The Shire of Grenville was proclaimed in 1864. The Shire offices and hall are believed to have been completed by the mid 1860s. Part of S E Surman collection (album) page 26 top left. The Shire of Grenville built the Shire Offices and Hall in the mid 1860s. The building comprised a Council Chamber on the ground floor, and upstairs a large hall with a stage; this room was used for meetings, balls, concerts and other entertainments. This building was replaced with a single-storey building in 1939. The photograph is believed to have been taken in 1871 after completion of the fence. The community hall, originally a shearing shed, was donated to the RSL in the 1950's. Moved from Bill Lewers property 'Hoyles Creek' to Clyde St, Linton. When the RSL closed in 1982 the hall was bought by Grenville Shire council for use as a community hall. The hall was demolished in December 1996 when the Multi Purpose Hall at Linton Rec. Samuel Lewers was the first manager of the Bank of New South Wales in Linton, from around 1860 until he retired. Samuel Lewers was the first chairman of the Woady Yaloak Roads Board, first president of its successor the Grenville Shire Council, and a Justice of the Peace who presided at the Linton Court House on a regular basis. The Linton library initially operated under the auspices of the Linton Mechanics' Institute, from around 1871. The library later received funding under Free Library schemes, and was known as the Linton Free Library or the Linton Public Library. By the time the library closed in 1975, it was a government funded public library managed through the Grenville Shire Council. The photograph was taken after renovations of the building were undertaken in 1994. William Garnsworthy Bennett was at Linton's Diggings in 1856, when he married Susan Williams. Both had migrated from England. W. G. Bennett established a butcher's shop in Linton Township, and later purchased farming land and other town allotments. William and Susan Bennett had twelve children, eight of whom survived to adulthood. W. G. Bennett was a Trustee of the Linton Town Common, was elected to the Grenville Shire Council in 1871,and founded the Linton Rifle Club. After W. G. Bennett's death in 1903, the butcher's shop was run by the Todd family. Ambrose Murrell (c.1834-1891) migrated to Victoria in the early 1850s and owned a hotel or hotels at Happy Valley, before he and his wife Mary (nee May) bought the Victoria Hotel in Linton around 1881. Joseph Shepherd (1833-1921) migrated to Victoria with his wife Mary Tame in early 1851. They lived first at Geelong but were in Linton by 1862. Joseph Shepherd ran a grocery and general store, became a JP, and served on the Shire of Grenville Council. He was Shire President on three occasions. Irishman John McDonagh and his wife Martha, nee Mathews, arrived at Port Phillip on the ship 'Oliver Lang' in August 1855. They brought with them their first three children: Martha, Jane and Robert, and also two of John McDonagh's nieces: Jane and Isabella McDonagh, whose parents had died in Ireland. The McDonaghs had five more children in Australia. They lived at Linton from the mid-1860s. In the Ballarat Star [newspaper] in 1867, John McDonagh was described as a "sheep and cattle dealer". He was a member of the Woady Yaloak Roads Board, and later a member of the Council of the Shire of Grenville. John McDonagh died at Linton in 1871. An inquest into his sudden and unexpected death (copy in McDonagh file) concluded he died of apoplexy (= stroke).
