She initially trained ...This uniform belonged to Marion Elaine Caffrey, nee Bullock (1920-1993). Marion was born and lived in Begonia Road, Gardenvale and attended Star of the Sea College with her younger twin sisters, Hilary and Margaret Bullock. Their family had been living in the district since 1892 when their grandfather, James Stewart, settled first at Brighton Beach before building a new home in Gardenia Road, Gardenvale in 1910. On leaving school, Marion took a job with the T&G Insurance Company in Collins Street. However, as the threat of invasion by Japan loomed closer following the bombing of Pearl Harbour and the fall of Singapore, in 1943 she volunteered to join Australia's war effort as part of the Women's Royal Australian Naval Service (WRANS). She initially trained as a coder at HMAS Cerberus, followed by a posting to HMAS Magnetic in Townsville. By the time Marion arrived in Townsville in 1944 it was very much a garrison town, inhabited largely by Australian and American servicemen. Whereas in Melbourne the war in the Pacific may have felt somewhat distant, in Townsville it was very immediate. Though the town was never subjected to the heavy bombardments of Darwin, a series of small air strikes in July 1942 had made the fear of air raids quite real. The naval base HMAS Magnetic was responsible for communications, Port Examination Services and servicing of Allied warships. Marion worked as a coder, encoding outgoing transmissions and decoding incoming ones either manually or using a Typex cipher machine. In 1945, she completed additional training to attain the rank of Leading Coder. Her keenness for the work is evident in a note on her service record: although no WRANS women were ever sent to active warzones, Marion volunteered for overseas service. Marion later recalled her time with the WRANS as one of the happiest and most personally fulfilling times of her life. Like many Australian women, she embraced the opportunity to serve her country and take on roles traditionally reserved for men. She completed her three years' service at HMAS Harman in Canberra where she was de-mobbed in 1946. Afterwards, she secured a job with Metro Goldwyn Mayer, where she worked until her marriage to Hugh Caffrey in 1947.Second World War WRANS uniform consisting of a dark navy blue serge blazer (.1), skirt (.2) and hat (.3). The blazer features six buttons. The left arm features a black patch embroidered with a red anchor wrapped in a length of rope (a fouled anchor) with a single red chevron beneath, denoting the rank of Leading Wran (equivalent to Leading Seaman). Later in 1908, Mr. W. Bullock ...This portrait was taken during the visit of Stevenson & McNicoll to Bacchus Marsh September-November 1883. It is probable that they used the silver albumen process. The subject of the portrait is Peter Murray, bootmaker, who set up his business in Bacchus Marsh at 181 Main Street in 1872. In 1889 he added an extension to his dwelling. In later years, Mrs Murray advertised Board and Lodging at "Murri House", in premises adjoining the shop and dwelling. Mr. Murray was active in the local community, and was a Councillor on his death. He was also the local Electoral Registrar. His death may have been hastened as a result of a serious accident in 1893 when he fell heavily and broke his right leg above the ankle, which necessitated the removal of a protruding portion of bone. He was taken by train to the Melbourne Hospital, accompanied by Dr Vance and a number of his neighbours. He made a recovery and in 1904 hosted a meeting of the local Quoit Club. On 14th June 1908 Peter Murray died at his home in Main Street Bacchus Marsh. He had been suffering from Brights disease for about 6 months. He was aged 65 at the time of his death. His first wife had predeceased him. His second wife, Margaret survived him. Later in 1908, Mr. W. Bullock advertised that he had taken over the business of the late Mr. P. Murray. The Melbourne photographers Stevenson & McNicoll visited the Bacchus Marsh district in 1883. They took photographs of many local families and individuals in front of their houses or businesses. More than 50 of these images were preserved by the Hawkins family of Bacchus Marsh and passed to a granddaughter of that family Mrs Beryl Jeremeas who donated those images to the Bacchus Marsh and District Historical Society in 1973. Stevenson & McNicoll are known to have taken numerous studio portrait photographs of Bacchus Marsh people. This was probably the larger part of their work. However very few of these images have been acquired by local historical societies. This image of Peter Murray is the only known example of one of the 1883 studio portraits of Bacchus Marsh residents produced by Stevenson & McNicoll. It is therefore particularly significant as a rare example of their portrait photography in the Bacchus Marsh area and beyond.A sepia coloured photograph on cardboard. Carte de Visite size. She was granted the lease of the ground she needed to establish her eating house at one shilling per year in a shed on the Dalgety's saleyard block. Two established merchants Albert Schlink and John Whan and butcher Jack Garrett agreed to allow her credit which enabled her to open Ronan's Dining Rooms at the Saleyards. It was often a challenging environment, with drovers, and horse- breakers, auctioneers and bushmen bringing huge mobs of cattle and horses to the saleyards. Stories of the premises include the unexpected arrival in the passage of a lively bullock which finished up on the girls' bed. Mrs Ronan persevered and beat all obstacles to finally move from the saleyards to the Wodonga Coffee Palace in High Street, beside the railway gates in 1921. The construction of the Hume Weir had begun and some construction workers boarded at the Coffee Palace. Her 3 children achieved success due to their mother’s hard work to ensure their futures. Trees were sold to more than forty councils and Government organisations in the 1890s, including the Department of Agriculture, Lands Department and Victorian Railways. The need to transport nursery products by train via Ferntree Gully rather than by bullock dray to Narre Warren was a factor in the successful petition to develop what is now known as the Puffing Billy Railway. Railway developments in 1900 included the creation of a siding and Packing Shed, known as Nobelius Station, which is featured in this photograph. The Packing Shed was able to handle 250,000 cases of fruit each year at the height of the nurseries' activities. The image shows the Packing Shed with boarded-up windows, suggesting it was taken prior to the purchase of the facility for use in the Puffing Billy Railway service. Gembrook Nurseries had an indirect influence on the development of other farms and industries in the region. As a wholesale nursery with high sales volumes it was an important employer of local people. Peak season for employees was during the cooler months, during most farmers' off-season. This provided local farmers with a source of income while their own farms were becoming established. The photograph is significant because it depicts infrastructure associated with the Gembrook or Nobelius Nurseries, a business which was instrumental to the development of Emerald as a settlement in the 19th and 20th Centuries and also influenced the development of public and private gardens and the farming of several species in Australia and internationally. The Nobelius Nursery is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register.A coloured rectangular photograph of the Nobelius Nurseries Packing Shed. The photograph was taken in the grounds looking up towards the packing shed. There are various trees and vegetation throughout the grounds and surrounding the packing shed. The Nobelius Nurseries Packing Shed was used to sort and pack trees to be sent overseas during the 1900s-1940s.No inscriptions/marksnobelius nursery, packing shed, 2000s, puffing billy railway, nobelius heritage park -

