Author: Alan Judge Holt amassed a significant collection of historical material related to the Surrey Hills area. Born in Moonee Ponds in 1912 to Edmund Holt and Ellen Ruby Sutton, he married Edna Jean Pallot in 1937. They lived at 62 Broughton Road, Surrey hills, had 3 sons and were strongly associated with the Surrey Hills Methodist Church. Alan was Secretary of the Victorian Lands Department and in his spare time recorded the occupancy of every property in Surrey Hills and Mont Albert at the beginning of each decade from 1890 to 1980. His collection of files and individual cards covers people, places, churches, clubs, businesses and other organisations in the area. Alan used this information to give talks and tours of the area and gifted his material to the local history collection through Jocelyn Hall.Unpublished manuscript / notes written by Alan Holt about settlers in and around Surrey Hills bound in-house. Dr L L Smith was a pioneer of the Vermont District. He owned 250 acres in the area bounded by Boronia, Canterbury and Heatherdale Roads and the creek. The property was known as L L Vale after which the road was named. Name was changed to Boronia Road in later years. He was a Doctor with rooms in the City, was a member of Parliament.Sepia Postcard of L L Road, Vermont (now Boronia Road) taken in the early 1900s (card is postmarked 27 Aug 1909). Shows the road going down it is presumed to the creek. It is possible that the house is that of Dr.L.L.Smith. See History.|Orchard in background is the Finger orchard. Nor must Mr. H W Gregory, the Acting Conductor's part be forgotten. He worked assiduously and earnestly, doing all possible to keep up the high standard of the Society's work. The programme presented to-night is also the result of his interpretation of the descriptive works of these modern composers, In bidding farewell to him at this Concert the Committee and members desire to express their thanks for the energy with which he has carried out the duties of Acting Conductor. We expect, at a very early date to the return of Mr. W C Frazier to Bendigo. He is bringing, with him a choice of selection of the very latest and best of English and other part songs (both of the earlier composers and of the ultra-modern school) and patrons can look forward to a fine series of programmes.
