This is a photograph of CAPT Jack Cullen (Ret) and an unidentified person besides the front steps of Fortuna Villa, Bendigo, c1978. Jack Cullen served for many years in the Royal Australian Survey Corps from 1920 to 1952, after active service with the AIF in WW1. His service at Fortuna began in 1944 when he was a Lieutenant in charge of a map compilation section. Sir Gilbert Joseph Cullen Dyett (1891-1964) was born in Bendigo, at the age of 14 he started working for J H Curnow Real Estate and Auction rooms. In March 1915 he was commissioned as Lieutenant in the 7th Battalion and was badly wounded at Lone Pine, Gallipoli. After the war he was prominent in many organizations including Anzac Remembrance Appeal, Ocean Road Trust, Returned Services League, Australian War Memorial, Racecourse Licences Board of Victoria, Victoria Trotting and Racing Association (which was largely controlled by John Wren) He was caricatured as Captain Dwyer by Frank Hardy in his novel Power without Glory. HE was Knighted in 1934. Died in Fitzroy in1964 and is buried in Bendigo. Ref. The postcard shows St Vincent's Hospital, on the northern side of Victoria Parade, Fitzroy, circa 1914. At left is the original hospital building, a converted terrace house, alongside the first purpose-built wing opened 1905 and the Cullen Wing (with facilities for medical students and residents) on the right. A group of two men and three boys stands on the footpath outside the Cullen Wing and a car is parked outside the main hospital building in the centre of the photograph.
