Chateau Dore Chateau Tahbilk industry Amy Huxtable grapes ...A newspaper article titled 'A wheel turns full circle. Amy Huxtable looks at the recent rebirth of Bendigo's wine industry.' Wine making was one of the main industries in Bendigo in the 1800s. Mr. Jean T. Deravin of Chateau Dore Vineyard was a skilled vigneron. In 1893 phylloxera was found in some vineyards and all vineyards were needlessly pulled out. A new era in wine making was begun in the 1970s. Mr. Deravin's great grandson Ivan Grose now has grapes back at Chateau Dore. In February 1971 a new era in Bendigo wine making began with grapes grown in Bendigo by Mr. Ron Andrew of Maiden Gully were first released as wine by Chateau Tahbilk and Matchett's. There are two photos in this article - a selection of the Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon released on the 13/02/76 and a photo of Mr. Ron Andrews holding his first vintage. Note in the background behind Mr. Andrews are his historic stables which he restored. 13/02/1976.bendigo, industry, vineyards and wine making., lydia chancellor collection, collection, wine growing, vineyards, bendigo wine making, wine history, history, vintage wines, mr. jean deravin, mr. ron andrews, chateau dore, chateau tahbilk, industry, amy huxtable, grapes, buildings -

It was embedded in the bank of the creek. It's shape is that of a soda bottle but when the cork was taken out, there was definitely wine in it. The trade mark on the bottle looks like Bears Castle from above, and the letter inside the square looks like 'B'. The Bear family were responsible for establishing one of Victoria's earliest wineries (at Yan Yean) and are associated with Chateau Tahbilk, reputedly Victoria's oldest extant winery.Unusual trade mark on bottle and possible link to the historical Bear's Castle, Yan Yean, and it's association with notable pioneering pastoralists, the Bear family.Oval aqua coloured glass bottle, torpedo shape with wide neck, possibly a wine bottle, embossed trade mark 'B', cork inside of the bottleEmbossed with 'Trade Mark' and the letter 'B' inside a squareglass bottle, bottle, wine bottle, yan yean, bears castle -

Photograph - glass plate negative, Bear's Castle, c.1910
... earliest wineries (at Yan Yean) and are associated with Chateau ...Bear's Castle was constructed in Yan Yean circa 1846 probably by two men, Hannaford and Edwards, who had recently arrived separately from Devon, England. It was built for John Bear an early pastoralist who had migrated from England with his family in 1841. Bear's Lookout (or Bear's Folly as it is also known), is a small, two storey structure roughly square in plan and occupying an area of less than 12 square metres. It is built of mud/clay - a common primitive building material apparently used extensively in the Whittlesea area and utilises a technique known as cob, popular in the builders' home town of Devon. Cob is a walling construction method using clay, straw, gravel and sand. The building was constructed to resemble a castle the result, it would seem, of a cursory remark by John Bear with a pyramid shaped roof and turrets at each corner - one with a stair and another in brick and stone with a chimney. Despite its name, it would appear that the building was never used as a retreat from danger although it might well have been used as a lookout for the monitoring of livestock or forest fires. The negative depicts Bear's Castle which is historically significant because of its early, pre- gold rush construction date and its association with notable pioneering pastoralists, the Bear family. The Bears were responsible for establishing one of Victoria's earliest wineries (at Yan Yean) and are associated with Chateau Tahbilk, reputedly Victoria's oldest extant winery.Rectangular glass plate negative showing eight men and a dog standing in front of Bear's Castle at Yan Yeanglass plate negative, bears castle, yan yean
