Local racing steward of 50 years experience, Mr Frank Beattie ...This is one of a series of eighteen plaques which commemorated some of the winner of the Grand Annual Steeplechase which is held each year in Warrnambool. The first Grand Annual was held in 1872 as the Warrnambool Handicap Steeplechase. Buxton was the winner in 1963. Local racing steward of 50 years experience, Mr Frank Beattie, ranks the performance of buxton as among the best. He won the Brierly steeplechase on the Tuesday of the 3 day race meeting and won the grand Annual two days later ridden by jockey Noel Cole. This series of plaques were painted by local artist Leslie Lamey and were originally in the members enclosure at the Warrnambool RacecourseThese items relate to a significant part of Warrnambool's sporting and social history..1 Painted white rectangular tin plaque with rolled edges with painting of jockeys silks and cap. The colours are green brown and yellow in opposing squares on the front with brown sleeves. The cap is yellow. Warwick Farm was established by my late grand parents Polly (nee Mary Ann Cole) and George Barratt and their 5 children George Jnr, William, James, John (my maternal Grand Father) and Teddy. Their story is told in a book "The wine of Courage" written in 1977 by N.M. Roberts ISBN 0 7223 1003. Their story started when their bank closed their doors on 13 April 1893 and they lost their cafe business in South Melbourne. Two days later, they were ready to head for a new start in Queensland when they saw in the morning paper that the Dandenong Ranges had been thrown open to land release to people. A few days later, having been granted land they headed to Ferntree Gully. From there they walked to the new holding in what would become Olinda. Then George with his sons help had to build a shelter for the family for the night. They chose to name the property "Warwick Farm". Work on the house started a few days later with help from neighbours Mr. Dodd, Mr Beattie, the O'Sheas and others. Come November, Ruby was born. Then bushfire burnt down the newly built house. Back to a bark hut until another house could be built. The new house became a guest house at the suggestion of a neighbour, when George couldn't sell timber and was waiting for crops. The first guests visited in 1898 and another baby, Percival, was born. ....................................................... It was George's son Jim, who was a skilled carpenter and axeman who extended the home to take from 12 to 30 guests. These two items come from the photography business of A. Bronkhorst who had his studio at 78 Koroit Street Warrmambool. No further information is available on Mr Bronkhorst. The folder contained copies of photographs of two funeral hearses. These were ordered by Jim Leahy who operated an undertaking business in the mid to late 20th century in Fairy Street (originally established in the 1860s as Beattie and Phillips). The business is now operated by the O’Sullivan family. These items are retained as a memento of the Bronkhorst Warrnambool photography business. .1 This is a buff-coloured envelope with dark blue printing on the front and handwriting in black and blue ink. .2 This is a blue and buff-coloured folder that once contained some photographs. The printing on the folder is brown and the photographer’s name is stamped on the inside of the folder. .1 ‘A. This collection of papers have come from the offices of William Ardlie a local solicitor. He was born in Moonee Ponds in 1843 and was admitted as an attorney and solicitor of the supreme Court in 1865. From 1867 to 1878 he was in partnership with George Barber and then continued to practise until his late eighties which made him the oldest practising lawyer in Australia. He was involved in local councils and organisations such as the Hospital and Anglican Church.He was associated with several large homes in Warrnambool including Wyton presently the home of Emmanual College Warrnambool. He died in 1933.His son E L Ardlie also practised as a solicitor from the same offices from 1893. A number of the invoices included relate to the Estate of James drought who was a local policeman and owner of a number of properties and operated in various trades such as George Ramsay manufacturer of stoves and chimneys, J Rogers plumber & gas fitter and Christian & Dodds who were carpenters and joiners. There are a number of documents which relate to the Chinese, many of whom operated market gardens along the Merri River. They were a familiar part of Warrnambool from around 1872 until around 1940. The names mentioned in these documents include Ah Foo,Charles Quing Bow, Andrew Quing Bow Ah Bing Ah Jing Ah Moon and Ah Seong. They were reknown for their supply of fresh vegetables to the people of the town. They leased land from John Moore. These documents are a cross section of the types of documents which were used and are still used in the operation of businesses. They provide a social snapshot of people and the business which they conducted with their solicitors in this case William and E L Ardlie who were a long standing legal firm in the district. She was born to John Gilbert and Annie Cameron Gilbert, and had seven sisters and one brother. The Orbost Workers' Band and the Orbost Town Band amalgamated in 1913 to form the Orbost Municipal Band under the conductorship of Mr Charles Spink. This photo, taken in 1907, is probably of the orbost Town Band. In the photo are : Percy Watt, Geoff Beattie, Bill Gluth, Charles Spink, Bert McCay, R. Cotterill, Fred Smooker, George Draffin and Jin Lynn. The various Orbost bands have played a major role in the Orbost community activities as well as providing entertainment and musical experiences for the many members. A black and white photograph of two rows of men,front row kneeling and back row standing. The men are dressed in suits with waistcoats and are wearing hats.Each is holding a brass instrument. -

"The Gesture" was an independent organ of the Deaf and Dumb having no direct connection with any single organisation. Its aim was to help all agencies established to promote the advancement of the Deaf and Dumb. The aim was to be the "Voice" of the Deaf and Dumb of Australasia". To educate the public as to the real condition and needs of the afflicted brothers and sisters, to bring prominently before the hearing and speaking community the peculiar difficulties and obstacles that Deaf Mutes have to encounter in the battle of life. The Conder Shield was sponsored by Major Wally Conder, a keen sportsman (amongst other occupations,) who sought to promote wrestling and boxing during his time as president of the Victorian Amateur Wrestling and Boxing Association. Presented to the winning club of the Inter-Club Gymnasium Competition, over a series of matches in individual athleticism. These included skipping, roller cycling and chinning bar, as well as light-weight, middle-weight and welter-weight wrestling. The clubs that vied for this shield were the Trojans (from the RVIB), Bonbeach Surf and Life Saving Club and Beattie's Physical Culture School. In 1934, the Trojans team consisted of Neil Westh, Charlie Bradley, A. McDonald, T. Hanlon, B. Cook and coach/captain V. Blucher. Mr Henry Vincent Blucher was a former police constable to lost his sight in 1931 due to a car accident, and who had previously held the title of Victorian novice middleweight. A photo of Mr William Bernard Wigston who left a substantial amount to Melbourne Legacy in his will in 1968. The note from Legatee Aaron Beattie says William Wigston was born in London in 1880 and died in Melbourne in 1968. He was educated at Lancing College in Southern England (near Brighton). His father was a London solicitor. The photo was taken about 35 years before being given to Legacy which may have been approx 1933. The article from The Age says that Mr William Wigston was a financier living in Toorak and had died aged 88. He left in his will, approximately $150,000 to Junior Legacy and the same to the RSPCA. The executive officer of Legacy, Mr Ivan Layton, believed it was the highest donation that they had ever received at that time. The photo was produced by Talma, which was a photography business in Melbourne. The article was part of collection of items about bequests made to Legacy put together by a former archive committee.
