbourne's Figurative Expressionists Murray Walker educated at the Ballarat Technical Art School (a division of the Ballarat School of Mines) in 1952 and 1953, followed by the National Gallery School and RMIT Art school, Melbourne between 1858 and 1859. He studied at the Slade School of Fine Art (London) from 1960 to 1962, with a Summer School at the Academia della Belle Arti, Perugia, Italy in 1961. Myth, narrative and people form an important place in the work of Murray Walker, and he has worked in many mediums including printmaking, painting, collage, assemblage, ceramics and tapestry design. These models of RBYC Race Management boats (Blue Gum, RB8 and Tarni) have been donated by Graham Noel and can be viewed in a glass cabinet of the Olympic restaurant at RBYC. Graham originally donated the model of Tarni to the club in 2005, in acknowledgement of the valuable work done by race management volunteers. The model was presented to Harry Tedston on his retirement as Race Officer in 2008. The original Kew Town Hall offices were located in Walpole Street, Kew. Before 1960, even though it had been much discussed over a number of decades, Kew did not have a 'civic hall'. When required, events such as balls, exhibitions or theatrical events were held in the Kew Recreation Hall in Walpole Street. A new City Hall was to be opened by Sir Robert Menzies in 1960. It was located beside the Alexandra Gardens in Cotham Road. It is now used as the Kew Library. Cr Hugh George Ferguson (at right) was born in June 1900 in Williamstown. After his family moved to Kew, they lived in Fernhurst Grove while his future wife’s family lived in Fellows Street. He married in 1940 and subsequently joined the Australian Imperial Forces. After the war he worked as a Billeting Affairs Organiser for the Dutch Government, resettling migrants in Australia. He also worked in advertising as an account manager, and was campaign director for Arthur Rylah is Victorian politics. He organised the first major trade fairs at the Royal Exhibition Buildings after the Second World War, including a World Trade Fair. He built a home in Brougham Street and represented North Ward on Kew Council from 1952 to 1968. He was elected Mayor for the 1959-60 term. He died in 1975, aged 75, and is buried in Boroondara Cemetery.An item of historical interest donated by members of the Dods family in 2006. Florence Ada Zull, known as Ada was an illustrator for the 'New Idea for Women" magazine. In 1961 she lived in Brunswick. From 1963 she and her husband Robert built a Alistair Knox designed house at 2 (lot 8) Metery Road, Eltham.
