Weekly Sunshine Times Malvern Advertiser Malvern and Armadale ...This file contains four items: 1/Two typed lists of the names and years of circulation of Elsternwick and Caulfield Newspapers held at the Caulfield Library, the first with amendments in ballpoint pen and the second a revised version of the first dated 12/07/1988. Also included in the item is a typed list of what appears to be issues of the Southern Cross newspaper held at the library and an original handwritten list with a black and white photocopy of newspapers held at the Caulfield Library, dated 11/09/1988. These were provided by Gladys Vallati (longtime member; Head Librarian of Caulfield Library for many years). 2/Two extracts from the Caulfield Historical Society Newsletters (issues April 1975 No 15 and June 1975 No 16) detailing newspapers published and or circulated in Caulfield that are held at the State Library of Victoria, both undated and author unknown. The first has some handwritten annotations and a minute from the first meeting of the Caulfield Road Board on 25/11/1857 on the reverse side, listing the surnames of those present. Also included in the item is a typed draft for one of the extracts. 3/A six page handwritten list of newspapers circulated in the area of Caulfield held in Australian libraries, taken from a Union List dated 1967 in the Canberra National Library, author unknown. Details given of the newspapers include the title and dates of issue, in some cases also listing the merging of newspapers and ceasing of publication. The brochure advertises seasonal rates on telegrams to ''all parts of the British empire and the United States of America''.The telegram is evidence that Lillie Duncan had personal contact with the seafarers she met through the Ladies Harbour Lights Gild. From the Adelaide Advertiser for 19 November 1952, p. 11: Two Happy Visitorsf rom the Pacific Adelaide is proving 'just like our real home'' to two charming and interesting visitors from Methodist missions in the Pacific. Miss Ravesi Mosi. of Fiii. and diminutive Miss Katalini Dimula, of Papua, the first native women missionaries to visit Australia From these islands. Ravesi and Katalini have enjoyed vastly the three months they have already spent in this country. Thev came here at the' invitation of the Methodist Women's Auxiliary for Oversea Missions in Victoria to take part in their diamond jubilee celebrations in Melbourne. They also spent some time in Sydney. But they are particularly happy to be in Adelaide because both of them have found old and good friends here. That is why it feels! like 'home'. Katalini. whose home is on the Island of Misima, in the far south-west of Papua, is the guest of the Rev. H. K. Bartlett and Mrs Bartlett. who lived on Misima for several years and knew Katoitni as a young girl. They are the first people she has met in Australia who speak her language and know her background. It was a personal interest to them to hear of her work as a missionary nurse, for which she did her training in Salamo Hospital on Ferguson Island, about 200 miles away from Misima, where she now helps to train the women of the island villages in the principles of health and hygiene and caring for their babies according to modern methods.Katalini is dressed in a grass skirt and a western top."Katalini Dimula" "D. SISTER Gwen, of the Methodist Home Missions Department, visited Tallygaroopna West last Wednesday, and gave a most interesting illustrated talk. As well as showing some of the scenic beauties of Gippsland, the talk and lantern slides dealt with slum conditions in South Melbourne, and showed the Methodist home at Cheltenham. Sister Gwen is a sister of Rev. E. Lechte, a former minister in the Shepparton circuit. A photo of the front exterior of the Rheumatism and Arthritis Association of Victoria Opportunity Shop, situated at 1428 High St, Malvern. There is an article on page 2 of the Vol 13, June 1979 edition of RAAV's News Review titled, "R.A.A.V. to open our own opportunity shop". Written by Vice President, Elva Renfrew, members and friends of RAAV are invited to donate goods and join a roster of volunteers who will staff the op shop once it opens. A second article appears on page 3 of the following issue of News Review, Vol 15, December 1979. Titled, "HERE'S OUR SHOP", it dates the opening of the Malvern Op Shop as being Monday, the 8th of October, 1979. A similar photo to this one accompanies that article, with a Christmas tree visible in the front display window of the shop. The article states that the opening of the shop was "launched by the Lady Mayor of Malvern, Counsellor [sic] Morrow, who presented us with a cheque." The newsagency on one side of the opportunity shop displays advertisements for 'The Sun' and 'The Age' newspapers. Two bill posters inside wire cages advertise the latest newspaper headlines. One contains the headline, "THE LIFE OF BILLY HUGHES". This headline most likely refers to the 2nd volume of a biography on the life of Australia's 7th Prime Minister, William Morris Hughes, by L. F. Fitzhardinge (1908-1993), which was published in 1979.COL photo of the exterior of a shop, with two other shops (partially obscured) evident on either side. On the outside of the veranda, the RAAV logo and "OPPORTUNITY SHOP" are painted in blue onto a white background. Above the shop's display window and double doors (beneath the veranda), the text "RHEUMATISM & ARTHRITIS ASSOCIATION OF VICTORIA" is painted in blue on a white background. On the window glass, the words "OPPORTUNITY SHOP" are painted in blue, in a tapered design. The double front doors are also painted in the same blue, and on one door, the text "RHEUMATISM AND ARTHRITIS ASSOCIATION OF VICTORIA", "ACTION HOUSE YARRA BOULEVARD KEW 3101 Phone 862 2555" are painted in white. Below this, the numbers "1428" (the street number of the building) is also painted in white. Behind the window, various items are on display. Inside the window, near the doors, a handwritten paper sign has been affixed which says, "OPENING MONDAY 10:30". To the left of the shop, there is a newsagency (partially obscured). Above the window, and beneath the verandah, there is the text (partially obscured), "...e Sun" with a picture of a rooster between the two words. At the top of the window, there is a sign containing the text, "THE AGE". Two bill posters inside wire cages are affixed to the wall. One says, "The AGE", "LIBS DEFY FRASER".
