These photographs, taken by The Advocate in 1991, are of the Victoria Square Shops under construction. During construction, all works stalled for an extended period, leaving the site in a deteriorated and unsightly condition. The prolonged halt caused considerable frustration among nearby residents and local businesses. In 1993 the development was finally completed, and most of the new shop units were taken up by tenants. The key occupant of the development was Australia Post, which relocated from its Main Road West premises on the western side of the railway line to a more central position within the expanding St Albans business district focused around Alfrieda Street and Main Road East.7383.01 - Victoria Square Shops St. Albans Construction Site 1991 Photographs (Advocate 74.2).JPG 7383.02 - Victoria Square Shops St. Albans Construction Site 1991 Photographs (Advocate 74.2).JPG 7383.03 - Victoria Square Shops St. Albans Construction Site 1991 Photographs (Advocate 74.2).JPG 7383.04 - Victoria Square Shops St. Albans Construction Site 1991 Photographs (Advocate 74.2).JPG 7383.05 - Victoria Square Shops St. Albans Construction Site 1991 Photographs (Advocate 74.2).JPGvictoria square, victoria crescent, elaine street, east esplanade, st. albans

In the years of Allan Doney’s photography, landmark buildings succumbed to fire, neglect and redevelopment. He photographed the grey sand hills from Bendigo’s mining past, the streetscapes, poppet heads, miners’ cottages, gracious homes with ornate verandahs, trams and much more. Above all, his photographs show how much of the city has survived from the 19th century – and how much has not. Through two decades of great change, Allan Doney was there to capture ways people interacted with it. Although he travelled to many other places in Northern Victoria and beyond in search of subjects for his art, he seemed to always return to Bendigo for inspiration.
