George Mackay's 'History of Bendigo' is renowned as one of the definitive works which record the early life of the city. Originally published in 1891, it sold steadily for many years. This is a reprint of the original work. This text sets out the lively events that marked the first forty years of the city's establishment and growth. George Mackay was born at Castlemaine in July, 1860, son of Margaret and Angus Mackay. He worked for the Bendigo Advertiser, later to be an editor there, later becoming joint owner. George Mackay died in May, 1948.
