This set of three photographs was taken the 30th of August 1982 during a visit to the Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo by the Deputy Chief of the General Staff - Major General David Frederick Walter Engel AO, OBE. As there are no annotations on the photo, the name of the Brigadier is unknown. LTCOL Peter Eddy was the CO of the Army Survey Regiment from 1981 to 1992 and handed over to LTCOL Jorge Gruszka, who commanded the unit from 1982 to 1985.This is set of three photographs taken on the occasion of a visit to the Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo by the Deputy Chief of the General Staff - Major General David Frederick Walter Engel AO, OBE on the 30th of August 1982. This work is from a series centred around the Chinese proverb “to hold a book in one’s hand is to hold a house of gold” in which the artist positions himself within sites of colonial power. Set within the National Wool Museum gallery, the artist references the pose of an exhausted shearer after a long day of arduous labour. However he is reclining while reading The Fire Stick by Wulla Merrii, a novel set against the 1891 Queensland Shearer’s Strike, questioning cultural stereotypes and how they pertain to concepts of work and leisure. Dressed in sub fusc, his official uniform as an Oxford scholar, Thompson is a defiant intellectual challenging past and continued misperceptions of First Nations people, while embracing both the intersections of his identity and his ancestral heritage. Dr Christian Thompson AO is a Bidjara man of the Kunja Nation with Irish and Chinese heritage. His practice spans across video, photography, sculpture, textiles, performance and sound, evolving through a process of auto – ethnography. While employing various modes of research, he connects his own experience to larger social, political, cultural meanings and understandings. His doctoral research and art practice has had a critical impact on International and Australian art, making global history as one of the first Australian Indigenous students at Oxford University. This collection of 22 photos was most likely taken in 1984. Mr Gordon Scholes AO was the Minister for Defence in the Hawke Government from 1983 to 1984. It’s evident in these photos he was taken on a tour through the production areas. Mr John Brumby AO at this time was the Federal Member for Bendigo. He later moved on to Victorian state politics, serving as Treasurer from 2000 to 2007 and Premier from 2007 to 2010. Key Army Survey Regiment personnel identified include COL Alex Laing, the Director of Survey from 1983 to 1988 and CO LTCOL Jorge Gruszka who led the unit from 1982 to 1985. The rank of the senior officer is not known, however would have been a Major-General or above, due to the presence of the aide-de-camp (female captain). This is a set of 22 photographs of a visit to the Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo circa 1984, by Mr Gordon Scholes AO, who was the Minister for Defence. Robert Jacks is widely acknowledged as one of Australia’s most important and accomplished abstract artists. Jacks studied sculpture at Prahran Technical College from 1958–60 and painting at RMIT in 1961–62. In 1968 his work was included in the landmark exhibition, The Field, at the National Gallery of Victoria. Jacks often worked across various mediums simultaneously producing sculpture, painting and works on paper which directly informed one another. Bookending his career, in 2014, the year he died, Jacks’ practice received renewed attention when the National Gallery of Victoria mounted the major retrospective exhibition Robert Jacks: Order and Variation, in which he played a pivotal role. This work is from the Metropolis series that drew on his experience living in Manhattan, as well as the view from his balcony in Lavender Bay, Sydney. From the balcony he could see the Sydney Harbour Bridge, with cars, buses and trains, as well as ships on the harbour and planes in the sky, all coming from different directions, reminding him of the futuristic images in Fritz Lang’s 1927 silent film of the same name. Family circumstances dictated that Alan Reed leave school before his sixteenth birthday. He was employed in a Chartered Accountants office until 'called up' for National Service Training in the RAAF. Becoming airborne for the first time in a Dakota DC3 changed his life forever and he applied for and was accepted by the RAAF as a Trainee Pilot. He retired as Chancellor in October 2018. WWII historical significancePortrait of Vivian Bullwinkel AO, MBE (1915 - 2000)Vivian Bullwinkel, a Second World War army nursing sister, is best known as the sole survivor of the infamous Banka Island massacre, in which 21 of her colleagues were killed by Japanese troops. Her courage while a prisoner pf the Japanese for over three and a half years exemplified the bravery of Australian women in war, and her distinguished postwar career was marked by many humanitarian achievements.

In late 2000, Arthritis Victoria (formerly the Rheumatism and Arthritis Association of Victoria) celebrated the 80th birthday of its founder, rheumatologist Dr Leslie Koadlow AO (1920-2006). Around 90 people attended the celebratrions at AV's headquarters, including Dr Koadlow's family, colleagues, and friends. This photo appears on page 26 of the Vol 14 Issue 01, Autumn 2001 edition of the Arthritis Foundation of Victoria's quarterly magazine, Update.
