... Ford Motor Company...Ford. Indicative of technological experimentation in the sport of gliding australian gliding glider sailplane auto-tug pawnee tug auto engine motor ford gliding federation of australia burns sharples. Ford auto engine mounted on mobile stand Machine Auto-Tug Engine Ford Motor Company ...The 1982 Ford V6 engine, built at the Ford Essex Engine Plant at Windsor in Ontario Canada, was released by Ford for installation in a number of car and light truck models manufactured in Canada, United States, Mexico and Venezula. Production probably exceeded 7 million items. The Australian Gliding Museum’s exhibit was an engine converted for aircraft use that was bought for the Gliding Federation of Australia “Auto-Tug” program from Javelin Aircraft Company in Wichita in USA. “Auto-Tug” was an experimental program sponsored by the Gliding Federation of Australia to equip a glider – sailplane Piper Pawnee PA-25-150 tug with a water-cooled engine to alleviate the costs of running and maintaining the Lycoming engines fitted to Pawnee tugs in Australia. The program began in 1988 and was aimed at obtaining limited certification for converting dedicated glider – sailplane tow planes. The engine equipped with modified intake manifolds produced 198 hp for flight with the same propeller RPM for take-off as the original Lycoming 0-540 engine. However, fuel consumption was halved as the water cooling of the Ford engine enabled quicker descents with throttle closed following the release of the sailplane. Based on the results of GFA’s program, CASA concluded that engine was quite suitable for an aircraft installation and rated it more reliable than the equivalent Lycoming and Continental aircraft engine. The use of the 1982 Ford V6 engine type for Pawnee tug conversions was discontinued when the General Motors LS1 5.7 litre V8 became available. It is understood that a small number of conversions have been done using the LS1 engine. This brief history is based on information obtained from Mike Burns and David Sharples who were involved in the Auto-Tug program from 1988 to 1992. Technical information relating to the 1982 Ford V6 automotive engine is contained in a paper by D.L. Armstrong and G.F. Stirrat of the Engine Engineering Office at Ford. ... ...Ford Motor Company...It is not known which farm in the Emerald area purchased and used the machine. 1890s 1900s 1910s Chicago Flexible Shaft Co Chicago Flexible Shaft Company agricultural equipment farm and equipment farm tools horses John K Stewart Terrence O'Brien Junior Thomas J Clark Thomas Conlon Ford Motor Company Ford Model T speedometer sunbeam Top: THE / STEWART / CHICAGO / BALL BEARING / No. 1 / CLIPPER / MADE BY / CHICAGO / FLEXIBLE / SHAFT CO / CHICAGO USA / PATENTED BY / U.S.A., ENGLAND / AUSTRALIA / NEW ZEALAND / CANADA / CUBA / ETC Right side: STEWART / CLIPPER / MADE / BY / CHICAGO FLEXIBLE SHAFT CO / The item consists of a small metal case, which may house a ball bearing mechanism, powered by a wooden handled metal crank to the right side of the case. ...The Chicago Flexible Shaft Company was established in Chicago, Illinois, in 1893. Horses were integral to both the agricultural and transport sectors at the time so hand-cranked clippers that reduced the time to remove the excess winter coat of working horses and other large animals (including sheep) that previously needed to be trimmed with hand shears to a job that could be completed in less than twenty minutes was a considerable advancement. This model, the Number 1, was actually the second iteration of the company's hand-cranked devices; it was smaller and lighter to transport and cheaper for farmers to purchase and therefore had a bigger impact on overall agricultural practices than the company's first, pioneering, 'Chicago Clipper'. This item is the stand and power-generation unit of the machine. An attachment on the left-hand side of the item shows where a long, flexible 'shaft' ending in sharp clippers could be attached to the crank unit and powered by manually turning the crank handle. The clippers could then be used to easily remove long hair from animals such as horses, whose winter coats could interfere with their ability to wear a harness or hold sweat which would be uncomfortable for the horse when it dried. The inventors who founded the Chicago Flexible Shaft Company, John K. Stewart (born Terrence O'Brien Junior) and Thomas J. Clark (born Thomas Conlon), went on to design the speedometer used in the Ford Model T car. After Stewart sold his shares in the Chicago Flexible Shaft Company to focus on developing the speedometer concept, the company changed direction to focus on domestic appliances - including clippers for human hair - and rebranded as Sunbeam, a brand still in use today. This item is significant as an example of agricultural technology in use in the Emerald area in the early Twentieth Century. The particular make and model of clipper represented a considerable technological advance as it was significantly smaller in size and easier to operate than previous models from the same company. This smaller size meant it had a much bigger impact on farming processes internationally as it was easier to transport and more affordable for farmers to purchase. It is not known which farm in the Emerald area purchased and used the machine. The item consists of a small metal case, which may house a ball bearing mechanism, powered by a wooden handled metal crank to the right side of the case. A metal handle