Dan Cornish...Dan Cornish died in March 1932, and the property was purchased in July that year by William Murrell....Dan Cornish died in March 1932, and the property was purchased in July that year by William Murrell. ...From the early 'Index of Photographs' held at LDHS: "This tiny cottage, more like a dolls house, now stands behind Murrells newsagency in Linton. It stood at one time down near the entrance to the Recreation Reserve but was moved up to its present site when Dan Cornish carried on his boot and shoe store and repairs. Murrells later purchased the premises." Certificate of Title for 75 Sussex Street shows that Dan Cornish became the proprietor of this property in 1890. Dan Cornish died in March 1932, and the property was purchased in July that year by William Murrell.Black and white copy of original photograph of a very small house with lattice around the verandah, and with hanging baskets and flowery garden beds in the front. The date of the photograph is unknown. This shop remained as the Linton Newsagency until Carrie retired. ...Carrie Rogers Murrell, b.1905 at Daylesford, was a daughter of William Murrell and his wife Lily, née Clarke/Young. She was a grand-daughter of Ambrose and Mary Murrell. Carrie Murrell attended Linton State School, completing Grade 8 in 1n 1918. She then assisted her father in the Linton newsagency, before taking over as its manager, a role she enjoyed for some seventy years. In 1932 she moved the business from its site on the west side of Sussex Street to the east side, into a shop next to the Railway Hotel that had previously been run as a shoe shop by Dan Cornish. This shop remained as the Linton Newsagency until Carrie retired. It is now used as a private residence. Note: a gap between the Shire Hall and the next building suggests that the shop and dwelling originally occupied by the Austin family has been demolished....The photograph is undated but was probably taken in between the late 1920s (when the Royal Standard Hotel was demolished) and 1932, when the Murrell family moved its newsagency into the building on the other side of the street previously occupied by Dan Cornish. Note: a gap between the Shire Hall and the next building suggests that the shop and dwelling originally occupied by the Austin family has been demolished. ...Buildings shown on west side of Sussex Street: Criterion House, at the time occupied by Murrell's Newsagency, the Grenville Shire civic hall and offices, the shop at one time occupied by J. Y. Clarke, barber & tobacconist. The roof of Barr's shop and dwelling can be seen (the building itself is obscured by a tree), and houses further along the street owned by J.G. Allan, Ernest Ball and Oscar Ball. The Royal Standard Hotel appears to have been demolished. On the east side of the street, the roof and signage of the Railway Hotel is visible, and the roof of Cornish's shoe shop. The photograph is undated but was probably taken in between the late 1920s (when the Royal Standard Hotel was demolished) and 1932, when the Murrell family moved its newsagency into the building on the other side of the street previously occupied by Dan Cornish.
