From the late 1870s to the 1930s, illuminated addresses were a popular way to commemorate special occasions and were given to recognize outstanding service. They featured beautiful calligraphy and ornate designs. Arthur Grace was a draper who ran a business in Linton (at 'Criterion House') from the mid-1860s until he left Linton to return to England in 1873. He later returned to live in Ballarat, where he died in 1905. He was heavily involved with the Methodist/Wesleyan congregation at Linton, and instrumental in establishing the Linton Mechanics' Institute and Free Library. (Note: The 'Adress' does not refer to the Linton Mechanics' Institute, but to the 'Committee of the Public Library at Linton'.) The Address was made by Francis Wilson Niven, a lithographer, printer and bookbinder from Ballarat.
