Thought to have originated in Austria in 1869, postcards first gained popularity in Australia in the 1890s.They were used to send short messages to friends and family. This collection was generated by Mary Emma Elliot of Talgarno. Talgarno is a rural locality in Victoria, Australia, situated on the southern shoreline of Lake Hume, about 23 km east of Albury-Wodonga. The collection contains postcards from across the world. Mary Emma Sibley was born in Ironbark, Bendigo in 1859. She married James Elliot in 1893 and they settled at “Kelso”, Talgarno. They had two children – Mona and Sibley. Mary Emma Elliot died in Melbourne in 1944, aged 84 years. This album contains photographs of many local and beach scenes such as view over Warrnambool, Botanic Gardens, Hopkins River and Bridge, Warrnambool railway station, Proudfoots, Thunder Point, Christ Church and the War Memorial. There are a couple of photographs of groups of people picnicking on the main beach. The newspaper cutting showing firemen dousing the last of the flames of the fire has onlookers including four children in the foreground. The Ozone Coffee Palace was built in 1890-1891 and burnt down February23, 1929. It was one of the largest fires in Warrnambool It was designed by Mr J McLeod. It was grand in design and decoration. The term Coffee Palace was used to describe temperance hotels which were built during the 1880’s -1890’s. They typically were multi-purpose and had a large number of rooms for ballrooms and leisure activities. Coffee palaces were aimed at families in coastal areas and inner city locations. Examples of some are The Windsor Hotel Melbourne, Ozone, Queenscliff and Kilbreda Convent in Mentone. This album has social and historical significance as it shows a collection of local scenes which is a record of familiar scenes such as the gardens, Hopkins River and beach scenes. The groups of people are unknown but the images provide a snapshot of customs and costumes of the early 1920’s.Khaki coloured soft card tied with a dark green cord which has broken and has been replaced with yellow string. There is an embossing of a lion/dragon on front cover with ribbons. 20 pages with photographs glued to most. The Bridge Hotel was built by Henry Hopwood to house visitors to the town crossing the Murray River on his punt crossing, which was situated just below the Bridge Hotel on the Murray River. The accommodation was spacious and grand! In the right back corner of the photograph, the 'lantern' roof of the St Georges Hall can be seen. The street is level with the front entrance to the Hotel, which is very different to what it is today.The photograph shows hotel activities and accommodation in the late 19th Century.A black and white photograph of the Bridge Hotel taken from the Hopwood Gardens. These coasters depict scenes from Warrnambool – the Botanic Gardens, The Hopkins River mouth and the Wollaston Bridge. All are areas of historical and tourist interest. The coaster were produced to raise funds for Peters Project in Warrnambool, a charity organization dedicated to bringing improved cancer care services to Warrnambool. The organization was founded in 2008 by Vicki Jellie in memory of her husband Peter who died of cancer. The major aim of the organization was realized in 2016 when the South West Regional Cancer Care Centre was opened in a new building in Ryot Street and services to assist cancer patients in Warrnambool continue to be extended. Rare postcard showing view looking down Bridge Street with the Eltham Obelisk in situ in its original location. The Obelisk War Memorial was unveiled 3 August 1919. Subsequent to the unveiling provision was made of a stone retaining wall topped with a chain link and granite stone boundary. Along with the use of the name Obelisk Corner, the Bridge Street bridge was also known as Obelisk Bridge. The Obelisk was relocated to the fornt garden of the Eltham RSL sub-branch in the mid 1950s as a result of road widening and corner improvements. Shire of Eltham Archives: Series 69, Item 4 This video was produced for the Shire of Eltham by IMP Productions and provides a description of the shire, 277 square km on a north/northeast axis, some 25 km northeast of the centre of Melbourne with a population of around 40,000. Also the Living and Learning Centre, St Andrews Markets and other local markets, the Eltham Leisure Centre, cricket and horse riding at Eltham Lower Park, the Infant Welfare Centre (part of the Eltham War Memorial), how residents are mindful of protecting their historical heritage, the CBA bank and Allwood House at Hurstbridge, Tracey Naughton about the Eltham "As we are" Community Banner project and the “River of Life banner”, the Parks and Gardens office in the former Police Residence building (now the Local History Centre), Alistair Knox Park, road planning and types of roads, tree canopy, Peck's Dam, green carparks, road drainage, Gordon Ford's garden and natural landscapes, and Were Street shops in Montmorency. Planning for shopping facilities and carparks with a population of 40,000 growing to 55,000, Arthur Street Mall and carpark, local village feel in the shopping centre. The obelisk was originally dedicate to those that fell in the First World War and was dedicated in 1919. It was located on the corner of Bridge Street and Main Road. With road works undertaken in the 1950s, the obelisk was relocated to the front Garden of Remembrance at the Eltham RSL Sub-Branch diagonally across Main Road from its original location. When the Eltham RSL collapsed due to financial problems, the property was sold in 2010 and arrangements were made to relocate the obelisk again, this time in front of the Memorial Garden at the Eltham War Memorial opposite Arthur Street.Colour photo print 15 x 10 cmeltham rsl sub branch, eltham rsl sub-branch, garden of remembrance, honour roll, main road, obelisk
