Mr Herbert Keck began planting his orchard c. 1886 and by 1902 had 33 acres under orchard and nursery stock. His endeavour was seen as a model orchard producing abundant crops. The district of Strathfieldsaye was proclaimed in 1861 and named a Shire on the 17th September in 1866. It remained a shire until amalgamation in 1994 when it became part of the City of Greater Bendigo. The shire was located 8 km to the south- east of Bendigo and covered an area of 601 square kilometres and extended from the Calder Highway to the Coliban and Campaspe Rivers. The shire's administration centre was in Strathfieldsaye until 1972 when new offices were opened in Kennington.Framed black and white head and shoulder portrait of Councillor Keck with hand coloured and drawn detail. Herbert Keck was a big supporter of the boy scouts and girl guides, often allowing them to camp on his property. It is likely that this hut was built in Spring Gully on land provided by Mr Keck. This photo originally appeared in the "Bendigonian" 20th January 1914. Ada Keck was born in Sandhurst 24/7/1856 to William and Mary Reynolds (nee Williams). Both fronted the Main Road. Mrs Allen donated the block in front of the School, this offer was accepted. (e) Sketch plan in pencil and red ink showing a proposal of how the site would look with the Memorial on. (f) Two sections of paper pinned together, one in ink, one in pencil. The ink piece is name listed 1 - 65 and some names have notations written next to and is double sided. The notations are "Returned or Killed". The pencil listing has a list of 18 names with "Killed" next to. The other part has 45 names. On the rear of this one is some pencil notes, a sketch and re a meeting on "June 5th". .6) Newspaper cuttings x 2. one relates the site chosen for the Kangaroo Flat Soldiers Memorial being the block in front of the school and donated by Mrs Allen. The other relates to the Repatriation Commission and the costing of local Memorials. .7) War trophy documents & correspondence. (a & b) Dated 10th & 17th December 1918 re application for War trophies replied by the State Parliament House Melbourne. (c) Dated 24 the October 1919.
