Ballarat Tram 26 travelling around Lake Wendouree. This tram was built in 1916 for the Hawthorn Tramways Trust and numbered 5. It was renumbered 111 by MMTB in 1920. In 1930 it was sold to the Electric Supply Company and again renumbered to 23. Passed to the SEC in 1934. Samuel George KOHRY was born in London England, in August of 1833 and died aged 80 on the 13th July 1914. Arriving in Victoria in 1855 he first settled in Geelong and in 1859 was appointed to take charge of a public school at Hawthorn. In 1866 Mr Kohry with his wife and young children moved to Newport and took charge of the Newport school (Newport Lakes Primary). Ballarat Tram 19 was built in 1916 by Meadowbank Manufacturing Co in Sydney for the Prahran and Malvern Tramways Trust. It came to Ballarat in 1931 and then transferred to Bendigo in 1960. It was renumbered and became second car No 7. Bendigo had a No 19 car that was built in 1916 by Duncan and Fraser of Adelaide. It was originally built for Hawthorn Tramways Trust. It was transferred to Bendigo in 1932 and in 1935 renumbered 12 in the fleet. Photograph shows a tram No 19 near Lake Weeroona in Bendigo. John Gartner was a fine printer and publisher, an author, a noted philatelist, and also collector of Australian banknotes and coins. He was born on 16 July 1914 and was largely self-educated, leaving school at fourteen for work following the death of his father. Gartner developed a strong interest in the history of typography and printing and was apprenticed at the Advocate where his father had been a linotype operator. Aged 17, Gartner bought a hand press and some fonts of type, and in 1937 acquired a platen press from which he set and printed his private press books, published under the imprint of The Hawthorn Press. Gartner had a strong collection of Australian bookplates. He also looked at the work of artists overseas and commissioned personal plates. He subsequently built an international collection with preference for artists who printed from wood. Henry Christian (c.1809-91) was one of the first settlers in Kew. He arrived in Victoria with his wife Agnes and son Orlando in 1855 on the Gypsy Queen. He established a rope-making business in Bulleen Road by 1858 but was declared insolvent two years later. In his final years, he was celebrated as one of the oldest living settlers of the district. His son, Orlando Henry Beater Christian (c.1853-1930) became a member of the Hawthorn Band and a foundation member of the Willsmere Swimming Club. Orlando and his wife Elizabeth had four children: Henry Beater (1886-1962), Ada Susannah May (1888-1962), Orlando Julius (1891-1917) and Lilian Adelaide ( -1956). Ada was to marry into the Washfold family. An item from an outstanding and diverse photographic collection, assembled by members of the Christian and Washfold families of Kew, comprising professional and amateur photography, depicting individuals, natural and settled environments and the interactions between these worlds. Tram 33 was built by Duncan and Fraser in 1917 for the Hawthorn Tramways Trust. It was on-sold to the Footscray Tramways Trust. Due to the First World War shortages of electrical equipment, the tram could not be completed. Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board took over the Trust and completed the tram. It was purchased by the SEC in 1935 and became part of the Ballarat fleet. In 1971 the tram was acquired by the Hamilton Pastoral Museum and there until Ballarat Tramways Museum acquired it in 1977.