is provided at the rear. An outlet for a cord is present on the left hand side of the unit. The unit stands on an attached tripod to raise it to working height. The item is the brown of rusted metal all over, though it can be seen that the rear handle was originally red and the wooden handle black, in distinction to the possible original chrome colour of the unit overall.Top: THE / STEWART / CHICAGO / BALL BEARING / No. 1 / CLIPPER / MADE BY / CHICAGO / FLEXIBLE / SHAFT CO / CHICAGO USA / PATENTED BY / U.S.A., ENGLAND / AUSTRALIA / NEW ZEALAND / CANADA / CUBA / ETC Right side: STEWART / CLIPPER / MADE / BY / CHICAGO FLEXIBLE SHAFT CO /1890s, 1900s, 1910s, chicago flexible shaft co, chicago flexible shaft company, agricultural equipment, farm and equipment, farm tools, horses, john k stewart, terrence o'brien junior, thomas j clark, thomas conlon, ford motor company, ford model t, speedometer, sunbeam -

Grace, Clyde-Hancock and numerous transport and food production enterprises. ...The document reflects the social, economic and demographic characteristics of the City of Broadmeadows during a period of significant industrial activity and population growth. Manufacturing remained the dominant employment sector, with major employers including Ford Motor Company, W.R. Grace, Clyde-Hancock and numerous transport and food production enterprises. The report also documents migration patterns, public housing development and community infrastructure during a period when Broadmeadows was one of Melbourne's principal industrial municipalities. This report is significant for its documentation of the demographic, social and economic characteristics of the City of Broadmeadows during the early to mid-1980s. It provides a contemporary snapshot of one of Australia's major manufacturing municipalities and records information on population growth, migration, housing and employment patterns during a period of substantial change. (Exhibit at Birmingham Thinktank museum) 1933 Burman and Sons Limited, manufacturers of horse and barbers' clippers, sheep shearers, motor ...Hair clippers are specialized implements used to cut human head hair. They work on the same principle as scissors, but are distinct from scissors and razors. :Hair clippers comprise a pair of sharpened comb-like blades in close contact one above the other which slide sideways relative to each other, a mechanism which may be manual or electrical to make the blades oscillate from side to side, and a handle. The clipper is moved so that hair is positioned between the teeth of the comb, and cut with a scissor action when one blade slides sideways relative to the other. Friction between the blades needs to be as low as possible, which is attained by choice of material and finish, and frequent lubrication. Hair clippers are operated by a pair of handles that are alternately squeezed together and released. Barbers used them to cut hair close and fast. The hair was picked up in locks and the head was rapidly depilated. Mid 20thC such haircuts became popular among boys, and young men in the military and in prisons. Burman & Sons Ltd, of Ryland Road, Birmingham, West Midlands, manufactured Burman-Douglas steering gear. Their recirculating worm and ball design of steering gear was fitted to pre-war vehicles such as the Ford Eight and the Ford Prefect, the Bedford CA, plus heavy trucks and off-road vehicles - both pre and post-war. The Model C was released in Australia in 1935 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Model_C_Ten This glass plate negative was used to manufacture postcards (1:1 printing) for commercial sale by the Rose Sterograph Company and its subsidiaries. George Rose founded the Rose Stereograph Company in 1880 and was joined by Herbert (Bert) Cutts in the early 20th Century. The pair formed a lifetime working partnership and strong personal friendship. Assisted by George’s two sons, Herbert George and Walter, and later by Neil Cutts, the Rose Stereograph Company continued its operations for more than 140 years. The company was initially built on stereographs, but as cinema took over and stereographs fell out of fashion, the Rose Stereograph Company developed Australia’s first commercially viable photographic postcard business. Specialising in postcards of iconic historical moments and significant landmarks, The Rose Stereograph Company became a staple of the Australian travel industry. This remarkable collection of glass plate negatives, transparencies, and postcards – arguably Australia’s most significant photography collection outside of public hands – has been passed down through the generations, surviving war, relocation, and the harsh Victorian climate. The historic Rose Stereograph collection is the culmination of George Rose’s dream of capturing and preserving precious moments in time and remains the legacy of the Rose and Cutts families. It is with great sadness that the Cutts family says goodbye to a collection that spans five generations and 140 years. The Cutts family understands that for these historically important pieces to rest with one family is to deny others the pleasure of their custodianship.Glass Plate Negative Size: 9 x 13.9 cmThe Bridge, Eltham, Valentine Series No. 3196, Copyrightpeter and elizabeth pidgeon collection, bridge, cars, diamond creek (creek), eltham, eltham south, ford model c ten, glass plate negative, main road, main road bridge, motor vehicles, postcard, rose stereograph, rose stereograph company, valentine series postcard -
