Reverend John Ashley was a key initiator of missionary services to seafarers isolated and confined to moored ships or islands with families in the Bristol Channel of the 1830s. Attention was also focussed by other individuals, groups and churches in ports and led eventually to the establishment of the Mission to seamen, London which in turn inspired establishment of similar services in other countries and ports. Rev'd Kerr-Johnson who arrived in Australia was appointed by a Bethel Union of non-conformist churches in late 1856 and delivered the first shipboard service in 1857 for the Victorian Mission to seamen. refs: 1895-1905 Epitomised history... Laura and Bernard Ashley began printing fabric in their London kitchen in 1953. Commencing with head scarves and place-mats they gradually developed table-ware and bed sheets. In 1960 they entered the Fashion world with blouses and smocks . The ‘swinging sixties’ saw them in great demand for the feminine florals and flounces of the ‘maxi’ fashions and they opened in smart South Kensington, London. In 1970 they opened franchises in Australia, Canada, Japan, San Francisco that sold their range of fabrics, dresses and accessories. In 1980 home furnishings were added to the range. Records of members of the Ashley family. Stanley Edgar Ashley married Vera Ama Gravenall in 1939. They lived in Williams Street Greensborough, and Stan had a men's wear and drapery store in Main Street Greensborough. He was elected to Council for the North Ward of the City of Heidelberg in August 1954, and died in December 2002. Story by Cdr Ashley Brown, officer of the watch about an attack by Japanese aircraft on the HMAS Austrlia May 7, 1942. Also an account of an accidental bombing of the ship by the United States Airforce. It was part of a series of articles called 'The War I saw' published in the Herald Sun newspaper. Date unknown. This document was from a file of information about guest speakers (see also 00812-00822 and 00830-00837). So it is assumed that Cdr Ashley-Brown was approached to speak at a Legacy function. Legatees met regularly and had guest speakers to entertain and inform on different subjects at their Tuesday Luncheons. The Tottenham Yard began as a modest goods yard supporting local industries in Braybrook, Tottenham, and West Footscray, the Sunshine industrial belt and the nearby munitions and explosives factories Key features of the early yard included a small number of sidings, a goods shed, a basic loading / unloading facilities and a connection to the Tottenham triangle (Sunshine–Footscray–North Melbourne junction). As the yard expanded with additional siding and larger marshalling areas, there was a requirement to maintain the Ashley Street North – South access route for private and commercial travel. The work involved to solve this problem was to elevate the railway yard and place Ashley Street through a tunnel. This railway underpass for many years was simply known as the Ashley Street Tunnel. By the 1970s, the Tottenham Yard had become one of the largest freight yards in Victoria, second only to Dynon. In the 1982, the level crossing gates at the southern end of tunnel were removed, the tunnel extended southwards and the former Tottenham Railway Station was replaced with an elevated one above the new tunnel extension. During these works the road surface level was lowered to allow for higher trucks to pass through. At this point of time, the reference to tunnel was replaced with underpass. During the 1990’s and 2000’s, there was a decline in the use of the Tottenham Yard and many sidings were removed, shorten, converted to storage or left unused.
