The photograph is dated to between 1927 and 1932, as the Nelson house has been renovated (this happened in 1927). Dan Cornish sold his shoe shop in 1932 (it became Murrell's newsagency). Black and white image which shows buildings in Sussex Street, Linton. The building in the foreground, the Linton Public Library, has a car parked in front of it. Other buildings are the house owned by the Nelson family, the Railway Hotel, Dan Cornish's shoe shop and the weighbridge. A gas lamp is attached to the verandah of the library building. From the early 'Index of Photographs' held at LDHS: "This tiny cottage, more like a dolls house, now stands behind Murrells newsagency in Linton. It stood at one time down near the entrance to the Recreation Reserve but was moved up to its present site when Dan Cornish carried on his boot and shoe store and repairs. Murrells later purchased the premises." Certificate of Title for 75 Sussex Street shows that Dan Cornish became the proprietor of this property in 1890. Some doubt about whether this is a photograph of an Old Lintonians' Association reunion. An identical photograph in the collection (Registration no. 242) is said to be of the Methodist Church jubilee celebration in 1910.(OLA reunions did not start until 1914.) William Murrell ran a newspaper shop on the west side of Sussex Street until 1932, when he moved his business to a site formerly occupied by Dan Cornish (who ran it as a shoe shop). Photograph is dated to 1930s as G. G. Bennett is shown trading at the store formerly owned by Joseph Shepherd/Alf Darling. Carrie Rogers Murrell, b.1905 at Daylesford, was a daughter of William Murrell and his wife Lily, née Clarke/Young. She was a grand-daughter of Ambrose and Mary Murrell. Carrie Murrell attended Linton State School, completing Grade 8 in 1n 1918. She then assisted her father in the Linton newsagency, before taking over as its manager, a role she enjoyed for some seventy years. In 1932 she moved the business from its site on the west side of Sussex Street to the east side, into a shop next to the Railway Hotel that had previously been run as a shoe shop by Dan Cornish. This shop remained as the Linton Newsagency until Carrie retired. It is now used as a private residence. Buildings shown on west side of Sussex Street: Criterion House, at the time occupied by Murrell's Newsagency, the Grenville Shire civic hall and offices, the shop at one time occupied by J. Y. Clarke, barber & tobacconist. The roof of Barr's shop and dwelling can be seen (the building itself is obscured by a tree), and houses further along the street owned by J.G. Allan, Ernest Ball and Oscar Ball. The Royal Standard Hotel appears to have been demolished. On the east side of the street, the roof and signage of the Railway Hotel is visible, and the roof of Cornish's shoe shop. The photograph is undated but was probably taken in between the late 1920s (when the Royal Standard Hotel was demolished) and 1932, when the Murrell family moved its newsagency into the building on the other side of the street previously occupied by Dan Cornish. Note: a gap between the Shire Hall and the next building suggests that the shop and dwelling originally occupied by the Austin family has been demolished.Black and white copy of original photograph which has been mounted on blue card.
