The Massey Ferguson Gates are better known as the H.V. McKay Gates. The gates were the ceremonial and security entrance to one of the most important industrial sites in Melbourne’s west, the Sunshine Harvester Factory. They were not just gates; they were the symbolic front door to the Sunshine Harvester Works Factory and carried Sunshine’s industrial identity into the second half of the 20th century. Sunshine Cabinet Works began in 1920 under Scottish cabinetmaker George Mochrie, grew into one of Sunshine’s major post‑WWI industries, survived a devastating 1923 fire, expanded across multiple sites in Devonshire Road, and by the 1960s operated a huge factory on Ballarat Road employing over 200 people.
