Wallace Stree, Maidstone has a long history of dairies being located in the street. ...This photograph, taken by The Advocate in 1989 is of Graeme Richards, of Richards Dairys located in Wallace Street, Maidstone. Wallace Stree, Maidstone has a long history of dairies being located in the street. Richards Dairys has a long association with Sunshine & District with a number of dairies operating in Sunshine and Maidstone.Richards Dairies is significant for its contribution to the social and economic fabric of Maidstone and Sunshine. As a local supplier, it provided essential services to families during a period when home‑delivered milk was central to domestic routines. The dairy supported employment in the area, including delivery drivers, processing staff, and administrative workers. Its presence reflects the era of small suburban dairies that shaped community identity, local commerce, and neighbourhood interaction. The decline and eventual disappearance of Richards Dairies illustrate broader changes in food distribution, industrial consolidation, and suburban development in Melbourne’s west.7498.01 - Richards Dairy Maidstone 1989 Photographs (Advocate 963).JPG Graeme Richards 7498.02 - Richards Dairy Maidstone 1989 Photographs (Advocate 963).JPG Graeme Richards 7498.03 - Richards Dairy Maidstone 1989 Photographs (Advocate 963).JPG Graeme Richards & Family 7498.04 - Richards Dairy Maidstone 1989 Photographs (Advocate 963).JPG Dave Stephens 7498.05 - Richards Dairy Maidstone 1989 Photographs (Advocate 963).JPG 7498.06 - Richards Dairy Maidstone 1989 Photographs (Advocate 963).JPG Dave Stephensrichards dairies, wallace street, maidstone -

Heritage discussions note that the station moved around the corner into Short Street in 1956. It is possible the Ballarat Road building was extended at the rear, facing Short Street, and the operational entrance shifted. The station served Maidstone and Braybrook during the peak years of public housing expansion. Both the Ballarat Road and Short Street police station buildings are now private residencesLocals recall it as the place where many residents obtained their driver’s licences in the 1960s–1970s.5358.01 - Maidstone Police Station Ballarat Road Cnr Short Street 1956 Photo 01.jpg 5358.02 - Maidstone Police Station Ballarat Road Cnr Short Street 1956 Photo 01.jpgmaidstone police station, ballarat road, maidstone -

Early Foundations (1840s–1860s- The broader district saw activity from the 1840s, including Joseph Raleigh’s meat‑preserving works on the Maribyrnong River, which sat on the boundary of what became Maidstone. - Land speculator J.W. Thompson launched the township with great fanfare, including a German band and a banner proclaiming “Every man his own landlord.” - Despite the marketing, by 1860 only about ten homes existed. - - Maidstone grew slowly because it was isolated from the railway, relying instead on punts across the Maribyrnong River. - A National School opened in 1858, but the area remained sparsely settled. - The district’s early industrial landscape included: - Raleigh’s meat works (1843) - Victorian Powder Magazine, later expanded for military use These sites later became part of Pipemakers Park and the Living Museum of the West. - The arrival of trams from Footscray in 1921 finally unlocked residential growth. - A Progress Association formed, and the suburb gained amenities including its own cinema in the 1940s. - Housing stock from this era included weatherboard, Art Deco, and Californian Bungalow homes.
