After the 1939 bushfires, the Forests Commission Victoria invested heavily in a radically new communications network. After suffering some inevitable delays due to the war, radio VL3AA switched into full operation in October 1945 proudly beaming out 200 watts across the State. But by today’s standards, the technology was primitive and the reception poor unless the user was on a high point somewhere. The radio signal was "line-of-sight" and bounced between fire towers and relay transmitters across the mountains back to the District offices. The advent of solid-state electronics in the 1960s replaced the more delicate valve sets which enabled greater use of vehicle mounted radios. The Commission continued to research, develop and build new radios at its many workshops around Victoria. The network was supported by a large team of skilled radio technicians. The more secure and versatile State Mobile Radio (SMR) digital trunk system came into operation in about 1995. Upgraded Tait Radios were purchased in 2014 after recommendations of the 2009 Bushfires Royal Commission. But it was the convergence of separate technologies such as 5G mobile phones, high-capacity and light-weight lithium batteries, Wi-Fi, the ever-expanding internet, cloud data storage, digital cameras, GPS, personal organisers and hundreds of supporting Apps into powerful smartphones and tablets which revolutionised bushfire communications from the mid-2000s. Manufactured in both UK and Australia, the 400 series telephone was developed for the PMG in 1957 based on the British, prototype, no.700, Bakelite phone. They became obsolescent by the early 1960s but because some magneto exchanges persisted in Australia for another quarter of a century and alternatives were not cost effective, PMG/Telecom regularly repaired or refurbished these obsolete phones until they were superseded by automatic exchanges. As supply of electricity became available in the Moorabbin Shire c 1920 homes gradually changed from Gas lighting to Electrical lighting and bakelite was used for fittings. Bakelite was a safe non-conductor of the electric current. Housewives, who had ironed clothes with flat irons heated on the hearth of open fires, were delighted to be able to stand on a chair and remove the light globe and plug in their new clean and efficient electric iron. These items are probably American ). A lot of carved bakelite jewellery/buttons/buckles were manufactured in the U.S.A. The orange (red?) one is especially reminiscent of American bakelite, due to its polished look. The other one is probably butterscotch bakelite. Originally it would have been white or cream, but the plastic oxidises over time and changes colour to a butterscotch colour. The rectangular one is probably a belt slide. Some types of belts don't have any holes in them. The belt is just slid through the clasp. There is no notch in the centre bar indicating that there was never a hasp. ( Info. from Button Bower)These two items are good examples of dress accessories typical of the first half of the 20th century era.Two buckles probably made of bakelite. 1950.1 is orange/ red, circular with a metal prong. 1950.2 is a slide, rectangular shape, light salmon pink (butterscotch) with no prong.buckles dress-accessories women's-clothing bakelite

Baby brush and comb sets were often given as Christening presents. The pure bristles were especially soft for use on infant's hair. Children's hair is often a problem because it is supremely fine and may be difficult to care for because of its nearly downy softness and fluffiness. Up until the age of 7-10, this fine hair will remain about the head. Children’s hair is different from adult hair in texture, density, and likely also colour, body and so on. Hair's traits change over time as humans physically develop, and even age. Like the rest of the human body, (example, teeth), hair has different stages of development spanning the full lifetime from birth to death.
