In 2017 parts of the building are still on the site, although in a very dilapidated condition.Photograph copied from original of a petrol station/mechanic's workshop. At the time the photograph was taken the workshop was owned by John and Alice (Jill) Dumbrell. The date the photograph was taken is unknown. Stella Surman...Bill Hall...Georgina Hall...Joseph Shepherd...79 Sussex Street Linton...Linton: house dates from 1860s, and was owned from 1883 by Joseph Shepherd, and then from c.1930 by the Bennett family who used it briefly as their butcher's shop; later was it a cake shop run by Stella Ralf (Stella Ralf also taught piano). Later (1978-1981) run as op-shop by Mrs. Stella Surman to raise money for Maxwell Park C.E.B.S. camp. House had a later incarnation as a laundromat in 1980s - at this time many women were still without electricity on outlying farms and house blocks. ... Linton Newsagency. It is not clear whether she managed the newsagency, as it was run by her son William (Bill) Murrell from about 1912, and later by his daughter Carrie Murrell. Mary Murrell died in 1928, age 94. Mary Murrell née May Enlarged black and white copy of original photograph which has been mounted on white card. The photograph shows an older lady wearing a full-length skirt and a knitted jumper and holding a bundle of sticks (?) with both hands. She has been photographed outside, near a shed or garage ...Mary May was born in Bedfordshire, England in 1839 and migrated to Victoria with her parents, brothers and sisters in 1852. She married Ambrose Murrell in 1855, and they had seven children. Mary and Ambrose Murrell bought the Victoria Hotel in Linton in 1881. After Ambrose died in 1891, Mary continued to run the hotel with the assistance of her daughter Caroline, but it is understood that around the time Caroline married in 1910, Mary sold the hotel and bought the Linton Newsagency. Fairbanks and Harrison operated a garage in Sussex St opposite Bryant's shop. ...Picture in photograph album donated by Mrs Faull. The plane landed at Linton Park as part of an advertising campaign by Astor Radios in 1928. Information provided by Ron Preston of Linton: "The day the plane landed in Linton Park / late 20s. Fairbanks and Harrison operated a garage in Sussex St opposite Bryant's shop. Fairbanks was married to Carrie Murrell's sister Dorrie and William (Bill) Harrison was married to Dulcie Nicol. Among other things that the garage sold were ASTOR RADIOS. To promote ASTOR RADIO a Gypsy Moth double seater aircraft flew low over towns to advertise. ASTOR RADIO was written under both wings. by Boltes) staying overnight. Both Harrison & Fairbanks were taken up for a ride. The pilot "dive-bombed" the local children, many of them seeking shelter under the bridge, as they were frightened, not having seen a plane up close before."
