The Bi Annual Planning Conferences were to plan and coordinate the activities of the Royal Australian Survey Corps. The conferences were chaired by the Director of the Survey Corps and were attended by representatives from all elements of the Corps. This is the handbook for the third annual Victorian Museums & Galleries Conference held in Warrnambool. The conference was run in conjunction with Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village which was celebrating its 40th anniversary. Warrnambool Art Gallery was one of the sponsors of the conference. This handbook is of interest as it tells us of the activities and speakers at a conference which was held in Warrnambool in 2014 and which highlights particularly Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village and the Warrnambool Art Gallery. This is a paper back booklet of 16 pages. It is the Conference Handbook of the Victorian Museums & Galleries Conference 2014 which was held at Warrnambool in April 2014. The pages contain printed material, advertisements, the conference program and information on the conference presenters. These letters are part of communication which took place between Sir Robert Menzies and Mr. G. R. Coulthard, President of the Australian Institute of Dairy Factory Managers and Secretaries Inc. (Victorian Branch) in 1965 and 1966. The Butter Factories’ Managers Association was formed in the 1890s and held its first annual conference in 1893. This organisation became the Australian Dairy Institute and then was incorporated with the Australian Society of Dairy Technology on 24 March 1986 to become the Dairy Industry Association of Australia. Ross Coulthard was a former manager of the Tallangatta dairy factory and later manager of the North Eastern Dairy Company at Kiewa. He had gained experience at several dairies across Victoria and was a qualified Butter Maker, Milk and Cream Grader and Tester and later a Cheesemaker. He took over as manager at Tallangatta in 1954 and later became Manager of the North Eastern Dairy Company at Kiewa after a merger with the Tallangatta Butter Company. He served as Victorian President of the Dairy Industry Association in 1966 and 1976 and was the Australian National President in 1980. These letters are significant because they are linked to Australia's longest serving Prime Minister and the Victorian Dairy Industry.2 letters from Robert G. Menzies and Private Secretary to Mr. G. The photo shows a group of Legatees who attended the 13th Annual Legacy Club Conference held in April 1940 in Launceston. The names are not known. The Legacy conference was held periodically, often annually, and allowed Legatees from across Australia to gather together. The aim of the annual conference was an exchange of ideas and methods of carrying out Legacy functions, and to form general policy for cooperation between clubs and groups. From TROVE. Mercury (Hobart, Tas. : 1860 - 1954), Monday 25 March 1940, page 6 'There are 20 clubs in Australia, and of these seven will be directly represented and another seven by proxy. Delegates from other clubs. Visitors from Melbourne, Sydney, Bendigo, Newcastle, Geelong, and Hobart, together with a strong representation from the Launceston Club will take part in the conference, which will open in the Anzac Hostel Hall on Saturday. Delegates and observers will arrive in Launceston this week to be present at the ceremony of presenting the Charter of Legacy to the Hobart Club on Wednesday evening. The organisation in Hobart has been functioning for many years as the Remembrance Club, but has now accepted the invitation of Legacy to join up, using as its new name "Remembrance Club (Hobart Legacy)." ' The man second from left on the front row is Frank Wittman, who was the smallest man to have enlisted in the 1st AIF and as such the shortest Legatee. Frank Clifford Wittman was only 4ft 4 inches tall (132 cms). From an article in the bulletin when his medals were sold. He served in both world wars.These men were some of the founders and early members of Legacy throughout Australia and had fought in the first World War. The photo shows a group of Legatees who attended the Legacy Club Conference held in Perth in September 1948. The three men at the front are Legatees Stan Savige on left and Bill Perrin in the centre. Other names are not known. Legatee Bill Perrin had been President in 1945 and had just been elected to succeed Legatee Savige as the Chairman of the Co-ordinating Council. A copy of a speech at the Commemorative Service held during the National Conference in Townsville in October 2007. He mentions the battle of Fromelles in WW1. It looks at how lucky Australia was that Legacy was around to look after families of other conflicts. "While we send our young men and women into dangerous situations the chances are that someone will be killed. Then a family will be in darkness, but at least they will know that there is a torch, a Legacy torch, that will help them, via the Legatees, through their difficult times. That torch is not just a light in the darkness it is the light of the human spirit, of mateship. It is a light of hope that helps one go forward." Photos of an RSL Conference where Legacy had a stall of photos explaining their work. The yellow paper captions name a Legatee standing with Legatee Sullivan as being Barry Durkin. Also a photo of Betty C Lawson MBE, Florence Nightingale Medal, FCNA, MID, attending the conference who noticed the book 'We are here, too' in which she has written the foreward. The letters and diaries of Sister Olive Haynes, a nursing sister in WW1 provide a unique look at life at the front. Her son became a Legatee, David Dooley as her married name was Olive Dooley. The date is unknown but probably 1991 the year John Sullivan was president. Photos were in a scrapbook of photos spanning 1983 to 1991.A record that Legacy had a presence at an RSL Conference. These two pencils have been marked with names to serve as advertising items and souvenirs. One is from Zanos’ Elite Café of 80 Liebig Street. This café operated in the 1950s and 60s. The other is from the Jaycee 20th Victorian Zone Conference of 1965 held in Warrnambool. The Warrnambool Junior Chamber of Commerce (Jaycees) was established in the early 1950s to advance business and encourage civic leadership in its members. The Briquette Company was a sponsor of the 1965 Conference.These pencils are of minor interest as examples of advertising techniques used in the second half of the 20th century.
