Amalgamation was a major push of the Hawke - Keating Government. .14 - March 1992 - supportive of Jim Harper, dismissive of Lou DiGregorio, Union executive, union amalgamation, cross linking of tram routes, racial discrimination within the PTC, Kew Depot, ACTU. Lists the rank and file committee - see key associations. Latham’s frustrations were shared by several would-be heroes in Victoria. In 1977 Paul Krutulis gained an exemption from union membership from the Arbitration Commission as a conscientious objector, only to find that tramway workers at Kew planned to stop work as soon as he appeared. Commissioner Cohen then recommended his dismissal, saying she “had to deal with the reality of the situation.” Krutulis later became president of a group called People Against Communism, before being murdered in September. Thus Krutulis departed the scene to be followed in early 1978 by motor mechanic Jack Kane, who had crossed a picket line at a Melbourne City Council depot. The AMWU forced the Council to sack him before it would end the strike. In September of the same year, Barbara Biggs succeeded in provoking a confrontation in the tramways where Krutulis had failed, by refusing to join the union and prompting 100 unionists at Brunswick depot to go on strike. The union executive had arranged token action confined to this depot, but the members wanted more. The strike spread to Preston, then 2,000 trammies at a mass meeting voted for an indefinite strike amidst “rowdy outbursts”. When Biggs complained at being excluded from the meeting a conductress told her, “We should have let you in, love. Some proposals involved replacing the Sydney Road trams with light rail, freeing up the rail reservation for a freeway, while others proposed installing the light rail on the rail reservation from Upfield to Park Street, where the line would divert to join the Royal Parade tram line. / Our collection includes documents on the community campaign to save the line from the Cain Government in 1989-90 and the Kennett Government in 1992-93. The Save the Upfield Line Campaign was set up and composed of local residents. We have a collection of their minutes and campaign materials. Brunswick Council was also actively involved in campaigning to save the line and set a Council and community committee to work on this. We also have minutes of its meetings and some Council reports on the issue. / In 1995 the State Government finally agreed to retain and upgrade the line. Added to VC EJ July 2025

Annie Aurelia Jones was born on 22 November 1903 at Buninyong. She was appointed to the staff of the Ballarat School of Mines in 1921 as a Typist and retrenched on 31 December 1922. She was reappointed to the staff on 25 May 1923 as a junior clerk. She retired from the Ballarat School of Mines on 18 July 1962. Annie Jones died on 05 January 1984 at Melbourne, and is buried in Buninyong Cemetery. . Ruby Helen Lonie was born on 09 July 1895 at Ballarat, the daughter of Hugh Lonie of Rothesay, Scotland and Jan McLean from Ballarat. Ruby Lonie was employed on the administrative staff of the Ballarat School of Mines from 1914 to May 1960. She died on 23 December 1979 at Ballarat. The Ballarat School of Mines Annual Report 1935 reported: " I also desire to make special reference to the splendid work performed by Miss R.H. Lonie and Miss A.A. Jones in carrying on the work of the Office during the late Mr Robinson's illness and since his death. The highest praise is due to them for the excellent services they have rendered and I feel very strongly that every effort should be made to obtain a grant from the Department in recognition of the additional services they were called upon to perform."Four typed quarto pages relating to the salary of Miss Ruby Lonie and Miss Annie A.
