The Sunshine Municipal Offices in Alexandra Avenue Sunshine opened in 1967. The building was designed by Gordon Stuart Warmington, a former Sunshine resident. The building was a substantial modernist civic structure with a distinctive boomerang / Y‑shaped plan. Its most iconic feature is the dramatic stained‑glass mural panel projecting over the main entrance featuring a modern sun motif referencing Sunshine’s industrial identity and the Sunshine Harvester Works logo. During the 1970's and 1980's additional wings and extension were added to the eastern side of the building. The building served as the City of Sunshine’s Town Hall until the municipality was abolished in 1994, when Sunshine merged into the newly created City of Brimbank. After the new Brimbank Community and Civic Centre in Hampshire Road opened in 2016, the Council moved its corporate and library operations to the new building. The Alexandra Avenue site was sold to developers in 2018 for $5.58 million. The building then fell into disrepair and was subject to a number of arsonist attacks, squatting, drug taking and other criminal activity. The building is protected by heritage overlays, particularly for its stained‑glass mural and original 1960s form. In November 2025, the City of Brimbank ordered the owners of the site to undertake some emergency demolition works to make the site safe. The stained‑glass mural panel was dismantled in pieces and has been store away for future restoration works by the City of Brimbank.These photographs record the part demolition of a former City of Sunshine Civic building from December 2025 to February 2026. These photographs, taken by The Advocate newspaper in 2000, show the City of Brimbank Municipal Offices, formerly the administrative building of the City of Sunshine. In 2016, Brimbank relocated its civic operations to the newly constructed Brimbank Community and Civic Centre on Hampshire Road, Sunshine. Subsequently, the site was sold to private developers and remained vacant for many years. During this prolonged period, the building was repeatedly vandalised, and several fires were lit inside. Ultimately, the City of Brimbank issued the developer with a demolition notice. By the late 1800s increasing numbers of Australian working men had at least one good suit as a sign of respectability. Suits could be purchased ready-made, made to measure from a local tailor. The introduction of electric irons meant that the old flat irons and gas stove no longer had to be used. This electric iron would have been used to flatten seams during the tailoring process. This item is representative of a now rare craft that has diminished in the contemporary world.An electric tailor's iron. It has a green base and a black handle. The body of the iron has a flat back and curves to a point at its front. Its handle is metal and is attached with large screws at the top and back side of the base. The top of the handle is covered in black plastic that has finger grooves. there is a black iron resting stand.

Nell Pledger - Eleanor Elizabeth George (1888-1963) was the wife of Percy Henry (Harry) Pledger (1884-1954). They married in Paddington, London in 1908. Percy was a tailor in Barnet, Middlesex and the family migrated to Australia in 1923, arriving in Brisbane on 11 December 1923. They settled in Surrey Hills. Percy had a tailoring and later knitwear business at 418 Canterbury Road, almost opposite Alexandra Avenue (? also at another time in Hansen's Terrace in Canterbury Road). The family was musical. After leaving school son Percy joined the staff at Allan’s Music House and rose to become their chief accountant. He also taught and played the violin in a number of orchestras. (See individual entry for him - SH1207) Jessie married Arthur John Marston Bate (1906-1994) in 1941; he was born in Birmingham and his father was also a tailor. Arthur gained BA and MA from the University of New Zealand. He was also primarily a musician, but worked in theatre, broadcasting and teaching in New Zealand and at the State Theatre in Melbourne and the ABC. He was a pilot during WW2 (SERN 255363), rising to the rank of Flight Lieutenant and also a RAAF Chaplain. Jessie and Arthur lived in Hawthorn, Ashwood and Mount Waverley. They are buried in Box Hill Cemetery (CE-213-0029) along with daughter Christine Elizabeth. In the 1920s Stanley Bertram Pledger, along with Harold Sydserf, assisted Stan's brother Percy to establish the Surrey Hills Musical Club. It soon increased to 12 or 15 members, giving 4 concerts a year. They combined with the Surrey Hills Dramatic Society to produce operettas. In time the group expanded to a total of 30 players and became the Camberwell Symphony Orchestra. Stanley Bertram Pledger (1912-1996) is listed in electoral rolls at a number of addresses around Surrey Hills: 1927 - 36 Suffolk Road; 1940s - Essex Road; 1977 - Burwood. All entries consistently give his occupation as manufacturer and it is assumed that this was with the family business.
