An example of a bookmark that is handmade in a convent. The message is that the recipient have a happy feastday. A reminder of when religious in the Catholic church took the name of a saint as their patron and the feast-day of that saint was celebrated annually as a birthday being the recipients birthday into the order. When a person entered a Catholic religious order prior to the Second Vatican Council they adopted a saint's name and celebrated that saint's feast-day as their birthday into the order. The 'Cycles' series is an extension of two large scale provisional installations '150 Rotations', Melbourne Now, National Gallery of Victoria, and '356 Rotations', AC Institute in New York, which also re-purposed and aestheticised multiple paper units into hundreds of circular motifs.The immediate tactile connection with the material excesses and detritus of contemporary consumer culture informs the theoretical framework and conceptual understanding of Gower's practice, and associates her work with ideas of recovery and re-purpose, sustainable practice and thrift strategies that critique excesses of mass production and the notion of impermanence. Methodist societies and churches issued quarterly tickets (or class tickets or love feast tickets) as a way to identify members of good standing in the society or church. Tickets also became a way of offering admission to the love feast, or Agape, which was a service around a shared meal, but distinct from the Lord’s Supper. Quarterly tickets typically included the member’s name, the minister’s name, the date, as well as a Scriptural text. The practice of issuing quarterly tickets began in the mid-eighteenth century with John Wesley and continued in many Methodist organizations throughout the nineteenth century. In 1887 the Tarnagulla Borough Council, along with many other municipalities throughout Australia, celebrated Queen Victoria's Jubilee in great style, with a street parade and a feast at the Recreation Reserve.
