SEC Tram 17 and a former bus used as a food vendor stand, that has finished up in the front of S.E. Dickins Pty Ltd. (Grocers) store 1/10/1949. The tram derailed at the intersection of Sturt and Grenville St. collided with the bus and pushed it into the front of the store. Many people standing around the incident, including two trammies in front of the tram. Thought to be a Ballarat Courier Photograph. Wal Jack's caption advises the Bedford van was a doughnut kitchen. 1020.1 - added 3/06/2006 - small newspaper cutting with the same photo and a caption "While the driver was picking up lunch at Ashkar's pie shop, his tram ploughed into Dickin's grocery, on the present site of Norwich Plaza". Born in Melbourne in 1952, Stella began work in 1970 as a Trainee Commercial Artist with Kodak (Australia) Pty. Ltd., in Coburg. He completed a Diploma of Art at Phillip Institute of Technology in 1978, and after a few more years working as a Graphic Designer, completed a Graduate Diploma of Education at Melbourne University in 1985. Over the years, Nick has maintained a constant interest in the Visual Arts, completing many sculptures, paintings and printed works. He retired from full-time teaching at the end of 2013, to concentrate on life and making art.

This interesting photograph shows how a presently unprepossesing corner of Ballarat once looked. Also included is the Buck's Head hotel at the extreme right, which closed in 1960 and was demolished. The Morshead's department store windows were famous for their displays. Mrs Bon Strange and her husband Bert were well known Ballarat residents. S.E. Dickins was one of Victoria’s most important early self‑service grocery chains, founded in 1920 by former Moran & Cato manager Samuel Edward Dickins. It grew from a single Geelong store into a 54‑store Victorian network before being taken over by Coles in 1958 (Australian Food Timeline). After the Coles take over, some stores were rebranded Coles New World, whereas others kept the Dickins name for several years. In 1991, the New World name was phased, and all stores were rebranded simply as Coles Supermarkets. This store was subsequently rebranded as Bi-Lo Supermarket which was also part of the Coles Group. One of a group of slides taken by Mrs C Dickins, the mother of Joy Stewart, of built heritage in Kew. 35mm colour transparency (slide) of a rendered brick commercial building at 6 Walpole Street, Kew, taken in 1980 (now demolished). The double-fronted, two-storey building has a street frontage. Behind the formal rendered front, there is a wooden rear section then an extensive building with a pitched roof made of what appears to be galvanised iron sheeting. The ground floor facing Walpole Street includes a window and door on the left and a wide opening on the right to allow vehicular access; and earlier access by horses and carts when it was a livery stable. The second floor has two sash windows. Painted advertising signage includes: Brown's Office Cleaning Service, and Coakley Motors which would indicate the probable tenancy of the building at this or an earlier period. The building was located across the street from the (former) Kew Library and (former) Kew Town Hall.
