The Fred Rochow Railways Collection incorporates photos related to the operation of the Wodonga Railway Station including different types of trains and railways staff C. 1930 – 1990. It was donated to the Wodonga Historical Society by Fred Rochow, a railwayman who spent many years based in Wodonga. He joined the Victorian Railways on 17th June l947 and retired in 1988. For some time, he was a member of the Australian Federated Union of Locomotive Enginemen and served a term as a member of the Trades Hall Council. He had an extensive knowledge of the struggles that took place to achieve better conditions for railway workers. Fred worked for many years as a fireman and then worked his way up the ranks to driver, experiencing many changes from the days of steam locomotives through to diesel trains, locomotives and even the modern XPT train. He worked throughout Victoria at different stages of his career, with his final working years focused on the northeast of Victoria and the Albury to Melbourne line. After his retirement, Fred continued to share his love of steam miniature trains with the community.This collection has local and statewide significance as it captures images of trains, locomotives and personnel who operated the railway services in Wodonga and throughout Northeast Victoria. Claude Clancy was born on 27 March 1895 and started cleaning with Victorian Railways on 16 January 1920. He passed his Driver qualification on 30 December 1936. Alex Reid was born on 4 August 1891. He joined the Victorian Railways at Port Melbourne on 10 December 1907. Alex started cleaning at North Melbourne on 4 October 1910. Alex gained his Driver qualification on 18 December 1919. Jack O’Donnell was born on 3 May 1889 and began working with Victorian Railways on 1 June 1911. He started cleaning on 13 January 1912. He gained his Driver qualification on 19 November 1920. Vin Snow started his Victorian Railways career at Wodonga in September 1939. He passed his Driver qualifications in 1949. Cragg Sisters Father William Grundy Cragg 1862-1938 a Cabinet Maker made the Honour Roll. Brother Henry also cabinetmaker. Mother Annie Cragg (ne Wearmouth) 1863-1948 married 1895. Elizabeth (Bess or Bessie) Cragg 1896-1985 of Smith Street in 1920 prepared WW1 Honour roll for shire while she was a part time student and part time instructor at the then School of Mines. Music teacher Annie (Nan) Cragg 1897-1984 Of Smith Street Stawell. School teacher from 1915. Taught at Watta Wella. (Fat Miss Cragg). Owned a car. Marjorie Cragg1900-1982 Schoolteacher in Melbourne. Married Henry Bird Jessie Cragg 1901-1998 School Teacher from 1922 of Smith Street (Skinny Miss Cragg) looked after Cragg household. Agnes Cragg 1903-1930 Schoolteacher in Melbourne Married cousin Lancelot Wearmouth D’Arcy Street. A note on the reverse side indicates that the photo may have been taken on Boxing Day (..."ing Day Fern Tree Gully 1896" but the corner of the photo with the rest of the inscription is missing). The photo is significant as it was taken by George Rose of "The Rose Collection" fame. On Tuesday the 19th of March 2002, a small group of people of varying ages took part in assessing the level of difficulty of some walking paths at Jells Park in Wheeler's Hill. Their assessments would inform the development of a guide of graded walks as part of the Healthy Parks, Healthy People program. Guided by two Parks Victoria rangers, the group tried out a few walking paths consisting of varying levels of difficulty. Aterwards, they enjoyed a light lunch.
