A dispensation is a formal document that grants permission to establish and operate a local 'lodge' within the organisation. In this case is associated with Manchester Unity Friendly Society, a major branch of the Odd Fellows. The Independent Order of Odd Fellows is a non-political, non-sectarian fraternal organisation founded in Baltimore,Maryland, USA in 1819 dedicated to helping those in need. The framed dispensation was meant for permanent display within meetings halls. Mr William French was a Cornishman who arrived from Cornwall to the colonies in 1849. He was the owner and licencee of the Manchester Arms Hotel, in Long Gully. Record indicate the first Lodge NO. 4774 Odd Fellows meeting was held in this establishment.The highly decorated document announces the dispensation from Manchester Unity for the Independant Order of Oddfellows Loyal Albert Lodge no.4774 to be held at the house of Brother William French in Bendigo giving him to right to appoint officers for executing the business of the lodge. The dispensation is dated to 1859. The illustrated symbols of the order are seen at the top of the document followed by the dispensation. At the bottom of the document are the signatures and the wax seals of the witnesses. They are as follows: J.Alexander G.M, J.G. Hornblower G.M, W. Hickton A.G.M, H. Ratcliffe C.S, B. Lee D.G.M, H.H. Drowley C.S, J.T. Rance Pro GM, S.Hobson D.G.M, J.W.Wood Pro C.S. Every enlisted in July 1915, and sailed for Egypt in January 1916, and his imminent return home wounded. Private S. H. R. Elliott No. 782, K.I.A. April 25 1915, aged 28 years. Son of the late Mr. & Mrs George Elliott of Peg leg Road Eaglehawk, enlisted in August 1914 and embarked from Melbourne. N. S. Draper enlisted at the same time. Sydney Elliott was a member of the Eaglehawk Fire Brigade, Rifle club and was chosen to do sniping duty. G. Each coloured degree related to a particular value of the Manchester United Oddfellows. Purple certificate was related to charity. The Bendigo chapter of the Manchester United Oddfellows began in 1854.Blu folder. On one side the coloured logo of the Independet Order of Oddfellows in Victoria, Bendigo District, Manchester Unity Friendly Society. On the other the inscription: Purple Degree Certificate - We hereby certifythat brother R. G. Evans a member of the loyal Albert lodge, presented to us a certificate from his lodge entatling him to receive the Purple Dergee, which was duly conferred upon him at a Past Grand's Lodge, held at the M. U. Hall, Bendigo on the 20th day of January 1940. In witness whereof we have affixed our names and the Seal of our district this 25th day of January 1941. Signed bt the District Grand Master: L. It has a sketch of a Primitive Quart Crusher. Page 37 Mentions Richard Pope, a Miner who tramped from job to job in Bendigo and eventually followed the rush to Broken Hill. Page 38 mentions the Eaglehawk Brass Band and Friendly Societies in Eaglehawk. Page 39 is headed Miner's Cottage. It mentions stone miners' cottages. Page 40 has a sketch of a Georgian Style Sandstone Cottage Harvey Town. Page 41 mentions men sweeping the road to get gold, Bull Family grocery shop and a blacksmith. This business was owned by father and son, Henry Archibald Wilkinson and Samuel Ronald "Ron" Wilkinson. Henry (1882-1954) was born in Shepparton and died in Bendigo. He was married to Grace Hovendon in 1908. Henry Ison (1832-1915) was a butcher and cattle agent who lived mainly in the Dunnolly - Tarnagulla area. He married Elizabeth Carter in 1853 and they had 7 children of which 3 reached adulthood. These included their son Thomas (1863-1947). Henry was one of the founding members of the Loyal Prince Alfred Lodge of Oddfellows, a member of the Dunolly Borough Council for 9 years and one of the first trustees of the Dunnolly Racecourse.8524 Three receipts for purchases in early 1900. 8524a Mr. H Ison bought 6 bullocks on 4/10/1904 from Howe & McCulloch. 8524b Mr. T Ison bought 4 pigs, 2 & 13 lambs from Alf. E. Wallis & Co. on 26/07/190?. 8524c Mr Thos. Ison bought a Thurmer piano for 46 pounds on 23/02/1909 from Flights, Mitchell Street, Bendigo.livestock and a piano, purchases in early 1900
