Princes Court was an amusement park in Melbourne, located on St Kilda Road. Established in 1904, it closed its doors in 1909 after poor ticket sales due to Melbourne's temperamental weather. The park featured a toboggan ride and water chute ride where patrons inside open carriages were plunged down sloping structures from a height at great speeds. The park's other facilities and activities included a rifle range, a tug of war game, a Japanese tea house, a wine bar, a variety show, an open air cinema, and roller skating and bicycle races. This item contributes to our understanding of social life and recreation in early twentieth century Victoria. In the years of Allan Doney’s photography, landmark buildings succumbed to fire, neglect and redevelopment. He photographed the grey sand hills from Bendigo’s mining past, the streetscapes, poppet heads, miners’ cottages, gracious homes with ornate verandahs, trams and much more. Above all, his photographs show how much of the city has survived from the 19th century – and how much has not. Through two decades of great change, Allan Doney was there to capture ways people interacted with it. Although he travelled to many other places in Northern Victoria and beyond in search of subjects for his art, he seemed to always return to Bendigo for inspiration.

Monochrome postcard titled lower right: “RIVER YARRA AT STUDLEY PARK, MELBOURNE”. The postcard was produced by ROBERT JOLLEY, MELB, (active 1900-1904). On the reverse, there is a handwritten address in black ink to: MISS L STEPHENS / 26 WEST TERRACE / ADELAIDE. There is no division on the reverse of the postcard, dating it to before 1905. It lacks a postage stamp and postmark. Monochrome postcard of the River Yarra in Studley Park. The view is of the Yarra and its banks, with Kew on the left and Abbotsford on the right, as it appeared in the years 1900-1904.
