Y2K / the year 2000 / The millennium bug / was commonly used to refer to a widespread computer programming shortcut that was expected to cause extensive havoc as the year changed from 1999 to 2000. Instead of allowing four digits for the year, many computer programs only allowed two digits (e.g., 99 instead of 1999). As a result, there was immense panic that computers would be unable to operate at the turn of the millennium when the date descended from "99" to "00". The Bug presented a formidable challenge to the problem-solving skills of local government officials. Lacking a cure-all that will work for every municipality, local officials must develop their own solutions to meet their community's unique needs. Sandhurst Trustees Bendigo Easter Festival. The aim of The Bendigo Easter Festival is to increase awareness of, and attendance at the Bendigo Easter Festival amongst regional, intrastate, and interstate audiences by 2006. Bendigo Easter Festival - Australia's oldest festival ... .... .. Gold, gold, gold. The year of 1871 was a great year for Bendigo. Parks were laid out, trees lined the streets. Although acknowledged as starting in 1869 the Easter Festival was considered an annual event by 1871. Under brilliant illumination the whole of the Camp Reserve (now Rosalind Park) was filled with a bewildering variety of groups, exhibits and individuals all eager to be involved in such a worthwhile cause. There were sports meetings, theatricals, bazaars and instrumental items as well as dancing and carnival rides. On Easter Monday, as it is today, there was a grand procession that included a variety of bands. 1871 also marked the first year that the Chinese joined in the festivities. Originally the Chinese participated in the procession by dressing in richly embroidered costumes, and carrying colourful banners in all shapes and sizes, which were specially made for them in China. In 1889, the Chinese were given their traditional place in the Parade, the end. They created a wonderful spectacle with their colourful costumes, banners and flags, and in 1892, Loong, the dragon appeared. The Bendigo Easter Festival had been fortunate in that it bad such a lively Chinese community in its midst. At the time of course, Bendigo was known as Sandhurst, and it was not until twenty years after the first Easter Festival that the town was known as Bendigo. These days with sponsorship from the Sandburst Trustees, the Festival is known as the Sandhurst Trustees Bendigo Easter Festival. 132 years later, the Sandburst Trustees Bendigo Easter Festival has had many changes. But loyal followers have never been disappointed. This year people saw the traditions upheld with family entertainments and not Loong, but Sun Loong, meaning new dragon, a 100m long Imperial Dragon who was created to take the place of the aging Loong. When the SMI was opened in Nov 1921 the Bendigo RSL Sub - Branch had occupancy from that day on. The Building became a Museum opened to the public in 1998 by the RSL. The origins of this project goes back to 20.10.2011 with a letter to the City of Greater Bendigo of the possibility of an upgrade to the SMI from the Bendigo District RSL Sub - Branch Inc. Some renovations separate had already taken place and some structural work. After initial talks and planning a final sub - committee of 3 persons from the RSL was elected to work with the Council along with other bodies who would be involved. Plans eventuated by 2015 and were put to the RSL for approval. From there the fund raising began from the State/Federal Govt's, RSL, the Public and Council itself. This was achieved and finally in Sept 2016 the SMI/Museum was packed up completely and the Renovations began in 2017. Souvenir program, card yellow colour folding, front page is in gold and black writing with an image of the Dome on the SMI followed by in gold, "Bendigo Soldiers Memorial Institute Revitalisation Project" then in gold, "Souvenir Program", in the centre has details re time, date, place. At the bottom are the logo's of the Federal & State Governments, RSL and City of Greater Bendigo Page 2 is titled "About the Bendigo Soldiers Memorial Institute" with a photo showing the "Hustlers Royal Reserve Mine No 2" which was on the site where the SMI now stands. Page 3 has details of the program, music, Official welcome, speakers, ribbon cutting, the ODE, Last Post, National Anthem, close of formalities and light refreshments. The Memorial Walls & Walkway came about as part of the Re Developement of the Forecourt of the Soldiers Memorial Institute (Bendigo Military Museum) and completed in 2008.There was a Wall on the north and south side of the building. Discussions re some sort of Memorial(s) had gone on for several years with a number of plans and ideas being put forward. A final Sub Committee was appointed in April 2010 of 4 people being Richards, Ball, Poustie and Harding. The first meeting was on May 20th with one apology and Ball chairing and over 3 hours a final plan was put together from all the previous plans and ideas. On the 21st measurements and photos were taken to draw up the final recommendations to Committee BDRSL. The recommendations in brief were: Five central plaques on the north wall with Unit/Association/Conflict/Service based plaques placed equally out on each side of the five central. On both the north & south walls at one end would be the lettering in large brass “Lest We Forget”. Application for a plaque would be via a form, all plaques the same size and no individual names on. The folder holds the minutes of the meeting and plans that would go to BDRSL for approval. A briefer version that would go to the Members of BDRSL for final approval. Two more copies used on the day. The application form. One page with initial plaque costs. Three pages with 6 photos per page showing the time line re placement of the plaques. Brief time line. April 2010. Final Sub Committee formed. May 20/21st. First meeting of the Sub Committee. May 24th.Plans approved by Committee BDRSL June 21st. Plans approved by Members of BDSL. June 23rd. Letters/forms go out to Associations,some 10 were eligible City of Greater Bendigo Council approves plans. Sept 2010. Ball & Poustie to now carry out the process. April 2011. Over 3 days the 5 main plaques and 5 Association plaques are placed. April 2011. Over 2 days the Lettering “Lest We Forget” is placed. 11.11.2011. The walls are dedicated. 2013 - 2025. Seven more plaques placed with last being so far on 27.3.2025. The Walls remained equal each side of the Main 5 central until the Redevelopment of the Soldiers Memorial Institute and Museum in 2016 - 18 with the RH end plaque being removed for steps to be placed. The Bendigo Gas Works are one of around three remaining intact 19th century gas works in the world, and the only one in Australia. It is on the Victorian Heritage Register and regarded by Institution of Engineers Australia as an internationally significant example of an entire provincial gasworks The Bendigo Gasworks operated from 1860 until 1973 when natural gas was introduced and remain as they were at the time of closure; a treasure of industrial heritage frozen in time. It is an internationally significant example of an entire provincial gasworks. It has the only horizontal gas-producing retorts in Australia. Coal Gas was manufactured here from 1860 and operated continuously until the introduction of natural gas in 1973. The works were operated by the Bendigo Gas Company until purchased by the Gas and Fuel Corporation in 1958 at which time they were supplying 3,500 consumers. During the Second World War the works were expanded by the Ministry of Munitions to serve the Bendigo Ordinance Factory. The original works were constructed during 1859-1860 under the direction of engineer Alexander Kennedy Smith (1824 - 1881) and developed in a period of growth by W. A. Simco, General Manager 1922-1939. The Department of Defence is considering opening Fortuna Villa for public inspection before vacating the property, likely in September or October, as part of community consultation. The City of Greater Bendigo and the Brumby Government will have the first opportunity to bid on the property before it is offered on the open market.
