First paragraph is about the Tyson's Reef, 1870. Opposite the Gasworks, it yielded large quantities of gold. Near the Tyson's is the Brownlee Reef. Macartney, in his book had this to say:- ''The Masonic Hall is by far the grandest building in Sandhurst (Bendigo), and a fitting and right noble home for such an Order to place their ark in. The building is one on the pure Corinthian order, lofty without, and spacious within; therein is the finest Assembly Hall out of Melbourne Town Hall. What an imposing façade, with its tapering columns rearing the graceful acanthus-leaf capitals 40 feet. . . . With the growth of Freemasonry in Bendigo, new Craft Lodges were established, as were lodges of higher degrees. Two copies of document : nineteen handwritten pages of notes on 'The Rich Victoria Hill and Its Historical Association' Signed by A Richardson and dated 30 - 8 - 1971. and a typed copy of same. Notes include: Introduction, Hotels, Mines, Mining History and descriptions of features where the signposts are. Mines mentioned in the text are: North Old Chum. Ballerstedt's first open cut, Lansell's Big 180. 20 head stamper, Lansell's Cleopatra Needle, Victoria Quartz Mine. Cleopatra's Needle was a square sectioned brick chimney with this four sided pyramidal chimney top with four vents to allow the smoke to escape whatever the direction of the wind. It was demolished in the 1950's as it had a bend in it and it was considered unsafe. Lansell had two other mines with similar chimneys, the '222' in Chum Street and his 'Sandhurst' or 'Needle' mine near the Bendigo, Eaglehawk boundary. Gives details of the tram history and signed by Mr. L. J. Denmead, Departmental Tramways Supt., Mr. F. K. White, Branch Manager and Mr. A. N. Smith, Engineer and Manager. Typed on copy paper with a faint watermark "EURNT BANR MADE IN AUST". Was attached on donation to item 1850, with a pin in top left hand corner. Separated for storage. See image file for arrangement on donation. Note: Later review by D. Macartney in early 80's? found that the SEC had miscalculated the distance travelled by 100,000 miles.
