The ledger is part of the 'Mann' collection and was used for accounting records in the J. Mann & Sons General Store in Wodonga from July 1930 to January 1932. It is one of three bound ledgers from the J. Mann & Sons General Store and the other two date from 1932-1933 and 1933-1934. J. Mann and Sons was first established as a farm produce store in 1921. The range of products was extended in the 1930s and included groceries and hardware, as well as the first petrol bowser in Wodonga outside the store. After WWII, the premises were extended and the range of products continued to increase. In the 1960s the Mann Family opened a new supermarket in Wodonga, in addition to the hardware business, providing steel, plumbing and industrial supplies, and they employed over 100 people at one stage. With changes in the retail industry, the Mann Family sold the main hardware business to Bunnings and the steel and rural produce business to the Kelly brothers in 2006. The ledger has local significance due to its use in the J. Mann & Sons General Store in High St, Wodonga and the association with the prominent Mann family in Wodonga.Bound ledger with a deteriorated light brown leather and green textile cover over thick cardboard. 1. Michael Peter Kelly (1853-1929) was born in Galway, Ireland and came to Australia in 1870. He was a director of many mines and was elected to the Bendigo Stock Exchange in 1882. At one point he was the chairman of the Exchange. He married Margaret Jane Carr in 1887 and they lived at "Norwood", Wills St., Bendigo. 2. Arthur Allsop (1856 - 1921) was a renowned athlete in many fields, including running, lacrosse, cricket, football and lawn bowls. He was an independent bookmaker and was elected to the Bendigo Stock Exchange in 1906. He was also a Past Grand Master of the MUIOOF lodge. After his time in Bendigo, and following the death of his wife in 1914, he moved to Melbourne and then Sydney where he died. The cash book of the Melbourne Legacy Widows' Club from 1984 to 1994. Some of the income mentioned was fundraising at bowls events, the fete, raffles, and selling second hand stamps to stamp dealers. Gwen Gunn was the secretary or treasurer during some of this time and had cash book in her care. It was sent to Melbourne Legacy by Gwen's granddaughter Danni Moore in 2020.A record of the business practices for formal meetings in the 1980s and that Widows' Clubs provided a valuable purpose of meeting for the widows. This ledger contains a list of payments in the estates of insolvents in the Warrnambool area from 1913 to 1930. It comes from the Warrnambool Court of Insolvency. The payments have been made to the Estates Official Assignee. This ledger is of historic interest and provides a useful tool for researchers.This is a ledger of 206 pages with hard green cover with red leather binding and a label on the front cover with black printing. The cover has a red sticker with black numbers and the spine has a blue sticker with numbers. The pages contain printed red lines, black printing and hand written material in blue, black and red ink. The pages contain one loose sheet and are edged with a mottled pattern. This ledger was used by the Shire of Orbost from 1893-1899 . The item was donated to Orbost & District Historical society from P.R.O.V. as a Place of Deposit (POD) item for safe keeping by a local history group or museum. The shire covered an area of 9,347 square kilometres and existed from 1892 until 1994 when it became part of the East Gippsland Shire Council. Orbost was at first included in the Bairnsdale Shire from 1882 and was later part of the Tambo Shire. Because of travelling distances the Croajingalong Shire was created in 1892 (name changed to Orbost Shire 17.2.1893 with James Cameron as the first Shire President. In 1994 it amalgamated to become part of East Gippsland Shire Council This is a handwritten record of the financial transactions of the first Obost Shire Council. The Cash Book was used by the Shire of Bulla Electric Light Department to record by hand writing costs associated with supplying electricity, employee wages and users of electricity between October 1909 and November 1926. The first two generators supplied the township of Sunbury and together with the erection of a Power House were officially opened in 1910. This cash book is one of the earliest administrative books that exist in the Victorian Bands' League historical collection. The earlier years contain records of which bands paid affiliation to the League, and in later years there is detail on what the League spent money on, and how much they received in Government grants. Mentioned throughout the cash book are the names of prominent bandsmen and brass bands. Interestingly in the later pages of the records, for some reason a new page numbering system was used before it reverted back to single pages. Items range from food, cigarettes, clothing, bolts and nails etc. Prior to a store goods were sold by a hawker who travelled from place to place selling goods. Stores gradually multiplied into individual stores focusing on one or two areas of goods. eg. food, clothing, hardware, Now in 2025 goods are mostly bought online and delivered to one's home.This cash book is an example of record keeping and of a general store in the country enabling comparisons to be made with new practices and items required by a country population in the early 1900s.
