Russell Mockridge b1928 d1958 was described 'as the greatest cyclist of all time'. He died during a race in collision with a bus that also claimed the lives of two fellow riders and a spectator. Mockridge started in 1946 by winning his first race of 40km with the Geelong Amateur Cycling Club. His wins soon earned him the nickname of the Geelong Flyer. He represented Australia at the London Olympic Games in 1948 and the Helsinki Games in 1952. He also represented Australia in the 1950 British Empire Games in Auckland where he took gold in the 1000 sprint and the 1000m time trial and silver in the 4000m pursuit. In Paris 1952 he won the Amateur Grand Prix and the following day the Open Grand Prix, beating world professional champion Reg Harris. Later that year he won Manchester Wheelers Club Muratti Cup again beating Reg Harris. He turned professional a year later and teamed with Sid Patterson and Roger Arnold to win the Paris 6 day race in 1955. Mockridge was one of 60 of 150 entrants to finish the 1955 Tour de France. He won 12 consecutive Australian championships. Mockridge was married and had a daughter, Melinda (1955)Russell Mockridge was described 'as the greatest cyclist of all time'. Esther Bottomley was born on 8th February 1983 in Terang, Victoria but moved to Mount Beauty and became affiliated with the Birkebeiner Nordic Ski Club. She was the first female Australian athlete to compete at three WInter Olympic Games in Cross Country. She competed at Torino in 2006, Vancouver in 2010 and Sochi in 2014. Esther has also competed in events in the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in the sprint event in 2003 and 2005. Her best World Cup finish was 18th in a team sprint event at Canada in 2009. Esher was also the winner of the Women's Kangaroo Hoppet in 2010 and 2011. First held in 1972 the Bendigo International Madison is an athletics and cycling carvial which takes place in Bendigo ove the March Labour Day long weekend. Events include 400m footraces and the largest outdoor Madison event in the world. The madison is a track cycling race in which 17 pairs of riders race over a hectic 200 laps of the Tom Flood Sports Centre in Bendigo. Riders firstly try to gain a lap advantage over other teams or score sprint points during the 34 sprints dotted throughout the race. These four medals relate to the Melbourne to Warrnambool Cycle Race. This race was first held in 1895 and continues to the presenr day. It was originally a handicap race from Warrnambool to Melbourne but after 1938 it became a Melbourne to Warrnambool race After 1995 it became a scratch race and today the distance is shorter with the race starting from Avalon. It is the second oldest one-day cycling race in the world and the longest one-day cycling race in Australia. Four of these medals were awarded to Ron Vernon from the Footscray Club. All riders who complete the race in a given time are awarded a Time Medallion. In 1947 Ron Vernon, riding the latest Healing Championship Cycle came in 26th. In 1948, riding off the 47 minute handicap, he took 7th place. IHe also won the Colac Sprint in that race. In 1950 he took 9th place. The fourth medal is a Time Medallion awarded to a cyclist in 1960. These medals are of considerable interest as mementoes of the Melbourne to Warrnambool Cycle Race, an important sporting event associated with Warrnambool and one that is known Australia-wide and internationally..1 A round metal medal with a dark blue band around the edge, a light blue strip across the middle and a light blue tab at the bottom of the medal. Captain Herbert Humphries Hunter (1882-1915) was a Bendigo Dentist when he joined the army. He was a talented sprinter, swimmer and boxer who established the Bendigo Hound and Hares Athletics club in 1901. He was a past president of the Bendigo football League. He was killed in Action at Gallipoli and is buried at the Dardenelles, Turkey. Malwyn Williams was a doctor who studied at Melbourne University 1905-1908. He was also a surgeon.
