A large story about women who worked for their country during World War II. Elizabeth Simpson Elizabeth had been a bush nurse and a nursing sister at the Alfred Hospital before she joined the army nursing corps in 1941. Her first posting was Heidelberg Hospital, with her second in the Middle East. Elizabeth tended wounded from the Battle of Alamein. At the end of the war Elizabeth spent three months in Singapore nursing Japanese POW's - men from Changi and women from Sumatra. After the war Elizabeth made a career of nursing. June Fox At the age of 17 in 1943 June signed up for the Victorian Land Army. She soon found herself at a mixed farm near Lakes Entrance. Henry Christian (c.1809-91) was one of the first settlers in Kew. He arrived in Victoria with his wife Agnes and son Orlando in 1855 on the Gypsy Queen. He established a rope-making business in Bulleen Road by 1858 but was declared insolvent two years later. In his final years, he was celebrated as one of the oldest living settlers of the district. His son, Orlando Henry Beater Christian (c.1853-1930) became a member of the Hawthorn Band and a foundation member of the Willsmere Swimming Club. Orlando and his wife Elizabeth had four children: Henry Beater (1886-1962), Ada Susannah May (1888-1962), Orlando Julius (1891-1917) and Lilian Adelaide ( -1956). Ada was to marry into the Washfold family. An item from an outstanding and diverse photographic collection, assembled by members of the Christian and Washfold families of Kew, comprising professional and amateur photography, depicting individuals, natural and settled environments and the interactions between these worlds. Belleek was established following the Irish famine of the mid nineteenth century that brought so many Australian families, including the Taffe and Berkery families to immigrate to the Australian colonies. This Belleek porcelain tea set and tray in the Thorn pattern based on the hawthorn bush sprig in flower carries the impressed registration mark for 1878. Belleek was well represented at the Melbourne International Exhibition of 1880-81 at Melbourne's Exhibition building and many examples were bought by key Ballarat Irish families including those connected to this family such as the Brophy, O'Malley and Fitzgerald families, Julia Taffe's (nee Berkery) aunts uncles and cousins. Many such examples remain in Ballarat collections although this is not one.Tea set consisting of a tray with teapot, creamer, sugar bowl two saucers and one remaining cup from the original pair. Ballarat Tram 26 travelling around Lake Wendouree. This tram was built in 1916 for the Hawthorn Tramways Trust and numbered 5. It was renumbered 111 by MMTB in 1920. In 1930 it was sold to the Electric Supply Company and again renumbered to 23. Passed to the SEC in 1934. John Gartner was a fine printer and publisher, an author, a noted philatelist, and also collector of Australian banknotes and coins. He was born on 16 July 1914 and was largely self-educated, leaving school at fourteen for work following the death of his father. Gartner developed a strong interest in the history of typography and printing and was apprenticed at the Advocate where his father had been a linotype operator. Aged 17, Gartner bought a hand press and some fonts of type, and in 1937 acquired a platen press from which he set and printed his private press books, published under the imprint of The Hawthorn Press. Gartner had a strong collection of Australian bookplates. He also looked at the work of artists overseas and commissioned personal plates. He subsequently built an international collection with preference for artists who printed from wood. Ballarat Tram 19 was built in 1916 by Meadowbank Manufacturing Co in Sydney for the Prahran and Malvern Tramways Trust. It came to Ballarat in 1931 and then transferred to Bendigo in 1960. It was renumbered and became second car No 7. Bendigo had a No 19 car that was built in 1916 by Duncan and Fraser of Adelaide. It was originally built for Hawthorn Tramways Trust. It was transferred to Bendigo in 1932 and in 1935 renumbered 12 in the fleet. Photograph shows a tram No 19 near Lake Weeroona in Bendigo.
