The Bendigo Easter Fair was established in 1871 to fundraise for the Bendigo Hospital and the Bendigo Benevolent Asylum. Donated by the Sadner family who were associated with the Bendigo Hospital, these family snap shots capture the regalia and atmosphere that the Chinese community bring to this community event. Joachim Streger was born in Wedel, Germany, in 1827 and came to Australia in 1855. After landing in Adelaide he travelled cross-country to Bendigo. He was robbed of everything when he was held up by bushrangers at Big Hill. Following this he was supported by his friends, the Kahlands, who had arrived in Bendigo two years before from the same German village. He set up puddling machines in King Street, Garsed St.,Myrtle St and Quarry Hill. He also became a carpenter and builder.
