"PHYLIS CHAN" wearing her winter Royal Australian Air Force Nursing Uniform and hat". 2. "ALEC CHEW M.B.E. was a Prisoner of War in Ambon, an island off the western tip of Irianjia. He escaped with 7 other prisoners, and tramped across the island away from the camp. With the help of local islanders and Dutch authorities, they used a variety of canoes, prau, and boats to island hop their way to Darwin. Shortly afterwards, Alec returned to the islands hoping to rescue other stranded soldiers. He later joined "Z Force". commandos who remained behind enemy lines to cause disruption to the enemy and gain as much useful information as possible for the allied armies. 3. "GEORGE FONG" joined the RAAF in 1942. He was an Engineering student at Melbourne University and a talented jazz musician. George was mustered as an airman pilot, commissioned in 1943, and sent to Britain. LES KUM JEW (left)- in 1942, joined the Volunteer Defence Corps, then the RAAF, with JACK GOON (right). GUS HOMEMING (centre) enlisted in 1942 in the Royal Australian Artillery, and was posted to New Guinea. In 1944, he was seconded to the Allied translation and Interrogation Section to work in POW camps. To this end, and with other students including Jack Goon, he learned Japanese at Sydney University. He was then posted to Morotai. In 1946, he was sent to Japan with the Australian Intelligence Corps of the British Commonwealth Occupation Forces. From 1946-51, he was in charge of the Inland Sea Patrol. Promoted to Chief Administration Officer in charge of Tokushima Prefecture and its ten million people. He returned to Australia in 1952 and remained in Intelligence service until 1957. 2. EUNICE LEONG (top left) worked from 1940 as a wireless operator for the Army in Melbourne, Sydney and Alice Springs, and as a signals instructor at Bonegilla. Her sister, VALDA (top right) worked as a radar plotter with the WAAAF, and her brother MAX (bottom right) went with the British Commonwealth Occupation Forces to Japan after the War. 3. NP 22-2 (Navigational Plotting) Tasmania. MERCATOR PROJECTION. This series of charts were used for the training of RAAF Navigators. These charts were produced and printed at the Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo. .3 RAAF PLOTTING CHART AUSTRALIA - SOUTHEAST. NP 27 is Based on LAMBERT CONFORMAL CONIC PROJECTION. This series of charts was used by RAAF Navigators for the planning of RAAF flights. These charts were produced and printed at the Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo. .4 RAAF LONG RANGE PLOTTING CHART. NP 43-4 AUSTRALIA WESTERN. MERCATOR PROJECTION. This series of maps were used for the planning of RAAF flights. Of Particular note these charts were used to plot "Rhumb Lines or loxodromes" where a course crosses all Meridians (Lines of latitude and longitude) at the same angle. On Mercator projection charts Rhumb lines are conveniently shown as straight lines and are also lines of constant compass bearing. Rhumb lines are usually longer than the shortest distance between two points. The shortest distance between two points on the earth's surface is called a "Great Circle Route" which is a route on a circular path on the surface of the earth where the centre of that circle is also the centre of the earth. Great Circle Routes on a Mercator Projection are however curves and harder to plot. These charts were produced and printed at the Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo. .5 RAAF LONG RANGE PLOTTING CHART. NP 43-7 SOLOMON ISLANDS. MERCATOR PROJECTION. Used for the planning of RAAF flights. .6 RAAF AIR STAFF PLANNING CHART NS 137-1 DARWIN NORTH WEST. AZIMUTHAL EQUIDISTANT PROJECTION. This series of charts were used for planning by the staff. The whole chart was produced by joining the four quadrant maps together. The charts are based on a single point of tangency (in this case Darwin) and shows radius (distance) in nautical miles to and from that point. A series of charts were produced centred on each of the major airfields in Northern Australia. These charts were produced and printed at the Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo. .7 RAAF AIR STAFF PLANNING CHART NS 137-2 DARWIN NORTH EAST. AZIMUTHAL EQUIDISTANT PROJECTION. IAN ALFRED (Joe) LYONS MBE Born 16.2.1915 in Bendigo enlisted in the RAAF aged 25 years on 27.5.1940, No 400095. Starting in the ranks as an LAC, he rose to Flt/Sgt pre-embarkation. He embarked for the Middle East on 2.11.1941before dis-embarking to serve with No 3 Sqd RAAF. During heavy action on 8.1.1942, his plane was forced down due to engine damage. It landed in an enemy minefield and when it came to a halt, its wheels were straddling a mine. After being rescued by a British officer, dozens of mines were located and dug up. On return, some 15 miles from base, the vehicle Lyons was travelling in hit a mine (on 9.1.1942), resulting in 5 KIA or WIA. Lyons spent 2 weeks in hospital with severe concussion and deafness. Lyons the embarked for Australia on 11.3.1942 before disembarking on 18.4.1942. He was posted to Townsville with 82nd Sqd on 27.6.1944. Subsequently he was posted to Noemfoor Island on 21.9.1944 as Operational with 82nd Sqd and promoted to Flt/Lt (Temp.) on 3.1.1945. On 6.1.1945 he was posted to 77Sqd as Operational on Morotai. This deployment ended on 9.7.1945. Records show that he flew 26 Strike/Attack missions and 13 others with both squadrons. Post WW2, Lyons remained with the RAAF with a new service number (033072). On 2.2.1948 he was posted to Japan before returning to Australia on 28.8.1948, apparently for medical reasons. He was appointed Flt/Lt on 23.9.1948 before returning to Japan and Korea on 22.8.1950. He was awarded an MBE as Operations Officer with 77Sqd for 'Outstanding enthusiasm and energy at 3 Korean bases'. A US Bronze Star was awarded to Lyons for 'Distinguished and meritorious service as Operations Officer in Korea during the period 14.10.1950 to 17.2.1951'. After Korea, Lyons received a number of posting from Victoria to Western Australia. He was awarded the Air Efficiency Medal in 1964. At his own request, Flt/Lt Ian Alfred 'Joe' Lyons MBE, retired from the RAAF HQ OP COM on 15.12.1967. The photograph is part of the Ian A. 