Letter written by Signalman Angus MacKAY 2486 5BTN AIEF at Seymour and addressed to E O'SUllivan ESQ. Delgett Park Street, South Yarra Letter dated 8.7.1915 A single page letter when folded becomes an envelope. Paper is lined and handwritten in black ink. The letter written to his uncle mentions pay and allotment monies.ww1, letter, pay allotments

Angus Mackay enlisted on 22.4.1915 in the 7th Reinforcements 5th Battalian AIF No 2486. He later transfered to the 57th Battalian AIF. Wounded in action and while being treated in the field a shell burst overhead killing him instantly on 19.8.1916. The wallet and photos belonged to his best mate George Freeman No 2485. They joined up together both aged 18 years and went wherever the other went.The wallet is a dark green in colour. It consists of three layers of material. The outer cover and inner section are both cotton and sewn together around the edges. Where the photos sit there is a fine layer of felt that sits over the photo to protect it. The photos are Post Card style copies of the originals for display purposes.The wallet has no markings or inscriptions. The grave photo on the Cross has the following; “IN LOVING MEMORY, KILLED IN ACTION, No 2486, SIG ANGUS MACKAY, HQ S” The rest is hidden under the flowers. The photo of Mackay himself has a seal or stamp in the right hand corner at the bottom; “W.Vincent Kelly Bendigo”wallet, photos, angus mackay, no 2486

Boys Will Be Boys tells of a boy who was supposed to driving the whim horse, but in the absence of the braceman, he amused himself by taking a truck out of the cage and putting it back again. Then he started stepping backwards and forwards by holding onto a rope across the shaft, then fell down the shaft. He got a severe shaking. Cheers and Groans are about the long hours the miners worked and the introduction of the 8 hour day. Primitive Shafts is about the Victoria Reef Shafts. Profit has been earned but values are now unprofitable. At the Stanfield shaft, erection of plan was completed and shaft sunk to 344 feet. X cuts put out at 230 and 310 feet.
