Charles Robert Thatcher (1831-1878) trained in England as a flautist before travelling to the Bendigo goldfields in 1853. He was unsuited and unsuccessful as a miner so decided to rely on his music to make his fortune. He was considered a 'comic vocalist' who wrote many songs about the observations he made on the goldfields. These songs were often satirical and were published in newspapers as poems. He travelled extensively around the Victorian goldfields and also toured New Zealand. In 1861 he married widowed singer Anna Vitellie who performed with him, singing sentimental ballads. In 1870 the family returned to England where Charles became an importer of curios, following in his father's footsteps. He travelled to China, Japan and India sourcing stock for his business and on one such trip he contracted cholera and died in Shanghai. The Defence Department is opening Fortuna Villa to the public on Saturday as part of a community consultation process before its sale.This provides a rare opportunity for locals to visit one of Bendigo's most iconic properties, formerly home to mining magnate George Lansell. Federal Member for Bendigo, Steve Gibbons, encourages the community to visit and learn about the villa's history and potential future uses.The Villa Fortuna Action Group expects a large turnout and welcomes the opportunity, though they note the limited visiting time. Visitors can take a self-guided tour along a designated route to view significant elements of the villa. Art Nouveau began in the 1880s as a reaction to classical, academic art. Itfeatures organic, especially floral motifs, highly stylized forms, and flowing curves. Artists aimed to integrate art into everyday life, influencing everything from architecture to furniture. Most outstanding examples are found in Riga (Latvia) and Brussels (Belgium), with Brussels townhouses recognized as UNESCO World Heritage sites for their architectural brilliance and historical importance. Local Examples are the Former Royal Bank Building (View Point): Built in 1908, designed by Beebe and Garin, now a restaurant. It survived the 1893 financial crash and stands out for its Art Nouveau influences. Denderah (now Cooloch House): Purchased and redecorated in 1910 by George Victor Lansell, featuring distinctive windows, colored glass, carved woodwork, and plaster ceilings. 159 Forest and Verona Street (Verona): Built in 1909 for Lawrence J. Spring bound photographic record of the former Lyric Theatre, 19 High Street (Charing Cross), Bendigo, by Bruce Trethowan, B.arch, FRAIA, dated June, 2005. A letter in the front of the document mentions as part of the Bendigo Bank Development, it was necessary to demolish the former Lyric Theatre. Before doing so, the Bank commissioned a heritage architect to produce a photographic record of the building. It is addressed to Mr Jim Evans, President, Bendigo Historical Society and dated 10 August 2005. In 1853, Bendigo Miners protested against the 30 shilling miners licence the had to pay the government. They wore red ribbons to show their protest and shopkeepers hung red ribbons outside their premises in support. Thousands of miners signed a petition to Governor LaTrobe to no avail.