'Joe' Lyons MBE Collection.Framed hand tinted colour head and shoulders photograph of a man in an RAAF uniform. The photograph is bordered with a light brown matt. THe wooden frome is painted white and gold. A white printed label bearing the name of the man is located below the photograph. Clear perspex covers the photograph. Malcolm John TAYLOR (born Bendigo, enlisted Melbourne) in the RAAF on 19.6.1942 aged 19 years, service No 418772. On 4.3.1943 his records show he was granted his Air Gunners badge, received the rank of Pilot Officer (P/O) on 25.6.1943, posted to No 31 Sqd RAAF (Beaufighters) on 1.10.1943, 4.12.1943 reported missing believed killed on a non operational flight from Aust. Often after a Service person returning from War, the Local Council would present them with a Certificate of Appreciation for their sacrifice's. In this case was to "Thomas Potter" after WW2. This is possibly 54610 Potter - Thomas RAAF, enlisted 27.4.1942 age 44. Discharged 22.3.1946 with the rank of Cpl in Air Defence HQ Townsville.Large Certificate on cream colour paper. Gold frame edges drawn inside of paper edge. Pictures of series of different service people standing over British & Australian flag and emblem of "City of Bendigo". Message of thanks and the name of returned soldier, followed by a poem and signature of Mayor and Town Clerk and stamp of Council. This is a set of 14 photographs of a visit to the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo on the 5th of June 1979 by the Chief of the General Staff (CGS) Lieutenant General Sir Donald Dunstan AC, KBE, CB. He was accompanied by his wife. They were escorted through the production areas of the Army Survey Regiment by the CO LTCOL Bob Skitch. Lieutenant General Sir Donald Dunstan AC, KBE, CB was an esteemed Australian Army officer, who was CGS from 1977 to 1982. Upon retirement from the Army in 1982, he was appointed to the position of Governor of South Australia from 1982 to 1991. LTCOL Bob Skitch was the CO of the Army Svy Rgt from 1976 to 1980. Also featuring in these photos is MAJ Peter Eddy, who was the OC of Air Survey Squadron. He was later promoted to LTCOL and was CO of the Army Svy Rgt from 1981 to 1982. These are the recollections of Alan Menere (1915 – 2001). Alan grew up in Moonee Ponds, Victoria, and moved to Bendigo while in his early 20s. There he met some like-minded young men who enjoyed challenges and matters mechanical. Flying was the adventure of the time, and they decided to give it a go. There was no intention to be on the leading edge of gliding technology. The challenge was to fly, and by their own efforts. They were aided in this by the embryonic regulatory arrangements covering light aircraft construction and flying, a sense of optimistic can-do, and the cavalier estimation of risks that goes with being in your early 20s. The events described here took place against a darkening political background. Alan and his mates were politically aware, very left wing, and viewed the gathering storm in Europe with apprehension. They could see from early on that war was coming, and it would change everything. Prevented from joining the Air Force by his red-green colour blindness, Alan joined the Army the day after the Pearl Harbour attack. He served in an Armoured Reconnaissance Unit in Western Australia, then with the Army Education Service in New Britain. After the War he joined the Commonwealth Public Service. He moved to Canberra, but his Bendigo habits stayed with him, as he built sailboards and carved propellers, to the admiration of his sons. Alan developed macular degeneration in his mid-60s. He retired to Port Stephens, fishing and socializing when he wasn’t tinkering with wing-sails for his catamaran. As he could touch-type, he quickly learned to use a computer. Very aware that he was the last member of the Bendigo group still alive, he resolved to set down his flying experiences. The images he selected are included, but there are many more from the Bendigo days.A CD entitled "Alan Menere - Recollections of Gliding in Bendigo in the late 1930s". The CD contains 33 documents consisting of one word file, one PDF file (entitled "The Urge to Fly") and the rest are of either photos of the Bendigo Gliding club or generally around Bendigo itself. This set of 30 photographs of the Army Survey Regiment’s Fortuna Villa and surrounding facilities was taken circa 1985. The photos feature much of Fortuna’s exterior and most of the out-buildings spread over the property’s fifteen acres of grounds. After Defence took possession of Fortuna in 1942, the Q-store and engineering workshops were added during the wartime period. Soldiers were accommodated in tents during WW2 for 20 years next to the parade ground before the construction of accommodation buildings in 1962. In 1990 most of the weatherboard buildings in the Q-store area were replaced. A climate-controlled building was also constructed to house a map library and digital data media. This photo set also includes the exterior of Air Survey Squadron’s Building 16 and two modular buildings -16A and 16B that were added in the early 1980s to accommodate map production and technical services.
