This area was where many sailing ship coming to Melbourne were wrecked. This was due to the narrow passage through The Rip and the tides at certain times. A Pilot Station was established and ship captains could signal for a Pilot to steer them through The Rip and into Port Philip Bay. Emily Ann Hanson Stitfold was born in Ballarat in 1866 to Thomas Stitfold and Sarah Stitfold (Hanson). There were six children, one boy and five girls. Emily attended photography classes at Ballarat School of Mines in 1896 (Grade !) and 1898. Photography was a new course offered and she was one of the first students to attend. She became a member of the Ballarat Amateur Photographic Association. Emily died in 1948 and is buried in the Ballarat Old Cemetery. (BN Section 19 Grave 9). The Working Men’s College was founded in 1881 by a prominent grazier and philanthropist, The Hon. Francis Ormond, who donated £5000 towards the establishment of the college. The Council of the Melbourne Trades Hall then matched Ormond's initial donation by rallying its members. On 4 June 1887, the college opened in its purpose-built building on the corners of Bowen Street and La Trobe Street in Melbourne, with a gala ceremony. It became the third official provider of higher education in the new Colony of Victoria (the Melbourne Athenaeum was founded in 1839 and the University of Melbourne in 1853). The college was the predecessor to the current-day Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT University). Adjoining the college in the 1890s were the Supreme Court of Victoria (later the Melbourne Magistrates' Court) and the Melbourne Gaol - both which are now part of RMIT today. A list of Scholarship Governors and Life Governors is included. The former have donated 250 Pounds Sterling and upwards, the later have donated 20 Pounds and over but less than 250 Pounds Sterling.
