(William Dickie) Birrell (1899-1974). Harrison was appointed to the position in 1901 and retired in 1938 after 37 years. Birrell, appointed Acting Town Clerk in 1921, became Town Clerk in 1938, following Harrison's retirement. He continued in this role until his retirement in 1966.This card is part of an historically significant civic collection, containing hundreds of separate invitations, documents, greeting cards, programmes and tickets issued and/or collected by successive town clerks. A cropped version of this photo appears on page 13 of the Vol 1 No 2, April 1984 issue of RAAV's quarterly newsletter, News Review. ..."Artie", which began as a cartoon character in the shape of a rat, eventually became the official mascot of the Rheumatism and Arthritis Association (RAAV). In this photo, the Friends of Artie auxiliary group are depicted at their monthly coffee shop, which was held at the Hawthorn Town Hall. A cropped version of this photo appears on page 13 of the Vol 1 No 2, April 1984 issue of RAAV's quarterly newsletter, News Review. It is captioned: "Friends of Artie, from left, Margaret Cleve, Eileen Erving, Kathy Payne, Phoebe Cum-mings, Dot Mortensen and Maureen Meyers, at their monthly coffee shop." Due to the photo having been cropped, 'The Rheumatism and Arthritis Association' sign on the wall isn't visible in the published photo. According to the article accompanying the photo, the monthly coffee shop catered to the craft market and raised about $100 a month for RAAV. The article also provides a brief history of the creation of Artie, which was initially a cartoon character created by Helen Semmler, daughter of Cliff Semmler, an executive member of RAAV. The character, a research rat, became so popular that it was eventually turned into a mascot, with a costume created for RAAV member, Dot Mortensen. Dot brought the character to life with appearances as Artie at many RAAV events.B&W photo of a small group of women sitting on one side of a long table. On the table, there are some plastic containers with lids and a small tray of sandwiches, some jugs of milk and sugar bowls, a couple of cups, and two books. On the wall behind them is a small sign with the handwritten words, 'The Rheumatism and Arthritis Association of Victoria'. To one side of the sign, there is a stained glass window and, below that, a radiator with a tea towel draped across the top.[In blue ink] Maureen Meyers Dot Mortensen Kathy Payne Phobe Cummings Eileen Erving Margaret Cleve [on a yellow sticky note, in black ink] folder AFV photos 1987 & not dated - file "friends of artie”rheumatism and arthritis association of victoria, raav, artie, research rat, cartoon, mascot, costume, friends of artie, auxiliary group, margaret cleve, eileen erving, kathy payne, phoebe cummings, dot mortensen, maureen meyers coffee shop, fundraising, hawthorn town hall, helen semmler, cliff semmler, executive member, news review, 1984 -

A large crowd is gathered as a photographer captures a Lady Mayoress at the driver's controls. ...One photograph shows a line of many decorated north-bound single truck tramcars with drivers at controls stopped behind a ceremonial ribbon as a woman reaches upward to cut it. Crowds of adults and children dressed in heavy coats and hats stand behind and in front of barriers. To the right in a lighter coloured overcoat is the chairman of the Prahran and Malvern Tramways Trust (PMTT), Mr Alexander Cameron. The Malvern Town Hall is shown at left with its clock showing 2.30pm on Friday 30 May 1913, the day before the federal election in which the Labor government was defeated by the Liberal Party by one seat. Federal Parliament sat in Melbourne until 1927. This ceremony officially opened the new double track electric line along Glenferrie Road from the Town Hall at High Street, Malvern to Cotham Road, Kew. Negotiations between the three municipalities had taken much effort to reach an agreement. At Cotham Road, the track branched west to the Kew Post Office at High Street and east to Burke Road. Services were then provided from both these termini to St Kilda Beach via Glenferrie Road, Hawthorn Road and Balaclava Road. Two further ceremonies occurred at Gardeners Creek and Barkers Road, the boundaries between three municipalities. A second photograph shows the same convoy of tram cars stationary for an additional event at Burwood Road adjacent to the Hawthorn Town Hall (out of shot to the left). A large crowd is gathered as a photographer captures a Lady Mayoress at the driver's controls. A third photograph shows a larger crowd at the corner of Glenferrie Road and Cotham Road, Kew in front of and hanging from an electric tramcar stationary on double track. The 400 guests in fine attire included state government ministers, spouses, local municipal mayors and councillors. Also present were the Prahran and Malvern Tramways Trust (PMTT) Board, including Chairman Alexander Cameron, at right in a lighter coloured overcoat. The well dressed woman out front may be Councillor Mrs Wood, the Mayoress of Hawthorn. ... Guests at the Hawthorn Town Hall....Guests at the Hawthorn Town Hall. The New Electric Tramway, Malvern to Kew Article ...One of a group of photographs, including three within a published photo collage , taken by Edgar James