A particular triumph for Alfred Joseph Towers was his win at the Romsey and West Bourke Agricultural Society's Annual Potato Show in 1927, taking the trophy from the best potato growers in Victoria, and from the Romsey district in particular, which at that time was famed for its potato production and quality. This programme gives details of the 1966 Annual Show of the Warrnambool Agricultural Society. As in most country towns and cities in Australia, the annual agricultural show in Warrnambool is an important social and agricultural event, especially for the farming community. The Warrnambool Agricultural Society, originally called the Villiers and Heytesbury Agricultural Association, was established in 1854 with the first show held at Warrnambool in 1855 and continuing to the present day. This booklet is of interest as a souvenir of the Warrnambool Agricultural Society Annual Show from 50 years ago. It is of historical interest as it gives an insight into farming in the local Warrnambool area in the 1960s. This is a booklet of 60 pages. The cover has black printing and black and white photographs on the front cover and an advertisement on the back cover. The pages contain names of the Society’s office bearers, donors and details of the Show competitions and judging.

Kraft-Walker Cheese Company commenced in Allansford in 1935 leasing the factory premises from Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory Company. Dairy companies entered competitions organised by the Dairy Industry Association and associated organisations and local agricultural societies to encourage improvement in products. Some of these awards are considered prestigious and highly regarded within the industry. The certificates were passed to Cheese World Museum by the factory management.A blue background full colour certificate and a cream cartouche with a darker banner across it and the insignia of the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria; in the lower right hand corner of this section is the Australian coat of arms; around this are grasses, grapes and wheat. On the left hand side and across the bottom are images in various shapes. This postcard appears to have been produced so various judges and stewards could reply directly to the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria to accept their positions at the 1915 Show. The 1915 did not go ahead, as the Showgrounds was offered to the Department of Defence for use in response to the First World War. Although staff operations would move to the Melbourne Showgrounds during the Show, for some time, outside of Showtime, the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria's offices were in the CBD on Collins Street. Improving meat production In 1905, the English firm Thomas Borthwick & Son set up operations in Australia. Borthwick was a major meat exporter and ran freezing works as well as having its own cattle stations in Australia. From the early 19th century, Borthwick encouraged the production of quality beef by awarding prizes at agricultural shows throughout Australia. In the early 1950s the Australian Meat Board and The Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria (RASV) also took steps to encourage beef producers. Perpetual Trophy For the Coronation Show in 1953, Borthwick introduced a perpetual trophy. The Borthwick Trophy was awarded to the Fat Cattle Champion with the winner being judged from the best team of three steers under three years old. The winning team was the one that gained the highest aggregate score from both the live and carcase judging. Initially, the relevant winning Breed Society retained the trophy for a year and returned it for the following Royal Melbourne Show but the Borthwick Trophy is now displayed at the Melbourne Royal offices on the Melbourne Showgrounds. Established in 1870, the National (renamed the Royal in 1890) Agricultural Society of Victoria, uses 'Speed the Plough' as its motto which is embossed on the medal. The engraved part of this medal reads “City of Caulfield Horticultural Display 1981, 1st Prize".Round, gold plated medal measuring 50mm in diameter with "The Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria" embossed around edge, an engraved central plate with an embossed representation of a sheep above and cattle below. The engraved side of the medal has "The Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria" around the edge, and the engraved part in the middle reads "CITY of CAULFIELD / HORTICULTURAL DISPLAY / 1981 / 1st Prize".
