The Linton library opened in 1871 under the auspices of the Linton Mechanics' Institute. It was later funded by grants for Free Libraries, and operated as a lending library until the 1960s. It was known at different times as the Linton Public Library and the Linton Free Library. This photograph shows a somewhat dilapidated "Linton Free Library". The verandah shown in earlier photos of this building has been removed. The building next to it is the former Nelson family home and Nelson Bros. undertaker's office, which was restored in 1987 to become the LDHS Resource Centre.Colour photographs taken in 1988 showing front of a building with a square, pedimented parapet. It is understood that this receipt book came into the LDHS collection via PROV-Place of Deposit arrangements, but it is not clear when this happened. Two other Library receipt books were donated by Golden Plains Shire in 2017 as part of PROV-POD arrangements. The house lived in by Maisie Hart is thought to have been moved to the site in the 1950s after the house formerly on the site burned down. The Linton Library had closed in 1975, and the Nelson Undertakers' building had not yet been renovated to become the Linton & District Historical Society Resource Centre. The licensees of the Railway Hotel at the time were O. & E. Webley. The Linton library initially operated under the auspices of the Linton Mechanics' Institute, from around 1871. The photograph was taken after renovations of the building were undertaken in 1994.