Dower in the second decade of the twentieth century. Born and raised in Olinda, Dower later moved to Surrey Hills. He worked as an adult as a clerk in the city office of the Metropolitan Gas Company, and in his role as a 'collector', he was able to photograph scenes including the construction of tramlines, railways and associated buildings in Kew, Hawthorn, Camberwell and Surrey Hills. Later he established a real estate agency with his brother - the E.J. Dower Real Estate Agency, Mount Dandenong Office. The photo collage is an historically significant record of the development of transport infrastructure which was used to connect Victorians in the first two decades of the twentieth century. This development resulted from increases in population and the consequent extension of Melbourne's suburbs. The photographs, both individually and collectively, richly detail the labour of workers and the tools and machinery used to create and extend Melbourne's public transport network in the years preceding and during World War 1.Photo collage, published in The Leader newspaper in 1913, to commemorate the opening of the Malvern to Kew Tramway. The numbered photos are: 1. Kew Railway Gates at Glenferrie. 2. Burke Road Terminus. 3. Final Stages. 4. Ladies at the Official Opening. 5. The Acting Mayoress of Kew Cutting the Ribbon at the Kew Boundary. 6. Mayor and Councillors at the Kew Terminus. 7. The Cutting the First Ribbon. 8. Kew Historical Society IncPhotograph - John Duncan Brownlee and friends, Yarra River, The Artorium, 1920s
... The photograph has additional artistic significance as it was produced at 'The Artorium', James Beament's design studio next to the Hawthorn Town Hall at 362 Burwood Road. With a home at 33 Uvadale Road (designed by Eric Nicholls, who managed the architectural practice of Walter Burley and Marion Mahony Grifffin from 1924 to 1932), Beament painted a number of significant murals for the Griffin practice, including those at the Capitol Theatre in Melbourne....The photograph has additional aesthetic significance as it was produced in James Beament's Hawthorn Studio - The Artorium - at 362 Burwood Road, next to the Hawthorn Town Hall. john brownlee (tenor) punting recreation - yarra river (kew) james beament the artorium -- 362 burwood road -- hawthorn (vic.) ...This mounted and framed photograph of a group of friends punting on the River Yarra has a number of historic and artistic associations. The photograph is primarily important as an informal photograph of the Australian baritone John Donald Mackenzie Brownlee (1900-1969), whose international career at the world's major opera houses from 1927 until his retirement in 1958 included singing at Melba's Covent Garden farewell in 1926, to recordings in the 1930s of a major series of Mozart operas in Glyndebourne Festival productions, conducted by Fritz Busch. Brownlee, born in Geelong, won the gold medal as champion vocalist at the South Street competitions in Ballarat in 1921. Moving to Paris in 1923 he began study with the French baritone, Dinh Gilly, making his operatic debut at the Trianon Lyrique in Montmartre in 1926. The most significant periods of his operatic career were with the Paris Opera from 1927 to 1936, and at the Metropolitan Opera from 1937 to 1957. After his move to Paris in 1923, he is recorded as revisiting Australia in 1928 as a member of the Melba-Williamson Company, and 24 years later in 1952. The photograph of Brownlee and the Gardners in a punt on the Yarra, while putatively dated to 1925, must be from earlier in the 1920s before his move to Paris, or later during the Melba-Williamson Company season. Before his move to Paris in 1923, Brownlee had lived in Belmont Avenue, Kew, where he must have developed a friendship with the Gardners. The photograph has additional artistic significance as it was produced at 'The Artorium', James Beament's design studio next to the Hawthorn Town Hall at 362 Burwood Road. With a home at 33 Uvadale Road (designed by Eric Nicholls, who managed the architectural practice of Walter Burley and Marion Mahony Grifffin from 1924 to 1932), Beament painted a number of significant murals for the Griffin practice, including those at the Capitol Theatre in Melbourne.A photograph of recreational activities on the River Yarra. The photograph is historically significant as a professionally produced photograph of the Australian operatic baritone John Brownlee, either before his move to Paris in 1923, or in 1928 during the Melba-Williamson Company operatic tour of Australia. The photograph has additional aesthetic significance as it was produced in James Beament's Hawthorn Studio - The Artorium - at 362 Burwood Road, next to the Hawthorn Town Hall.Framed photograph of John Duncan Brownlee, the Australian tenor, with Enid Gardner and friend in a punt on the Yarra River. Brownlee was born in Geelong but before his move to Paris in 1923, he lived for a period in Belmont Avenue, Kew. Three labels on reverse. 1. "John Duncan Brownlee, Operatic Star, originally of Geelong later resident of Kew at Belmont Av, on the pole. Also in the punt - Edith Gardner a friend. The Gardners lived on the east corner of Edgevale Rd. & Cotham. Approx. 1925." 2. "This picture is the property of Kew Historical Society 1/4/79". 3. Tel.