Gembrook Nurseries were a major employer in the area, shipping fruit and decorative tree species around Australia and internationally. Carramar was the largest private residence in the area with sixteen rooms in addition to staff accommodations. The Nobelus family entertained several famous or important guests there, including Dame Nellie Melba and the Governor of Victoria, Sir Reginald Talbot. The desk set is thought to have been a gift to Carl Axel Nobelius and his wife Emily on the anniversary of their wedding. The Gembrook Nurseries, informally known as the Nobelius Nurseries after the founder Carl Axel Nobelius, began with the purchase of sixty-three acres in 1886 and boomed in the 1890s due to opportunities provided by employment-promoting schemes to develop public parks and gardens and street shade by local and State Governments around Australia. Trees were sold to more than forty councils and Government organisations in the 1890s, including the Department of Agriculture, Lands Department and Victorian Railways. The desk set appears to be in Art Deco style, which suggests that it was in use at Carramar later in Carl Axel Nobelius' life, prior to his death in 1921, as the style became most popular in the years after the First World War. Carramar was the largest private residence in the area with sixteen rooms in addition to staff accommodations. A real estate listing from the sale of Carramar in 1941 indicates that it had five bedrooms, three reception areas, a large billiards room, two bathrooms, rooms for staff use and a separate six-room gardener's cottage as the home sat within extensive gardens. The Nobelus family entertained several famous or important guests there, including Dame Nellie Melba and the Governor of Victoria, Sir Reginald Talbot. The item is significant due to its association with the estate of Carl Axel Nobelius, a horticulturist whose business activities at the Gembrook Nurseries contributed to both the social and infrastructure development of Emerald and surrounds and the distribution of several plant species internationally. The item is a glass plate on small metal legs. Arranged across the surface of the glass plate are a metal rack suitable for holding letters, a square glass bottle with a metal lid sitting in a square metal receptacle which may have been used for ink and two metal brackets suitable for holding a pen. The metal used is silver-toned.carramar, carl axel nobelius, carl axel nobelius, gembrook nurseries, nobelius nursery, writing equipment, desk set, art deco -

The Packing Shed was able to handle 250,000 cases of fruit each year. The photograph is significant because it depicts personnel and infrastructure associated with the Gembrook or Nobelius Nurseries, a business which was instrumental to the development of Emerald as a settlement in the 19th and 20th Centuries and also influenced the development of public and private gardens and the farming of several species in Australia and internationally. The Nobelius Nursery is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register.Black and white rectangular photograph printed on print media paper. The image is captioned 'Lunch Hour at the Packing Shed, Gembrook Nurseries.' It depicts thirty-one men (including one adolescent) and one woman posing for a group photograph behind approximately five large product bales resting in a rectangular metal rail cargo carriage. One of the men has a bandage across one eye. The people depicted are wearing clothing indicating the image may have been taken in the early 20th century. The Packing Shed building (built in 1900) and several stacked wooden storage crates are visible behind the group.Obverse: 59 NOR (?) 10 (?) + / LUNCH HOUR AT THE PACKING SHED, GEMBROOK NURSERIES. /1900s, gembrook nurseries, nobelius nurseries, carl axel nobelius, packing shed, railway, puffing billy railway, nursery employees, farming, agriculture, government initiatives -

They helped develop Australia with a cost-productive way of transporting goods all over the country through different terrains before roads or a train system was in place. As time progressed and transport options became more readily available, the use of bullock teams eventually became obsolete and are now used as exhibition and hobby. Teams consisted of two or more bulls using a draught system that allowed them to pull extremely heavy loads over long distances. While primarily used for goods transport, its noted that early explorers Hume, Hovel and Stuart used bullock teams during their explorations in the 1820s.The black and white photograph of the Beenak bullock team has historical significance as it shows an industry that was incredibly valued for delivery of different trade in very isolated areas, which helped to build a rapidly expanding nation.Black and white rectangular photograph printed on matte photographic paper. The black and white photograph depicts two photos of the Beenak bullock team in the Australian bush hauling cut down trees. In the first of two images, a man can be seen holding a long thin whip to move the bullock team into one direction, with Australian bush and trees in the back and foregrounds. There are two cut trees in the bottom left of the image and several more logs in the top right in the background. In the second of two images, the man can be seen holding a whip and using a rope to lead the cattle of the bullock team to the logs surrounded by tall bush and several large trees in the background.Reverse: Wal Legg /bullock teams, bullock, bush, beenak, logs, horticulture, trade -
