Royal Regiment of Fusiliers cap badge with red and and white feather

This RAAF dress uniform and other associated article of clothing was owned by Walter Alexander Scott. Joined RAF December 1940 to be trained as a pilot, he got his wings December 1941, became a night fighter pilot after OTU and posted to 219 Squadron. Was posted to 603 Squadron December 1942 flying Beaufighters on coastal command convoy escorts, desert patrols, supporting Sicilian and Italian invasions (all from the N.African desert, then on Greek Island " Armed Rovers" until 10 November 1943, just at the end of ops, when he was shot down in the Aegean Sea and became a POW the next day 11 November 1943. Transferred to Germany he was in Stalag IVB for 3 months, before exchanging ID with an Irish soldier ,in order to get out of the main camp into a working sub-camp in order to escape. Post war Walter returned to Australia, he became "Citizen of the Year" in Werribee 1992 for his service to the community. In 1993 he was awarded the Order of Australia Medal for services to youth and to the retired.

Depicts a circlet with "ARGYLL AND SUTHERLAND" inscribed. Cypher with interlaced and reversed "L". On the left of the cypher is a boars head and on right is a wild cat. Above the cypher is a coronet. All within a wreath of thistles. 2. Silver coloured metal cap badge. Design features a Maltese Cross over a laurel wreath and Order of the Garter Star. Battle honours of the regiment inscribed on the four arms of the cross. Centre of the cross has "ARROYO DOS MOLINOS 1811" inscribed. THE BORDER REGIMENT inscribed on a scroll below cross. 3. Silver coloured metal cap badge, design features a castle within a laurel wreath. Above castle is a scroll inscribed "Gibralter". Below the castle is another scroll inscribed "Talavera". 1939 Cap Badge for the "Tramways Superintendent". Made from cast brass to indicate the position held by the wearer on their cap as part of their uniform. Cast in the form of the handwritten or script word/s and underlined. On the rear, silver soldered on are two brass loops at either of the badge to enable the badge to be sewn or fitted with clips onto the cap. Fitted through the loops are brass clips for securing onto a cap. Possibly indicates never been used. On the back of the back of the badge in very small letters is the name of the manufacturer - Stokes & Sons / Melbourne. Note the same manufacturer logo as for the "Tramways Superintendent", Reg. Item 1938. Used by the SEC only? Assumed collected by Les Denmead from spares held by the SEC. 1939.1 - as for 1939, but appears to have been n n ickle plated on the front and then painted with a brownish covering which has partially come away from the plating to give a burnished appearance. Cap or arm Badge for the Electric Supply Co. of Victoria (ESCo) "Conductor" with conductor staff number "17" Made from a manufactured and steel plate, nickel plated to indicate the staff number position held by the wearer as part of their uniform. Letters and number stamped, with horizontal lines. At each side of the badge are vertical holes through which light leather straps have been fixed with button holes to enable securing the badge on an arm. Leather straps black on one side and tan on the other. On the rear, silver soldered on are two loops at each end of the badge to enable badge to be sewn or fitted with clips onto the cap or the uniform. A badge that once belonged to J B McLean, he could have brought it back from World War as a souvenir. From information found online: 'The Royal Dublin Fusiliers was an infantry regiment of the British Army, which recruited in the east of Ireland. Created in 1881 by the amalgamation of two former East India Company regiments, it was disbanded in 1922 on the establishment of the Irish Free State.' These were with other World War 1 memorabilia that has come from Private John Basil McLean, 2nd Reinforcements, 37th Battalion, A.I.F. J.B. McLean (Service No. 13824) was from near Maffra, Victoria and enlisted on 22 January 1916. He embarked on 16 December 1916 for Europe. He spent time with the Australian Field Artillery (Pack Section). At the end of the war he worked for a year at the A.I.F. Headquarters in London before returning to Australia on the 'Ceramic', arriving in Portsea in 1920. His full war record is available from the National Archives of Australia (B2455, MCLEAN JBM).This is an example of souvenir retained by an ex soldier.Royal Dublin Fusiliers Regiment cap badge. Issued to Royal Army Medical Corps soldiers, this cap badge would have been worn by Francis Browne during World War I. Francis James Browne died in Sydney 1963. He had a long career in obstetrics and gynaecology. Summary of appointments include: General Practice in Wales, Maternity Department of the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, 1st director of obstetric unit, University College Hospital London. Retired and continued postgraduate teaching in London and NSW. Married to Grace Cuthbert, who was director of Maternal and Baby Welfare in NSW.
