Joseph Ringland Anderson was born in Killylea, Ulster, Ireland in March 1854. At the age of 18 he joined the Presbyterian Church at Killylea by profession of faith. He studied at Queen's College, Galway, and graduated M.A. He then studied Theology at the General Assembly's Theological Hall, Belfast. In 1881 he decided to emigrate to Australia, and completed his theological education at Ormond College, Melbourne. He was ordained in 1882 and inducted into the Presbyterian Church at Penshurst, Victoria. While at Penshurst he married Annie Love Elder. He was called to Lilydale in 1893, to Beechworth in 1902, to North Carlton in 1907 and 1913, was inducted into the Kew Presbyterian Church. Retired and demitted 1926. Joseph Anderson Panton lived through the entire reign of Queen Victoria and in over 60 years of being in Australia saw the country advance from the earliest gold-rush days through to the first decade of Federation. Arriving from Scotland intending to pursue a pastoral life in Victoria, the discovery of gold dramatically changed that direction for the 20 year-old student, fresh from a military Academy education.Not a bystander to the myriad of events of the era, he soon carved out a life of some significance in the administration of justice in the dramatic early days and maturing of Sandhurst (Bendigo), then advancing through by postings to country regional areas and finally become extremely well known as Melbourne's Police Magistrate for some 30 years until his retirement in 1907. joseph anderson panton, magistate, gold commissioner, eltham, north warrandyte, glynns reserve, police magistrate

This docket, from the firm of Dalgety and Company Limited of Terang, gives details of the sale of three rams on behalf of Joseph Tilley of ‘Aringa’. The total profit for Mr Tilley was £6-10-6. Joseph Tilley ran the property of ‘Aringa’ which was on the Portland Road, five miles from Port Fairy. He also owned the Penshurst Hotel at the same time. Dalgety and Company was established by Frederick Dalgety in Melbourne in 1846, primarily to support sheep farmers. In 1993 Dalgety Farmers became a subsidiary of the A.N.Z. Bank and the pastoral interests of the company were taken over by Wesfarmers.This docket is of some importance as it is an original one and gives details of a 1917 sale of a bull, with the names Wilson and Anderson and Tilley of some local interest. The Falls of Halladale was an iron-hulled, four-masted barque, used as a bulk carrier of general cargo. She left New York in August 1908 bound for Melbourne and Sydney. In her hold was general cargo consisting of roofing tiles, barb wire, stoves, oil, and benzene as well as many other manufactured items. After three months at sea and close to her destination, a navigational error caused the Falls of Halladale to be wrecked on a reef off the Peterborough headland on the 15th of November, 1908. The captain and 29 crew members survived, but her cargo was largely lost, despite two salvage attempts in 1908-09 and 1910. The Court of Marine Inquiry in Melbourne ruled that the foundering of the ship was entirely due to Captain David Wood Thomson's navigational error, not too technical failure of the Clyde-built ship. She was one of several designs of Falls Line of ships named after waterfalls in Scotland. During the period 1882-92 Russell & Co. standardised designs, which sped up their building process so much that they were able to build 271 ships during that time. The Falls of Halladale had a sturdy construction built to carry maximum cargo and able to maintain full sail in heavy gales, one of the last of the 'windjammers' that sailed the Trade Route. She and her sister ship, the Falls of Garry, were the first ships in the world to include fore and aft lifting bridges.
